Welcome aboard for another episode of our liveaboard sailing adventure! In this video, we head out into the stunning waters of Moreton Bay, Queensland, for a perfect day of sailing, fishing, and chasing wind. Life on a sailboat is always full of surprises—sometimes calm, sometimes thrilling—and this day on the water gave us a taste of it all. We start the day with rods in the water, fishing from the boat while drifting across the bay. As liveaboard sailors, catching fresh fish isn’t just a hobby, it’s a way to connect with the ocean and enjoy self-sufficiency while living off-grid. Whether you’re a passionate angler, a new sailboat owner, or a beginner sailor dreaming about cruising life, fishing from a sailboat is always an adventure in itself. But sailing is never just about waiting—it’s about chasing the wind. In this episode, we share the quiet moments of watching the horizon, looking for that first ripple of breeze. As the wind finally arrives, we hoist the sails, trim them tight, and feel the magic as the boat heels over and comes alive. For every sailor, that rush of energy when the sails fill and the yacht leans into the wind is the heartbeat of sailing. In this episode you’ll see: A day of sailing in Moreton Bay Fishing from the sailboat while cruising The reality of waiting for wind while living aboard The thrill of hoisting sails and feeling the boat heel Insights into the liveaboard sailing lifestyle Our channel is all about sailing around the world, sharing real stories of life aboard, from calm anchorages and fishing days to stormy passages and exciting off-grid adventures. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Canon R50 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Back up is a Canon 200d. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. I also use an Insta 360 and have two drones, a Magic mini2 and Mavic pro Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have limited communications with the outside World. Why Choose the 1985 Mercury Cruiser (Electric)? This retrofitted 1985 Mercury Cruiser offers a unique blend of vintage style and modern eco-consciousness. Its electric setup is ideal for short, slow cruises (e.g., harbor tours or calm bays), and the $5,000 price point makes it an accessible project boat. However, the 5-hour runtime at 4 knots limits its range, and the original design may not handle 10 people comfortably (more suited for 6-8). It’s a great choice for environmentally conscious boaters or those interested in experimenting with electric propulsion. Below are the links to the equipment used and specs of the boat. Solar Panels https://amzn.to/4mlCGKb M - Series battery switch https://amzn.to/47RsAgB Batteries 12V https://amzn.to/420CMQa Power inverter 5000w https://amzn.to/4nIUZKD Year: 1985 Original Manufacturer: Mercury Marine, in collaboration with various boat builders (e.g., Chris-Craft, Carver, or other OEMs), produced cruisers under the Mercury Cruiser or MerCruiser branding. These were typically equipped with MerCruiser sterndrive engines. Current Configuration: Converted to electric propulsion with a solar panel array, offering 5 hours of runtime at 4 knots. Market Value: $5,000 reflecting its age, condition. Length Overall (LOA): Likely 25-30 feet, based on the size relative to surrounding boats and typical cruiser designs of the era. The exact length isn’t specified, but the cabin and deck layout suggest a mid-sized vessel. Beam: Approximately 8.5-10 feet, common for cruisers to provide stability and interior space. Draft: Around 2.5-3 feet with a sterndrive, allowing access to shallow waters. Hull Material: Fiberglass, standard for Mercury Cruisers of this period. Displacement: Estimated 6,000-8,000 lbs (dry), depending on the model and equipment. Original Engine: Typically powered by a MerCruiser sterndrive, such as a 5.0L V8 (305 cubic inch) or 5.7L V8 (350 cubic inch) gasoline engine, producing 200-260 HP. The 4.7L V8 mentioned doesn’t align with Mercury’s catalog (the closest is the modern 4.6L V8 outboard from 2018), so the original was likely a different displacement. Fuel Capacity: Originally 100-150 gallons (gasoline), now irrelevant with the electric conversion. Water Capacity: Likely 30-50 gallons, typical for cruisers of this size. Cabin: Features a forward cabin with a V-berth or double berth, a compact galley (sink, stove, fridge), and a dinette that converts to additional sleeping space. Cockpit: Open rear deck for socializing or fishing, with potential for a small table or seating. Capacity: Designed for 6-8 people comfortably, with a maximum of 10 possible if equipped with additional seating and adhering to safety regulations (e.g., U.S. Coast Guard capacity plate). The electric conversion might limit load capacity due to battery weight. Benefits Eco-Friendly Cruising: The electric conversion with solar power eliminates fuel costs and emissions, aligning with green boating trends. The 5-hour runtime at 4 knots is suitable for leisurely day trips or harbor exploration. Affordable Entry: At a $5,000 market value, it’s a budget-friendly option for entry-level boating, especially with the added solar investment ($2,500). Low Maintenance: Electric motors require less upkeep than gasoline engines (no oil changes, fewer moving parts), though batteries and solar panels need periodic replacement or cleaning. Quiet Operation: Electric propulsion offers a silent ride, enhancing the experience in quiet anchorages. Retro Charm: The 1985 design retains a classic look, appealing to enthusiasts of vintage boats. Historical Context In the 1980s, Mercury Marine’s MerCruiser division produced sterndrive engines (inboard/outboard systems) for a range of cruisers built by various manufacturers. These boats were popular for their combination of performance and livability, often featuring V8 engines derived from automotive designs (e.g., GM 305 or 350 cubic inch blocks). The 1985 Mercury Cruiser would have been part of this era, offering speeds of 20-30 knots with its original gasoline engine. The conversion to electric power reflects a modern adaptation, likely replacing the sterndrive with an electric motor and integrating solar panels for charging. Maintenance Tips Solar Panels: Regularly clean the panels and check connections to maintain charging efficiency. The $2,500 value suggests a decent-sized array (e.g., 1-2 kW), so ensure it’s securely mounted. Batteries: Inspect and maintain the battery bank (likely lead-acid or lithium) for charge levels and corrosion. Replace every 5-10 years depending on usage. Hull: Check for gelcoat cracks or osmosis, common in 1980s fiberglass hulls, especially if used in saltwater.

This Catana 42, 'Bubu 2.0', is a carbon-infused high-performance catamaran comprehensively fitted out with premium gear for serious cruising. At first glance, the 42 may not look different from other catamarans in her size range, but once the sails are hoisted, the difference is clear. Thanks to its ideal beam-to-length ratio, adjustable daggerboards, tulip-shaped bows, and torpedo-shaped hulls, she is powerful yet light, and robust yet responsive. The daggerboards, in particular, deliver outstanding upwind performance. Her powerful single-spreader sloop rig carries a Hydranet mainsail and genoa, a lightweight furling genoa, furling Code D, and electric winches. Navigation is handled by an exhaustive NKE Marine Electronics suite, a benchmark in offshore racing and performance cruising. Communication and safety are equally well covered, with an extensive communications pack, infrared and interior cameras, Starlink, life raft, EPIRB, and more. Under power, 'Bubu 2.0' is equipped with twin 40 hp Volvo Penta saildrive diesels, supported by a generator, hydro generator, inverter, lithium batteries, solar panels, and a Victron Gebo CX energy management system. Further equipment includes a water maker, tender with outboard, davits, covers, complete cockpit enclosure, cockpit cushions and sunbeds for the coach roof. Also worth mentioning is the ton of storage on this boat including a big locker under the cockpit sole and a trio more forward. A big sliding-glass door provides entrance to the saloon offering a 360º panoramic view. There’s a nice forward-facing nav station to port; a dining table and settee to starboard; and a rear-facing galley aft that’s connected to the outdoor living areas through another sliding window. Natural light and ventilation fill the saloon and the cabins, while a Webasto heating system ensures comfort on cooler days. Descend the stairways in the starboard hull to access forward and aft guest cabins, which are separated by a storage locker and a shared bathroom with wash basin, electric toilet and shower facility. The entire port hull is dedicated to the owner’s suite, featuring a spacious double cabin aft and a generous forward bathroom with washbasin, manual toilet, and shower. Compact yet complete, 'Bubu 2.0' packs remarkable performance, technology, and liveaboard comfort into 42 feet, making her a standout in her class.

SURFRENZY simply exudes all the classic British mid-century charm expected of the Fairley Marine powerboats: practical, race-bred express cruisers with fine Ray Hunt/ Alan Burnard 'Deep-V' sea-keeping and handling provenance, and superb looks. Essentially a stretched Huntsman 28, the extra 5 feet of length allows the Swordsman 33 to offer either a huge cockpit, or this version with its en-suite double aft cabin neatly housed between the iconic swept coamings. https://www.sandemanyachtcompany.co.uk/yacht/771/SURFRENZY SURFRENZY has enjoyed few and careful ownerships with gentle upgrades over the years without any loss of charm or period feel. She has been lightly used in current ownership with her engines regularly serviced by a good marine engineer, and recently was treated to a transom rebuild by the skilled carpenters at Traditional Shipwright Services, Poole.
