Offshore sailing is a magical time and offers an opportunity to unwind, reflect and enjoy the incredible experience of bobbing on a relatively very tiny piece of fiberglass on the huge magnificent ocean. We are rarely disappointed by mother nature! If its not the sea surprising us, a glimpse up at the night sky usually does the trick. But often we hear from viewers that they love the idea of sailing but are not at all enamoured in passage making. Well we thought we would spell off some of the mystery. Most of the time passage making in these latitudes is awesome downwind sailing! In this episode we introduce you to some of the basics that go into making an offshore sailing. This particular passage we were rewarded by a crazy rare sighting from the monsters of the sea! But really we wanted to give you an introduction into some of the small details that go into everyday life when you are bobbing along on the ocean. "Before the snow flies," is a busy time around a farm, and this year it involves improvements to the shed, fixing Akiva's platform, and doing a few other labor-intensive tasks for which we had a passionate group of volunteers to help with. Thunderstorm Laundry, Strolling New Plymouth, SWIMMING NAKED, and Anchoring at NIGHT in a LIGHTNING STORM!! It's a full episode this week as we learn when NOT to hang out our laundry to dry - right before a thunderstorm with 30 knot winds! ;-) Not much was lost so we made our way in to explore New Plymouth on Green Turtle Cay in the Abacos, Bahamas. This was the start of our journey back toward the US, so we did some provisioning and started making our way. It was tough keeping cool, so we did some dipping the only way cruisers can - skinny. Buttoning up the forward bulkhead with coats of sealer and varnish makes way for some interior joinery in the forepeak that Steve has plenty of experience producing. Tools that have long sat dormant in the shop are whizzed back into life to create square mortise and tenon joints. We were hoping that, for the most part, Victoria's interior would fit well into analog places in Arabella, but of course, with the differences in the sizes of the hulls, there were bound to be places where we'd have to put together some amalgamations of new and old material to make it all happen. Here's an instance where more oak comes into play with reclaimed mahogany. More mockups, more testing, more experimenting, more thinking about the future. While Alix continues with fairing around the house top opening, Steve works on getting more short beams and knees installed in the stern. As we've been finishing the rest of the planking on the port side, we have had groups of helpers lend a hand to clean up Arabella's interior. Most recently, David and his son, Grant, card-scraped the interior and applied Danish Teak Sealer to planks and frames. Boy, what a difference this made. In a boat shop, there is always some level of settling dirt and dust or inevitable dings and marks inside the hull, and since we're about to start building out the interior, we have our best opportunity and access to seal the planking and to clean what will be hard-to-reach surfaces. It is remarkable to see the glow of the wood emerge with the application of the sealer. We were blown away by the results—and the beauty that has come from the hard work of crew and volunteers. We are thankful and excited. Now, to keep chugging on the planking! We are nearly there. Almost done on the port side, and as Ben says in the narration, the last three planks on the starboard side will stay off for quite a while as the staging will be crucial for the next steps—building the cabin house, fitting out the interior, and planking the deck. Vlog #7! Here is episode 7 of Wicked Salty! In this episode we experience the most engine problems yet and had to take some emergency procedures/stops as it was overheating. In hindsight the rolling furler should have been ready to get unfurled, even having the main sail ready to go but dropping the anchor was the next best thing.
