Is fixing up an old sailboat with 500 huge, rotten blisters worth the time and money? In this episode, we reflect if it worth doing this blister repair job to our old boat, and how much it cost to do the blister repair, and painting. Should we have just bought a new boat without any hull blisters? Or is any sailboat, old or new, just a treadmill of maintenance and repair? In South Africa, we did a huge resin blister repair job on our 1976, Valiant 40 sailboat, named Brick House, which took months and months, a lot of work, and some cash. We then painted the boat, and made some other cosmetic repairs before launching her to continue sailing around South Africa, and eventually across the South Atlantic. Patrick demonstrates how he finished the blister repair, fared, puttied and sanded, and did a total boat restoration on our old Valiant 40. Step by Step, our sailboat is transformed from an old blistered boat to a gorgeous, smooth, sleek looking yacht! A new boat would be nice...but we there is positive economics with doing work in a foreign country and build equity into our mobile home. Unless someone gives us a nice new Swan 48 that requires no maintenance or upgrades yeah right!) , we will keep up the maintenance on our boat to keep is better than new. We pushed really hard to get the bronze floors finished up so they could be sitting in their places during the open house. In this episode we show how we got the floors ready to start fabricating the supports for the engine beds. Since everything fits in such a small space here and has to be fairly precise, we had to work on fabricating the floors while working wit the actual engine beds we are going to install. We therefore worked on each piece simultaneously to end up with a perfect fit. The stern floors are so much higher in order to be at an appropriate height to accommodate and support the engine which also meant very large wings up the frames. If the ones down the rest of the center line took a while, these were that much more time consuming again! To put the correct twist and bend in a piece of bronze strapping one half inch thick by twenty four inches in length on a small A-frame press was challenging to say the least! We set out from New Caledonia to cover the final stretch of water before we will have truly sailed across the entire Pacific Ocean. Conditions were a bit rough, with 20-30 knots and 3m swells directly on the beam most of the way. The stiff breeze meant fast sailing and we made landfall in Brisbane, Australia after six days. Sailing safety is critical, and the choices of equipment and its usage can significantly impact on the chances of survival in an emergency. While the harnesses on life vests are essential, the tethers, which keep you attached to the boat, secured incorrectly, can be a matter of life or death. The harness on the life vest (PFD) meets ISO and/or USCG load bearing standards and are specific designed for that purpose. A quick-release tether or Harness Release System (HRS) is generally considered safer than a line tied to a life vest or harness. Specifically, tying a line to a life-vest will most likely tear the vest apart and separate the person from the vest. Further more, studies have proven that a line tied directly to a life vest or harness creates a significant entanglement risk and dragging and drowning risk. In the event of a fall overboard or capsizing the sailboat, sailors can be quickly and fatally trapped or dragged to death. The victim may find themselves inverted, unable to reach the water's surface, or be able to create enough force needed to cut a line with a knife while under water. Conversely, a quick-release tether offers a crucial safety advantage. Designed to detach when tripped, it prevents the wearer from becoming ensnared or dragged. In emergency situations, the tether can be easily released, allowing the individual to swim freely and reach the surface. This added mobility can mean the difference between life and death. Furthermore, a tied-down life vest can impede rescue efforts. Rescuers may encounter difficulties in freeing the victim from the entanglement, wasting precious time. A quick-release tether eliminates this obstacle, enabling rescuers to focus on bringing the individual to safety. A quick-release tether prioritizes safety and mobility, reducing the risk of drowning and facilitating rescue. It is essential for individuals engaging in sailing to understand the implications of their equipment choices and to opt for the safest option available. A quick-release snap shackle at the harness end of a tether is especially important in case the wearer becomes trapped under an inverted boat (as happened in the 1998 Sydney-Hobart Race) or in a tight spot, like on the wrong side of a jib sheet. The Tartan 37 is ours, and it’s time to celebrate! With the 4th of July arriving just days after we close on the boat, we decide it’s rather fitting to pop some bubbly and celebrate our own new-found freedom… from land! The hardest part of moving aboard is figuring out where to put our stuff. Fortunately we had already done most of our downsizing when we left California a half year prior. We learn how to cook on our alcohol stove and adjust to our “front door” raising and lowering 3 feet depending on the height of the river. Being connected to shore power makes it feel more like we’re living in a teeny tiny apartment with misshapen cabinet spaces. After a week of living on our sailboat, we start to settle in. We figure out where our new workspaces are (the salon table, the chart table) and get most of our stuff stowed away. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life. We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams. After having to come back into the Caribbean to repair our hurricane damaged catamaran, we find home in a place called Linton bay, near the Panama Canal, where we take a few days to explore the area before we get to work. With cracked bulkheads and almost all of her electronics destroyed by lightning, this salvage boat needs a major rebuild before she can head out into the Pacific Ocean again, but the crew are determined to make this happen. SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged 2012 Lagoon 450 Catamaran bought in Tortola, BVI at the beginning of 2018.
