Crossing one of the worlds major oceans is no small feat but Nikau has done it! We left the Canary Islands and traveled south via the Cape Verde islands where we had a great 5 day stopover re-fuelling, re-fooding and enjoying the change of pace and culture in these African islands. Then it was time for the big one, in convoy with four other boats we all left together one Sunday morning to cover the 2000 miles to Barbados. Over 14 days we faced all sorts of conditions, celebrated Christmas, had minor repairs to deal with and generally enjoyed the challenge of ocean voyaging. It was fantastic to arrive in Barbados just in time to celebrate New Years with all of our own little convoy of 5 boats plus another 7 boats we know that left the Canary Islands when we did and did the crossing direct - that's almost 60 people including 40 kids!! We are the Robbins family sailing on our boat named Nikau. We are a family of 5. Our 3 kids are doing NZ correspondence school on board. They are growing to love it! What's not to love about 3 hours of school a day and then a different playground for the afternoon every day! We've traveled from New Zealand to Sardinia in Italy to pick up our boat and we plan over a few seasons to sail her back to New Zealand. We hope you enjoy following us on our adventures! The Salt Spring looks small, but it is an amazing 351 feet deep, to our knowledge to date. Gray fox, gopher tortoises and dolphins call this park and its waters home. Birdwatchers can enjoy sighting Bald Eagles, Roseate Spoonbills, the elusive Black Rail, a Leucistic Red Tailed Hawk (named Lue), as well as other raptors, wading birds, shore birds and migratory songbirds. Although this park protects four miles of pristine coastline along the Gulf of Mexico in western Pasco County, due to the mangroves lining the shoreline we have no beaches or swimming area. Swimming is available outside the park on Durney Key which can be reached by launching your kayak or canoe in the park. Maps are available at the kiosk as well as the concession's office. For the paddling enthusiasts, visitors are welcome to bring their own kayaks or canoes or rent them here at the park. We have three entrances to the park: The main entrance is located on U.S. 19 at 8737 U.S. 19 Port Richey FL 34668 This entrance has restrooms, kayak/canoe launch, boardwalks, hiking trails, picnic area and concessions. Scenic Drive Trail Head at 10333 Scenic Drive, Port Richey which contains a picnic pavilion, tables, informational kiosk and a short hiking trail (corner of Cinema and Scenic). We woke up in the middle of the night to the blaring sounds of people blowing their air horns repeatedly. Sleepy eyed and confused we poked our heads out of the companionway to see what all the commotion was, but could only see glimpses of anchor lights sitting upon the tall masts of fellow cruisers in the anchorage. In the vast darkness surrounding our boat we started to see flashes of light as people were trying to see what was going on. Not too far from our boat we saw a large white boat moving sideways right down the middle of the anchorage! The thing was gigantic and there was no stopping it from crashing into the boats of sleeping sailors downwind of it's destructive path! We quickly jumped into action by getting on our lifejackets and motoring over to it in our dinghy to see if we could help in anyway. We quickly learned that no one was aboard the ghost ship and that it was up to us and the other cruisers in the bay to help save the 67' catamaran before it could do any further damage! The 2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race concluded on 31 December with the final prizegiving held in Hobart, Tasmania. Of the 85 yachts who started the 74th edition, 79 completed the 628-nm race and there were six retirements. Recipients of Rolex timepieces were Alive as overall race winner and Wild Oats XI for line honours. The achievements of all class winners were recognised as were the personal and collective achievements of the sailors and crews in finishing this revered and gruelling offshore race, one which is embodied by a true Corinthian spirit. Rolex has been Title Sponsor of the 628-nm race, organised by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia with the collaboration of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, since 2002.

What happend to the calm and sunny Mediterranean? Why are there big waves and so much wind? Okay... I agree it's no summer anymore but... See us in this episode when we sail from Alicante to Torrevieja to pick up Lena, anchor one night in a sweet water Lake and finally arrive in Aguadulce. We have more wind and wave as we expected, but it's a good training for our upcoming Atlantic crossing.
