This round we dive into some plank repair on the hull and fix the cedar that exploded on us. Talk briefly about a new plank fastener we are using in preparation for installing what Atkin calls the bilge ceiling. We steam in the cedar plank after repair so it hopefully won't erupt into splinters upon fastening. There is also a bad dream, some soul searching, one of the most difficult decisions so far, a wee bit of science and math as well as some good old fashioned destruction testing. As we continue working on Arabella, we look ahead at starting to figure out the power plant. We got a beautiful new engine from Nanni Diesel last year and now we are back with Brook Streit from Kraft Power to talk about some of the intricacies of getting that diesel engine fit perfectly to our needs. Now is the time to start thinking about all these things as it will help to have them in mind as we build out the interior. We have an opportunity to work everything into one cohesive idea, as opposed to fitting the engine to a predetermined space. So, we talked about hookups, water intake, through hulls, batteries, etc. This laid the groundwork for us to talk further and come up with a plan down the road for a complete instal Yep! We'll likely see them in the future to help hook it all up, which we are very much looking forward to. We also would like to let everyone know about a couple of things. First of all, we are giving Ben a very much deserved break from video editing next week. He's been doing a fantastic job for the last year, cranking out great videos week after week and we'd like to give him the same opportunity as us to take a much deserved breather. This means there will be no video next week (November 20th, 2020). Speaking of vacations, Steve just headed out to the desert to go climbing with a friend and get a much needed break from the work here at Acorn to Arabella. He'll be back shortly and in the meantime, Alix will be working on getting Victoria's knees installed as well as fitting lodging knees and short beams. Fulaga, How beautiful you are! Visiting Fulaga (Fulanga) was one of those bucket list places for us. One of those places you have heard about, but almost cant fathom going to yourself. Well we made it. It wasn’t easy beating straight upwind from basically everywhere else in Fiji. It was more than worth it. If you ever have the chance, just GO. Fulaga is an island with a proper pass and a proper lagoon and proper crystal clear blue water and proper mushroom islets dotted everywhere. Fulaga is paradise. We have travelled half way around the world and Fulaga is a unique and beautiful spot. It is one of our favourites. It has no internet, no airport and the cargo ship only visits once a month or so, transporting people and provisions. You could hitch a ride on it but better yet, buy, borrow, steal or rent a yacht and get there yourself. There is a strict adoption policy for yachties. They have an system with about 60-80 boats a year stopping in. We arrived early in the season and were one of the first few boats of the season. Every family in the village adopts a yacht at least once or usually twice a year. Tui, Koro, John and their extended family got stuck with us. And Bill, the chiefs grandson, came along for all our adventures. This was by far the most unique village experience we have had to date. We hit up the kids culture week at school, we hiked with cannibals or perhaps rather the descendants of cannibals. (we are still here to tell the tale). We attended church and had beautiful Sunday lunch. We hosted a pizza feast and were serenaded by the beautiful voices from the most beautiful people as we said our farewells. In this episode we (Ben, my mom and I) take you with us as we meet the beautiful people of Fulanga and tour their beautiful island. But we are not yet done with Fulanga. In Kroatien haben sie zuvor ihr Segelboot gekauft, eine 46 Fuß Bavaria Vision, die Insieme. Wir hatten eines schönen Morgens eine Mail von den beiden im Postfach, mit der Frage, ob wir sie und ihre Yacht auf ihre Segelreise vorbereiten können. Sie möchten mit ihrem eigenen Segelboot Segeln lernen. Das haben wir uns natürlich nicht 3 mal überlegen müssen. Geplant war also ein Skippertraining mit Segeln in Kroatien, Hafenmanövern und allgemein vertraut werden mit dem Handling des Schiffs. Über den Winter hatten sie der Werft in Dubrovnik einige Aufträge erteilt, wie die Anbringung eines Geräteträgers, Windgenerator, Solarplatten, Batteriemonitor und auch der Einbau neuer Batterien. ALLERDINGS haben die Arbeiter ziemlich Gepfuscht und so gut wie nichts richtig gemacht... Wie wir an Bord festgestellt haben. Also haben wir die Woche Segeltraining aufgeteilt und die ersten Tage am Segelboot gebastelt, die Elektrik aufgeräumt, Werkzeuge und Ersatzteile besorgt und ein paar andere wichtige Sachen erledigt. Die Kamera war natürlich mit dabei und wir haben alles gefilmt. Zu Beginn dieser Folge BootsProfis erfahren wir, was die beiden eigentlich antreibt, die Zelte abzubrechen, auszusteigen und auf große Blauwassersegel Tour zu starten. Julia findet ein paar sehr inspirierende Worte: "Ich könnte HEUTE ein Buch schreiben, wie mein Leben ablaufen wird und Pi mal Daumen wird es auch darauf hinauslaufen... Das wollte ich einfach nicht. [...] Hey, lass mich mal frei sein, locker werden und einfach darüber nachdenken, wie wir eigentlich unser Leben verbringen möchten... Wer wir eigentlich sein wollen... Welche Rolle wir haben..." Julia, Dubrovnik 2019 Aus den Gesprächen mit ihnen kann man sich viel mitnehmen, wenn man in einer ähnlichen Situation steckt.
