Here are highlights from the 2015 Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, won by England's Royal Thames Yacht Club.

L’embarquement est programmé pour la marée haute de 16h, via un petit ponton délabré qui ne tient plus que par miracle. Mais nous sommes à Madagascar et malgré l’état déplorable des installations portuaires, la bonne humeur est toujours présente ! Avec l’aide de Jeff et Sebastien, nos deux nouveaux marins de choc, la montagne de bagages prend place à bord. Puis c’est au tour des scientifiques d’embarquer. L’équipe est composée des mêmes participants, hormis deux nouveaux : Corinne qui remplace Martine pour la sécurité plongée et assiste Lionel sur les coraux et Serge, le «petit» nouveau qui n’a pas encore ses marques à bord d’Antsiva et est chargé de la cartographie des habitats récifaux. Les retrouvailles sont bruyantes et chaleureuses. C’est le début d’une nouvelle mission et les toutes premières heures sont toujours marquées par un grand soulagement mêlé à une certaine excitation partagée par tous. Mais, le temps de travail des scientifiques est précieux et l’objectif premier est d’atteindre Juan de Nova au plus vite. Aussi levons nous l’ancre aussitôt laissant l’équipe s’installer à bord, chacun retrouvant sa cabine et ses habitudes. Vendredi 6 décembre La navigation s’effectue tranquillement au moteur. Une navigation particulièrement Zen permettant la lecture, le repos, les bavardageset les briefings ou encore le travail sur ordinateur. Ces deux jours de traversée sont aussi pour les scientifiques un moyen de faire le point, une parenthèse dans le temps, un moment de décompression où ils lâchent prise sur les problèmes quotidiens et se consacrent aux derniers préparatifs de la mission. Samedi 7 décembre 7h du matin, arrivée au mouillage de Juan de Nova. Nous prenons aussitôt contact avec les militaires pour leur signaler notre présence et éventuellement leur demander de l’aide pour le transport du matériel. Pas de chance, c’est la relève sur l’île et le nouveau contingent est attendu dans la matinée. Ils ont donc peu de temps à consacrer aux scientifiques. Ils parviennent néanmoins à se libérer avant l’arrivée du Transal et les bagages de l’équipe à terre sont transférés par tracteur jusqu’à l’ancienne gendarmerie. Pendant ce temps, Serge et Lionel sont déjà au travail et effectuent une première station de cartographie non loin du mouillage. En fin de matinée, Sébastien le journaliste cameraman, laissé sur l’île lors de la rotation précédente, nous rejoint et l’équipe au grand complet se trouve réunie pour un déjeuner à bord d’Antsiva. L’après-midi, une première plongée Biodiversité est programmée alors que l’équipe à terre composée de Joseph, Nicky, Maya et Lydiane débarque pour installer leur laboratoire. L’ancienne gendarmerie située au nord de l’île va en effet constituer leur camp de vie et de travail pendant toute la durée de la mission. Cette base offre de grands locaux plutôt confortables mais présente l’inconvénient d’être éloignée de la caserne, ce qui implique de fréquents allers/retours aux heures des repas. Ce soir, un grand pot d’accueil est prévu chez les militaires. Pascale s’y rend en compagnie d’une partie de l’équipe. Dans la soirée, le vent se lève assez fort. La nuit promet d’être bien ventilée ! Dimanche 8 décembre Au matin, le vent souffle toujours et la mer s’est creusée rendant la plongée impossible. Afin de ne pas perdre de temps, Plume, Lionel et Serge effectuent une station de cartographie en apnée. Après le déjeuner, comme les conditions météo ne se sont pas améliorées, les plongeurs rejoignent l’équipe à terre pour travailler sur le platier à marée basse. Pendant ce temps, afin d’améliorer les conditions de travail de l’équipe à terre, nous descendons deux kayaks et un congélateur. Les kayaks vont permettre aux scientifiques de se déplacer plus rapidement sur le platier car à Juan de Nova, les distances sont grandes et les marches avec de l’eau à mi-cuisse sous un soleil de plomb sont parfois éprouvantes. Le congélateur débarqué d’Antsiva et installé dans l’ancienne gendarmerie va fournir des pains de glace nécessaires à la conservation des échantillons.

Im September bei recht bockigem Wind waren wir am Kleinen Brombachsee. Wir hatten eine Menge Spaß mit meinem Happy Cat Evolution von Grabner. Der Vorschoter war das erste mal dabei und sehr begeistert. Der Brombachsee ist sehr empfehlenswert. Es gibt viele Parkplätze und Stellen zum Aufbau sowie slippen des Kats. Yup! I went sailing today but only for a few hours. In fact, the purpose was many to do some harbour manoeuvres but it turns out there is so much stuff growing under the boat that it's only barely able to motor. When I got back to the boat I got started on a few minor jobs aboard the boat. The LED mentioned are these: http://www.batsystem.se/en/belysning/ljuskallor/led/94g4b Note that they are rated at 8-30V which makes them suited for use aboard a boat even without a voltage regulator - that's not true for all LEDs.

Impressionen eines tollen Törns: In der ersten Woche segelten wir durch die Kornaten. Das Wetter war toll, das Wasser blau und klar und lud jederzeit zum Schwimmen ein. Wir lernten ein wenig Land und Leute kennen, oft abseits der größeren Städte. Wir genossen die mediterrane Küche und ganz besonders die außergewöhnlich nette Gesellschaft in unserer Seglergemeinschaft. Viel Spaß!

It was down to the final race on the final day to determine first, second, and third, with the Royal Thames Yacht Club, the New York Yacht Club, and Eastern Sailing Club, respectively, grabbing the podium finishes. The New York Yacht Club certainly had the biggest come back of the race, climbing from ninth to second place during the last few days. Skipper of the NYYC team, Paul Zabetakis, knew the team had to dig in to be successful, however he knew is team would ultimately be able to do it. Congratulations to the team and all the competitors!

The fleet of 23 yachts set off under better conditions than were forecast. Chinese Whisper led the fleet out of the Harbour followed by Balance, Victoire and Triton. Dale Lorimer from Bow Caddy Media was on her usual 'faux chopper' position at North Head to catch the fleet.
