Episode 6 of Short Stories showcases that one of the best Giant Black Marlin fishing destinations in the world is right on our doorstep on the Great Barrier Reef. Every year the heavy tackle season brings renowned captains, boats and serious anglers to Cooktown in Far North Queensland, on a mission to catch a Grander - the 1000lb Black Marlin. We spent 5 days and nights fishing with our good mate Kleiny, one of Australia’s top game fishing captains, who runs “Deploy” - a 58 foot Assegai, built purely for this type of fishing up on the Great Barrier Reef. With 5 of our best mates and 2 awesome crew, we had the experience of a lifetime. Mornings started with swims and snorkelling on the reef, followed by spearfishing for some Coral Trout and a jig for some Dogtooth Tuna, or mixing it for a stick bait on some GTs - to then bait fishing catching bait big enough to call dinner for a week – which includes Spanish Mackeral, tuna, wahoo, scaleys, the list goes on. Afternoons were spent trolling the reefs, targeting marlin in comfort on the deck and enjoying the boat's mezzanine. And in the evenings we'd relive the moments from the day, catch trevally right off the back of the boat (on a handline with a hook and no bait!), and drank and ate like kings with 5-star catering cooked fresh by the crew.  Our first fish was one most only dream about; a giant black marlin well over 1000lbs!! Followed by a 700lb, 600lb, and a few other monsters, totalling 9 marlin in 5 days and hundreds of other fish and good times.  Once you experience a trip like this, safe to say, you'll never go a year without heading north again.

Curious to WHERE we are at the moment in real time, and what our plans are for hurricane season? Let us fill you in! Currently we have Elements of Life in Sint Maarten, and in the next few days we'll be leaving for an Atlantic Ocean crossing, heading east. Our plan ever since we bought the boat (while sitting in the Azores in 2014) was to bring her back that direction, and then go north, eventually up to Norway. We won't be able to make it that far this year, but we're starting the process. Leaving from Simpson Bay in Sint Maarten, we'll travel approximately 2,400 nautical miles to the Azores, which we'll explore until mid to late July, and then it will be time to head even further north. Our next stop will be Ireland where we'll run out our 90 day visa there, and then jump over to the U.K., where Elements will sit for the winter until we can make our way to Norway next summer. During the winter we plan to leave the boat for a few months and head to warmer weather. Where to exactly? We're not sure. Maybe bum around a boat in the Caribbean, or hang out with my parents in Arizona. You might be wondering....why are your videos so far behind? You're publishing content from the Bahamas, yet you're all the way down in St. Martin. Yes...the videos are about two months behind real time. Between having enough videos ready to upload during our ocean crossing, and taking time off due to a death in the family, I haven't been able to keep the publishing schedule I wish I could have. But let's catch you up on where we've been these past two months. Leaving from Eleuthera in March, we took the route sometimes referred to as I-65, heading straight east and then dropping down into the Caribbean. After 950 miles and 8 days at sea, we made landfall in St. Barth's. With beautiful beaches and wonderful French pastries, we could have spent months there, although running out of propane (and needing to get Georgie to the vet) sent us running to Sint Marrten for a few days. As soon as all of our tasks were taken care of it was right back to St. Barth's for their annual regatta (Les Voiles de St. Barth). We spent our days lounging at evenings going to the awards ceremonies and concerts, and even had a surprise show by Jimmy Buffet! After the Voiles de St. Barth we made the trip to Antigua for their annual race week, the largest in the Caribbean. For the Round the Island Race, we jumped on a Pogo 12.50 through Ocean Racers. One day on that boat and I was left with burns and bruises, so it was nice to move to the Club Class on our friend's Rival 38 (Jamel Lister of Lister Marine). Leaving Antigua after an amazing three weeks, we had one more island in the Caribbean that we HAD to check off our list before preparing for our ocean crossing....Saba. A dormant volcano with villages built into the peaks. We even climbed to the top of Mt. Scenery...after having walked the road to get there from the harbour. And now....we're off! Unfortuneately we're hit with a little snafu in Staniel Cay and we have to rush off to George Town. It's all good though, we're just stoked to have wind and good weather for our trip. Oh dear…This one’s for you dreamers out there who will one day become newbie boat owners, just like us. Take notes! Hopefully you won’t have to make these same mistakes. Last episode, we had issues with our centerboard, which were — surprise! — caused by yours truly. We ended up running aground, because unbeknownst to us, our board had dropped down; the temporary line we had slung under the boat to hold the board up had slipped off the keel. After building a new mast plug to properly crank the board back up into the trunk, we had to haul out to free the stuck centerboard pennant. This whole ordeal turned out to be Bad Thing #1. Finally, all was well, and we were back on the river, heading south. The mast unstepping and haul out had us feeling pretty ragged, and in desperate need of a hot shower. We arrived at our first marina only to find they had no such thing, only port-a-potties. They did have diesel, so we quickly filled up and rushed off to the next marina with water, forgetting to put the fuel cap back on the deck fill. This led to Bad Thing #2. At the next marina, Kirk thought it would be a good idea to clean the boat, as she was incredibly dirty after spending three days in the boat yard under the Skyway Bridge. With the fuel cap still off, this meant all the water he sprayed was washing right down the deck and into the fuel tank. *Facepalm. Water in our fuel was very very bad. The guys in the service center at the marina told us if it was a small amount of water, we could probably get away with replacing our fuel filter and all would be well. We set about changing the filter — for our first time ever. After the swap, we started the engine, and it fired right up! We ran it for 30 minutes, and this, we read, should mean we’re in the clear. As this took us the better part of the afternoon to figure out how to change the filter, we decided to continue our journey the next morning. We spent the evening applying sound deadening material to our engine room. The next morning, we fired up the engine (again!) and set off south. We made it 1/4 of a mile… and the engine DIED. Bad Thing #3. We drifted, slowly losing steering. Kirk threw the dinghy in the water and rowed us the last few hundred feet toward a dock, but before we could get there, we ran aground, again. What did we do wrong? Why wouldn’t the engine start? We wracked our brains. You need three things to run a diesel engine: compression, oxygen and fuel. Kirk knew it couldn’t be the first two — we didn’t change anything with those. It had to be a fuel problem, but we had ran the engine for a half hour already. How could there still be air in the lines? We tried bleeding them again, to no avail. Then, we remembered towing was included in our insurance coverage, and we figured, this is as good of time as any to call for a tow. An hour later, an incredibly nice tow boat operator from BoatUS brought us back to the marina we had just left. Now, to figure out why the engine wouldn’t start… We’ll let you watch to find out what happens. ;) Hope you enjoy! Lauren & Kirk P.S. Great barrier island is part of New Zealand but lies 60 nautical miles off the coast of Auckland. We had a great morning exploring the underwater sights Barbados had to offer as we got towed behind Geoff using a second hand kids body board! Great cheap fun, all you need is a tow rope, small body board, tight bikini bottoms hahaha and a similar boat to Geoff! (a tender). After our underwater fun we picked up anchor, said goodbye to the beautiful Barbados and sailed overnight to the stormy St Lucia. We arrived to a spectacular coastline full of volcanos and a burst of natural splendour with every turn. We anchored in the stunning Cove call Marigot Bay, just South of Rodney Bay. Enjoy! The freediving mechanic For those of you that don’t know us, we’ve just finished refitting our Open 66, here in Fiji. Last week we had our first real cyclone scare of the season and decided to seek shelter in a protected bay surrounded by reef called musket cove. Just as we were entering through the reef pass, our gearbox failed… We attached our dinghy to the side of the boat to help drive us in through the last reef pass and get our anchor down safely.
