The best laid schemes o' mice an' men... Well, we had quite the plans for the planking party and though we did get some accomplished, in the end they did go 'awry'. Our plan was to continue planking as we were and hoped that we could have a team scarfing planks while two others were working in the boathouse hanging them. In theory, we felt one could keep up with the others. However, right before we started, we were encouraged to put in stealers to make up a bit of distance to the sheer in the aft end, and this meant that we needed to put in a 'funky' plank above them to match. It turned out, this plank was much more work than we anticipated. This paired with some uncooperative cedar planks, which kept breaking on us, meant that much of the 'hanging planks' part of the party came to a crawl. This compounded with the threat of COVID19, meant that we ultimately decided to shut down the operation and send the team home to be safe. It wasn't all a bust though. We have had a lot going on here at the boatyard. With having to revamp the roof due to the new building inspector in town, to getting the new thicknesser up and running, to getting the last oak planks on the boat before we leave for Costa Rica. We manage to get most of that done. In order to accomplish all this though, we have to go through some of the steps. One of which is getting the trusses made for the new roof. Not an easy task in the middle of winter in New England! With all of this going on, we still had to work on the oak plank we started to hang because we can't leave it sitting while we are gone in Costa Rica for two weeks. So, Alix, Keira and Steve go through the usual process of getting the plank on and off the boat over and over again in order to get it to fit. Which, also includes a bit more steaming to get the most curvy parts to fit properly. There is a serious need for speed out there right now. From state of the art super sleek foiling Moths that will go upwind at 20knots, to ice yachts that will hit 80mph and more - both of which we cover in this episode. But what's really grabbed our attention recently are three fascinating record breaking campaigns. Two are focussed on the outright sailing speed record that look to flight as a large part of the answer. And yet the very team you might have thought was up for a record breaking blast along a 500m course is actually having a crack at being the fastest on dry land. Emirates Team New Zealand might have led the foiling agenda for over a decade and have two consecutive America’s Cup wins to prove it, but they now want to set a speed record on land. We find out why…and how. So, on the face of it, it’s a mixed up world but the speed sailing scene is an exciting one, especially when you look at the radical machines that these teams are developing. We are not able to sail across oceans due to the covid restrictions, but we can still go sailing! We woke up to a great wind and blue skies, a rare occasion in Langkawi during the wet season. What better time then to go have some fun. Winds up! Sails up! Let's go sailing, Destination, NO WHERE! The swell free waters of Langkawi, Malaysia is great fun to play in with the wind up. We tack our way down the straight and are met with another vessel who lays down the challenge to Nandji. Time to test out our racing skills! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World!
