Quite a bit of stuff broke on our Atlantic Crossing: a reefing line, the toilet raw water pump, our whisker pole… luckily none of these things were super imperative, but when our Autopilot stopped working, that was serious. Although we were able to jerry-rig the autopilot to finish the crossing and get us safely to the Azores archipelago, now it’s time for us to make sure this issue never happens again. Our first sail, we hit 5.2 knots of boat speed in 5 knots of wind!! Well, we don't want to spoil too much for you, but as you can tell by the title of this episode, we are smitten. And although we were not sailing in perfect conditions, or the sails were not always properly trimmed (this was literally their first time up) we still managed at one point to go faster than wind speed. And that is exactly what we were hoping for!! Part 8 of a series: Sailing Miami to Key West. We anchor our trailer sail boat in very shallow water on the beach of Pace Picnic Island in Miami. I rename it "Party Island". We walk the beach and take in the view. After the party people leave, we have the island all to our self. The bright lights of Miami are beautiful at night. It would not have been the same without you. This episode was filmed in 09 / 2020. — Hey, my name is Nike and I bought an aluminum 37 foot sailboat in Panama in 2013 that I named KARL. I spent a good year refitting it, mostly by myself and with the help of awesome friends, and then (mostly) solo sailed my sailboat around the western Caribbean. In 2016, I crossed the Panama Canal, had a major engine break down, a near sinking experience and a serious foot injury which got me stuck along the Pacific coast of Central and South America. In this Episode, we paint the hull of my Reinke Super 10 with a layer of epoxy primer and two layers of copper free Antifouling. The current covid19 situation makes it tricky to go into a marina, so I take advantage of my twin keels and a strong moon tide to let my boat dry fall to get the paint job done. After scraping and grinding the hull, I clean the bare aluminum spots and treat them with a slim layer of etch primer followed by a couple of layers of epoxy primer. Once this is done, Maria and Paul give me a hand to slap on the Total Boat epoxy primer and the Total Boat copper free antifouling. We just finish in time before the tide comes back in. Next up is cleaning my annodes and propellor and once I am done with that, Paul and I paint a second layer of antifouling Karl’s bottom is looking great and it was a challenging but rewarding project to work with extremely short drying times between tides and rain showers. I am happy it all worked out but I surely don’t recommend this procedure. And just to be clear, this procedure is surely NOT recommended by Total Boat, so don’t try this at home!!! Part two of turning Great-Grandpa's front yard tree into Arabella's wooden main mast reveals our plan for putting electrical items up at the top of the mast—we glued blue electrical conduit right up the middle to make it easy to chase wires. We re-assemble this disassembled tree into a final glue-up stronger than the tree would have been with its heartwood, sapwood, and other imperfections removed. Lots of glue, lots of progress. When the 111ft superyacht ‘Raven’ emerged from her builders Baltic Yachts in Finland, she turned plenty of heads. Built in secret and with giant foiling arms on either side, there was no shortage of comment as to whether this concept would work. Now, with footage of her first trials we have the answer. And with 100ft in mind, racing solo around the world on an Ultim trimaran is beyond comprehension for most of us.
