So, what a day for the American Magic Team out in Pensacola who completed a thorough day of training at near enough race pace out on the smooth waters of the Bay throwing in some 30 tacks and 15 gybes with very little downtime between, over a 70 nautical mile track, only coming in when the big yellow orb in the sky dipped below the horizon. It was a full-on session lasting over five hours and as Andrew Campbell, one of the most experienced Flight Controllers in this America’s Cup cycle commented: “We had to wait for it, the mixing and the cold when we went out this morning made it a little funky…but once the breeze filled in, it was really nice out there. About as good as it gets.” Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It's a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports. #AC37Recon #AmericasCup #Barcelona2024

The island of Mallorca is hands down one of the most beautiful islands in all the Mediterranean, but as it turns out, we’re not the only ones that know about it. With a coastline short on anchorages with really good protection and hoards of sailboats filling every nook and cranny, Mallorca can be both unbelievably jaw dropping and utterly frustrating. Now we are currently underway to Mallorca which should take us about two days. But this won’t be our first time visiting this bipolar island. Ten years ago Desiree and I met while working on super yachts, and Mallorca is where we first fell in love. Sailing Free Spirit. Yay! The engine gets placed in with a crane and we need to create the Engine panel so Frankenstein will run. What a super exciting day for us and we have been waiting for what seems like a very long time, we are finally getting ready to get off and out of the dry dock and back into the water. Andy is quite talkative today and I took this down as much as I could so the video doesn’t start until like 9 min in… Around 13 min is where you will see the engine getting dropped in. Around the 15 min mark we get spicy with each other… trying to create the engine control panel. Around 22 min we start to get aggravated with each other but this is the worst that we get with each other, ever! Andy’s humor comes out and banter back and forth like we do at home. Still trying to figure out why everything is always Nancy’s fault… (hope you stay on long enough to see that part!) Please like, subscribe and share this video. Some smaller outboard boats and dinghies don't have a steering wheel. Instead, they have a tiller. A tiller is a handle attached directly to a boat's outboard engine that is both for steering and the throttle. BoatUS Magazine's Lenny Rudow shows you how to drive a tiller steer outboard boat using his crab skiff, but you might find an outboard tiller on a dinghy as well. One of the advantages of driving a tiller-steer outboard is its maneuverability. A tiller steer boat will turn effortlessly, even at idle speeds, but it does take some time to get used to it because you push and pull the tiller to steer instead of turning a wheel. And it's not always intuitive. Also, you have to rotate the handle at the same time for more or less speed. Another advantage of tiller steering is that it takes up less room on the boat, perfect for carrying passengers or offering more space to move around. In this video, Lenny will explain the benefits of a tiller steer boat, show you how tiller steering works, and demonstrate the different parts of a tiller including the gear shift, throttle, and tensioner. 🚩Enjoy this video? Sailing style and technique seemed as much in focus today out in Pensacola, with the American Magic Team, as data gathering. Yes, Patriot is now fitted with a couple of cameras relentlessly focussed on the foils, but what was most evident was in how the team were sailing upwind with a noticeable windward heel akin to fast-foiling dinghies such as the International Moth or Waszp. John Croom is a transfer-athletes having spent his pro-cycling career competing on the track in events like the Madison, Omnium and Team Pursuit, winning Gold at the Pan-American championships in 2019. These are a special breed of modern-day sailors, calm, collected, and totally unfazed by the demands of America’s Cup yachting as John eloquently displayed in interview afterwards when asked about the difference between track cycling and yacht-cycling: “It’s just like a stroll through the park. It’s just like peddling a bike really!” Section 41. BoatTEST recently conducted a test on the innovative Sharrow propellers, but due to popular demand, this one was a little different. We didn’t test it on a commercial boat, or a large catamaran, a massive center console, or a tiny bowrider. No, this time it was on what is probably the most average size, weight and category of boat out there… the Robalo R302. Read more about our test here: https://boattest.com/node/129424
The Pensacola breeze came in today, serving up a blustery 17-20 knots for the American Magic Team over a short, sharp chop that put an emphasis on heavy-weather control and crew co-ordination. The power group on the cyclors were rotated periodically to provide ultimate output but the day was dogged by technical issues as Trevor Burd described: “We had a bit of an issue with the hydros at one point today, so it was a matter of getting the part out, onshore, a little tickle up, having the guys take a look at it and then it run it back out to us.” SUBSCRIBE to the official America's Cup channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/americascup Like America’s Cup On Facebook: www.facebook.com/americascup Follow America’s Cup On Twitter: www.twitter.com/americascup Follow America’s Cup On Instagram: www.instagram.com/americascup Stay up to date with the America’s Cup newsletter: www.americascup.com/en/newsletter The 37th America's Cup will be Defended in Barcelona by four-time America's Cup winner, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron represented by their team, Emirates Team New Zealand. #AmericasCup #AC37 #Barcelona

After a day of house-keeping yesterday with BoatZero receiving a healthy shot of new hydraulic fluid just outside the shed for all the systems, it was a short day out on the water in Barcelona today for the Alinghi Red Bull Racing Team; but from a recon perspective it was significant with the first sighting of the new re-cut M1-1R mainsail now adapted for the boomless set-up. And from a pure aero perspective it’s possibly the neatest we’ve seen to date with the hydraulic system well shielded through a cleverly cut bottom panel and a very flat lower section housing the leech tensioner. Bryan Mettraux, one of the key members of the Alinghi Red Bull Racing Driving Group with a strong background in the team’s GC32 and D35 campaigns who switches between mainsail and flight control was naturally coy about the abandoned session but made the best of the situation saying: “Today the wind was light and the waves really big so we just got out to test the M1 which we did the modification on for the boomless system and it was the first time that we hoisted this system so we did a few load tests and everything went well.” Section 41. Join me on a tour of this incredible Custom Line 120 super yacht! This Italian luxury superyacht was first delivered in 2018 with a refit in 2021. Custom Line is a brand owned by the Ferretti Group. One amazing feature that stands out is the ability to completely open the space between the aft deck and the main salon via the floor to ceiling glass doors which rise up. I also really liked the float-in float-out garage and all the functionality inside that area. Let me know what you think in the comments down below! It didn’t take long for the first major development to break-cover in this race to Barcelona for the 37th America’s Cup and today Emirates Team New Zealand revealed the first phase of its design development process with the sailing team thoroughly testing a new port foil out on Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf. Kelly Hartzell, a Mechatronics Engineer at Emirates Team New Zealand gives her thoughts on day 1 with the new foil. Section 41.
The A5 is powered by a 100-hp Rotax 912 engine that gives it a top speed of 109 mph (176 kph) and the company says it burns less than 4 gallons per hour, giving it a range of 500 miles over land with a 45-minute reserve. It runs on 91 octane or 100LL aviation fuel. Capt Steve takes it on a test flight - may be one of the most luxurious boat toys one can buy. Sign up to Morning Brew for free today https://morningbrewdaily.com/BigOldBoats Sponsored by Morning Brew The Great Lakes Storm of 1913, also known as the White Hurricane sank 12 freighters. The worst of the storm hit Lake Huron and generated winds that exceeded 90 miles per hour and waves of over 35 feet. These conditions made survival almost impossible for even the largest vessels and many of those that didn't sink grounded in the storm, ironically saving them in most cases. SS Henry B. Hawgood and SS Howard M. Hanna Jr. were two of the lucky ones who narrowly survived the storm of the century. Maxime Bachelin’s rise to the wheel of an America’s Cup boat has been stellar. A solid background in dinghies from Optimists, to 420’s and then through to the 49er led him to the foiling classes where he’s been an integral part of the Alinghi Red Bull Racing Team GC32 programme but today (Monday) he found himself on the wheel of BoatZero as the alternate pod helm to designated skipper Arnaud Psarofaghis and it’s a day he’s unlikely to forget: “It was my first day at the helm, with Arnaud, it was a very nice experience. It was going well but today was quite touch. It was quite windy with big waves that were not in the same angle as the wind so it was quite difficult.” Section 41. After a scheduled weekend off, the team were back on the water early on Monday with a 0715 crane-in for the shore crew to once again catch the early morning breeze before it faded at lunchtime. The big concentration in the relatively short time that the team had on the water was in the sail plan as Olympic Nacra 17 representative and now jib trimmer on Patriot, Riley Gibbs, confirmed, saying: “We were just looking at some jib geometry with the new self-tacking jib and trying to remedy some issues.” Section 41.
