More of Season 2 of The Boat Life Episode 5. We have been having engine issues since the start of our trip. After many calls to mechanics and talking with fellow boaters we are trying one last thing. We are flushing the diesel motors heat exchanger. a simple process, but it takes all day. The de scaler has to sit over night in the system before flushing it out. Melissa Auman and Nic Morganti decided to take advantage of the down time and explore the town of Venice, FL. We went to the jetty, checked out the fishing pier, and even found sharks teeth on the beach. Then We got caught in the rain. No big deal just a little liquid sunshine. Till we got back to the boat. Rain in the boat is never a good thing. It is all part of our adventure traveling to the islands. Our trip to the Bahamas is underway. We have set sail for the Exuma Islands.We are excited this trip has been almost 2 years in the making. If you don't count the first 20 years of dreaming about it. It is really happening. We go over why the new head didn't work on our engine, now going to do a full rebuild on our boat engine. Keep on digging and find more things that need to be replaced or repaired on this 2004 Bayliner Bowrider 175. For this boat we would really love not to spend over $5,000, our max budget is $10,000. Once back from the shop the fun will begin, we are in no rush to get this boat on the water, our goal is to learn how to boat. Virginia and Duke head to Belhaven, North Carolina to spend an extended weekend on the catamaran. The sailboat is berthed at Dowry Creek Marina for the winter, until it can be sailed North to New York in the spring. Somebody left an electric mobility scooter unattended in the Walmart parking lot! After spending the weekend on our catamaran, 9 LIVES, we stopped by a Walmart along the way home for something (What thing?). We decided to give the scooter a try, having never used one before. Just a short afternoon sail from the South River to Annapolis on a humid, early summer day. We get out to Thomas Point when NOAA starts broadcasting warnings of a severe thunderstorm . Looks like it will pass north of us, then perhaps it will graze us, then it hits ..

WE ARE TAKING YOUR QUESTIONS!!! Ask us anything you've ever wondered about deciding to quit our jobs to go on a sailing adventure with no prior experience of boats or sailing, how it is to live as a sailing nomad, or anything related to boat life in general. I'll make a video to answer one question at a time. I've already received some questions about seasickness, sleep, and even beauty routines.... This will be SO fun, and I'm really looking forward to get started on those topics.  This week, we are adjusting to living onboard our sailboat, which is the exact reason why this episode comes so late. As we are adjusting, we find ourselves stretched when it comes to time, and are learning to slow down. Already when we moved in on the boat, I largely overestimated Polar Seal’s storage space. I packed in several bags my entire wardrobe, happily thinking that I would make it work. I did not make it work, and took half of my wardrobe back to the locker where we keep the stuff that we cannot take with us on the boat. Ryan was sewing behind me, as I was trying to record this episode, and I ended up kicking him out of the boat so that I could work. Right? I needed SPACE. That one thing that we don’t really have anymore… Or do we? Polar Seal is a Beneteau Oceanis 40, which stands for 40 foot long (12 meters). That’s not even that small of a sailboat, as a lot of cruisers who do the same thing we do live on much smaller boats, down to 32 or 28 foot and sometimes without shower, refrigeration or flushing toilet. I admire people able to live that simply, I don’t think I could do it myself. I give a little tour of our boat, and a “before/after” of our living condition. Our living room has shrunk, but looks nice. Our kitchen has been replaced by a “galley”, which is VERY SMALL. I have to crawl on the floor to get anything out of the fridge, the oven or the kitchen cabinets. My enormous former walk-in closet and the bedroom are probably the two spaces that have shrunken the most. Gosh I miss that walk in closet… Our bedroom is now a cabin, whose ceiling is very low, but the bed is comfy. The space itself isn’t bad at all, onboard our Oceanis 40 from 2007. The real challenge is: proximity. Private space is a rare commodity onboard, and added to the fact that we are still adjusting, makes for some explosive moments between Ryan and I. As we set sails from Rønne in Bornholm to Kiel in German, our departure is delayed by an argument that we work out before leaving. HTFU - Harden The Fuck Up is the lesson the crew got while hiking to the top of Mount Adolphos Island. Mount Adolphus Island is located at the very tip of Cape York Peninsula, far far north Queensland. This area is the scene of many shipwrecks. One that got our interest was The Quetta, a steel steamship of 3,300 tons. 134 people died out of 292 people but there were some amazing survival stories. Watch it and see. In this vlog our sailboat gets moved under the tent and we finish up removing everything prior to painting the deck. We also remove the top skin of fiberglass on deck in six spots to test for moisture in the core.
