In this week’s video, we install a Winchmax windlass remote on Lady Aquitaine the yacht of Patreons Ian & Dasha a 57ft Hanse. After Ian’s wander lead failed somewhere deep in the boat’s wiring loom, we helped them safely get on a buoy and rigged a temporary fix so they could still anchor. We then ordered a Winchmax unit for just £42.95, which Cindy brought back with her. Fast forward a few days, and Ian’s boat now has full remote control of the windlass from anywhere onboard—sorted! Elsewhere in the episode, our Tohatsu 3.5hp outboard we are repairing gives us a big headache and there are daytime fireworks and fighting fish making things lively around the boat. Ti spieghiamo come prevenirla, cosa fare in emergenza, come usare correttamente il VHF e quali sono le regole (e i costi) del rimorchio in mare. Un contenuto indispensabile per chi va in barca, sia a vela che a motore. --- ### ✅ La prevenzione è tutto Prima di uscire in mare, è fondamentale calcolare con attenzione il carburante necessario. Il consiglio è semplice ma spesso ignorato: **porta sempre almeno il 30% in più** del carburante stimato in base alla durata della navigazione e al consumo medio del motore. Esempio: se prevedi 4 ore di navigazione a un consumo medio di 100 litri/ora, prepara almeno **520 litri**, considerando la riserva. --- ### 🚨 Cosa fare se rimani senza carburante in mare? Se succede, niente panico. 1. **Usa la radio VHF**, sintonizzandoti sul **canale 16**, dedicato alle comunicazioni di emergenza con la Capitaneria di Porto. 2. **Spiega chiaramente la situazione**. Non preoccuparti del linguaggio tecnico: è più importante essere chiari che perfetti. Se non sai usare il VHF, dillo apertamente. 3. **Segui le istruzioni**: ti verrà fornita assistenza, spesso tramite un rimorchio verso il porto più vicino. --- ### 💰 Il rimorchio si paga! Ricorda che chi ti soccorre sta impiegando tempo, carburante e risorse. Non è un servizio gratuito: **il rimorchio va pagato**, anche solo per riconoscenza o per coprire le spese vive. In casi internazionali o con navi commerciali, si può arrivare a pagare **fino al 5% del valore del carico o dell’imbarcazione**, ma per le imbarcazioni da diporto si resta su cifre più ragionevoli. --- ### 📲 Esistono app per trovare carburante in mare? Non esistono app specifiche per "benzinai marini", ma le **cartografie GPS nautiche** (come quelle Garmin) mostrano i punti di interesse, tra cui i porti con distributori di carburante. Addy movies to the beat on the bus, we swim and jump at the stunning Annandale Waterfall, and spot a cheeky monkey in the trees. In St. George’s, we wander through the colourful spice market, grab some fresh nutmeg, and learn how chocolate is made at the House of Chocolate, with a little taste test, of course! Addy and I visit the gorgeous Tower Estate gardens, and we move our boat to True Blue, where we enjoy sweet land showers, relaxing poolside, and I finally catch up on some video editing. We spend the remainder of the summer sailing to anchorages along the Côte d'Azur. Poquerolles was wonderful and had a nice protected anchorage with easy access to the town via a dinghy beach. There is a nice vineyard there to tour and a small chandlery. The best swimming beach was at plage de l'Estagnol. It was crowed but fun. Restaurant was "mid" as my kids would say! The other "secret anchorage" behind a cape provides minimal protection but had the clearest water we've seen. We then headed back to Cogolin and performed the 2024 winterization.

This week aboard SV GOAT, we faced one of the most infuriating and dangerous moments of our sailing journey so far—a near-collision with a superyacht caused entirely by the arrogance and stubbornness of its captain. It all began when a 200-foot superyacht decided to med-moor directly over our anchor, despite my repeated warnings over VHF and hand signals. Instead of adjusting or listening to reason, the captain arrogantly proceeded with his maneuver, dismissing our concerns entirely. Anyone with anchoring experience knows: crossed anchors are a recipe for disaster. And then, exactly as forecasted, a strong southerly wind rolled in. As the gusts built, our boats were pushed dangerously close—our stern threatening to swing straight into their gleaming hull. The tension skyrocketed as I scrambled on deck, shouting warnings and cursing at full volume to make the captain finally understand the severity of his mistake. It took intense shouting, heated words, and a lot of stress before the yacht’s crew finally relented and moved the vessel away. They repositioned just in time to avoid disaster. It could have been catastrophic—for both them and us—all because of one man’s ego. IN THIS EPISODE: – A tense and dangerous anchoring situation with a superyacht – Why crossed anchors are a serious risk (especially in strong winds) – Holding position as a forecasted southerly blows through – Strong words exchanged and how the situation was barely resolved in time – Reflections on etiquette, seamanship, and how ego has no place at sea This was one of those moments that reminds us how quickly things can escalate on the water. When you mix poor decisions with expensive toys and a lack of respect for others, everyone’s safety is put at risk. Fortunately, we avoided the worst—but not without frustration, shouting, and a heavy dose of reality about what can happen when people ignore basic seamanship. In this episode, we spend time with an incredible NGO in Malta that’s doing vital work to clean up the harbours. These dedicated volunteers aren’t afraid to get stuck in—literally diving into the water to pull up years’ worth of rubbish and debris from the seabed. It was both shocking and inspiring to watch them in action. At one point, we saw them haul up huge ropes, tangled fishing nets, and even old tyres that had been lying underwater for who knows how long. It’s a powerful reminder of the impact pollution has on our oceans, but also of the difference people can make when they care enough to take action. What really struck us was the energy and passion of the team. This isn’t glamorous work—it’s cold, wet, and physically demanding—but their sense of purpose was contagious. They’re not just cleaning harbours; they’re helping to restore marine ecosystems and make the waterfronts safer and more beautiful for everyone.
