It didn’t take long for the first major development to break-cover in this race to Barcelona for the 37th America’s Cup and today Emirates Team New Zealand revealed the first phase of its design development process with the sailing team thoroughly testing a new port foil out on Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf. Kelly Hartzell, a Mechatronics Engineer at Emirates Team New Zealand gives her thoughts on day 1 with the new foil. Section 41. Maxime Bachelin’s rise to the wheel of an America’s Cup boat has been stellar. A solid background in dinghies from Optimists, to 420’s and then through to the 49er led him to the foiling classes where he’s been an integral part of the Alinghi Red Bull Racing Team GC32 programme but today (Monday) he found himself on the wheel of BoatZero as the alternate pod helm to designated skipper Arnaud Psarofaghis and it’s a day he’s unlikely to forget: “It was my first day at the helm, with Arnaud, it was a very nice experience. It was going well but today was quite touch. It was quite windy with big waves that were not in the same angle as the wind so it was quite difficult.” Section 41. After a scheduled weekend off, the team were back on the water early on Monday with a 0715 crane-in for the shore crew to once again catch the early morning breeze before it faded at lunchtime. The big concentration in the relatively short time that the team had on the water was in the sail plan as Olympic Nacra 17 representative and now jib trimmer on Patriot, Riley Gibbs, confirmed, saying: “We were just looking at some jib geometry with the new self-tacking jib and trying to remedy some issues.” Section 41. Ep 20 Sailing Free Spirit – Today we drove down to Fort Lauderdale and picked up the newly done Perkins 4.236 engine for us. This engine was created or pulled from a Marine Generator and converted to our boat engine. While she isn’t pretty, she works and will be out main power source for boat and to get us everywhere we want to be! Today is the journey to pick it up. We were told it would be ready at noon for pickup… we waited all day to get it and of course, it wasn’t even close to be ready but we weren’t leaving until we got it to bring home. The tell-tale sign that the Mediterranean weather is on the turn could be seen most evidently with the Alinghi Red Bull Racing team all breaking out the winter drysuits in sync today for a late afternoon training session amidst falling sea and air temperatures. Gone are the shorts and sun protectors of an endless summer where temperatures touched the low 40’s this year, and it was down to business as BoatZero docked out after lunch at 12.55pm in search of breeze knowing that the ‘golden hour’ which blesses this part of the world on a frequent basis, towards sunset, was where the maximum gains could be made. Interesting to see today an almost continuous rotation of sailing advisers and the mainsail trimmer standing well aft and as Florian Trub, a very popular member of the power unit and jib trimmer commented: “We did all the testing that we wanted to do today. It was a very good day. We were trying out a lot of different settings and sometimes (the person on the stern) is the mainsail trimmer looking at both sails and whether they are in sync or a coaching consultant to have an overview of both cockpits; because you have a mainsail in between and you don’t see each other; so sometimes it’s good to have a coach on the back of the boat to see what both sides are doing.” Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away.
