From Block Island RI, s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) is sailing across Long Island Sound towards Connecticut, on a nice beam reach in 18 kts of wind. During that sailing trip a vertical batten decided to slide out, and Glen had to rescue it, pushing it back inside the batten pocket and secure it with a prod. In Connecticut, we moored s/v Cloudy Bay in Stonington, where she spent 3 days waiting for hurricane Florence to pass. We aimed for Stonington because we imagined it will be safe and sheltered from the coming winds of Florence. The rather expensive mooring proved to be not so sheltered, as the swell was creeping in and we had two very rolly nights. Needing to escape from the boat, we went on a road trip. During the first two days it was rainy and cold, and we went on a road trip along Connecticut River and the coast. We particularly enjoyed visiting Essex, Mystic, New Haven, New London. On the third day the sun comes out at long last and after we visit the very quaint and quiet Stonington we set off to Fishers Island, where more rain comes upon us. As we start to sail slightly north again we visit one island which does not get many visitors.....leaving it completely unspoiled for those who do make it there. Leaving Antigua behind, we set out on a NW course with the wind and waves at our back as we have a beautiful sunset sail. With no issues overnight we wake to find the volcanic island of Saba towering in front of us, and read up on her history. With very few safe and secure spots to anchor, we pick up a mooring ball on the west side of the island. The next day we take the dingy to Fort Bay where we check in, and then begin making our long hike up to the town of The Bottom, thankfully getting picked up half way between. So when we got back to Starry Horizons after six weeks of traveling around Australia, what did we have waiting for us? You guessed it... MORE work! Our big projects had been completed before we left, but we still needed to get our life raft serviced, give our sail drives some TLC, fix our rope cutters, service our outboard and get a bottom job done. In spite of my best efforts to line up all the work quickly, the weather didn't cooperate so we had to stay in the yard for longer than anticipated. That meant a few extra projects got done, but also that Amy was off presenting at the Women Who Sail conference when the boat got launched. No problem though as our friends Mark and Susan volunteered to come by and help me get Starry Horizons safely back on the water. We're sailing again!!! Thanks for watching! Bluewater SAILING with risks I am happy to report that, although our rudder is broken, it is the good kind of break. It doesn’t mean it will heal itself, we still need to get hauled out, but the damage is not so bad that we can’t have a little fun before repair day. Which is good news, because this week we have the Atkins family from N.Z coming to stay. We have a busy schedule planned, visiting islands in Mamanuca and Yasawa chain of islands on Fiji’s west coast. Disclaimer Our children have grown up in a fairly free-range environment. In this episode they are exposed to the chance of injury. However, it’s all calculated risk. I am happy to report that no child was harmed in the making of this vlog.
