April 9 & 10 saw the second annual Sydney Sailboat Expo held in Manly. Over 50 exhibitors saw good constant flow crowds pass through the hill top venue. The weather was stunning. Boatson.tv was there and here's a clip of just some of the action.o.

Just a few minutes of flight over Oare Estuary, Faversham. Nothing fancy, its not edited and theres no sound but it was a lovely Sunday morning, great to walk the dog along the shore and get a few minutes in the air at the same time. unfortunately the dog blotted his copybook by; 1- running off when we opened the car door, 2- rolling in a dead fox & 3- he tried to bite a chap who was jogging along the path........happy days!!!

From Malta, the Shards sail north through the notorious Strait of Messina navigating the strong currents featured in Homer's "Odyssey" and eventually arrive at the island of Vulcano. There they swim in bubbling hot seawater from the volcano, dive on underwater bubbling gas vents, relax in healing mud pools and climb to the top of the island's steaming crater where their path is blocked by vents of toxic gas.

We take a local bus about an hour from Luperon, half way to Puerto Plata near the town of Imbert, to a beautiful and fun set of waterfalls that you can swim, hike, and slide up and down. Most people do the first 7, it takes all day, but there is 27 in all. We along with 2 other cruising boats did the 7 and had a BLAST! One of the things we learned about cruising during our first season is that moving too quickly or visiting coastal ports alone, without traveling inland, is not truly experiencing a nation. After electing not to traverse the Pacific in 2015, we immersed ourselves in Central America and enjoyed three inland backpacking trips. We celebrated high holidays, trekked two volcanos, and helped our friends on s/v Meridian take their boat through the Panama Canal. These months were the highlight of our first season of cruising.
