This week we have the boatyard back out to the boat to continue with the painting of the coach-house repair. If you recalled a couple of months ago, we had done some repairs to the support wall inside and had the boatyard plane some of the old fiberglass off and then lay new glass up to the coach house wall and onto the roof. Then I put the port in, and we wanted to ensure that the leak had stopped before we had them come back out again and paint. They came out and prepared and painted the first coat on the surface. It needs a second coat yet, but progress is happening for sure. I will also share that I gained a few pounds while off the boat and up here in New Jersey. So, I went back to my 'tried and true' where I am making smoothies and having them as breakfast replacements a couple of times a week. I have a great and simple recipe that is easy to make, and I share it in this weeks episode. Additionally, we go on a tour of a small organic farm where I pick fresh berries for the smoothies. This farm belongs to my aunt and it was cool to go visit it again as I have not been there in about 40 years. Thanks for watching everyone!! On the way we take the last opportunity to clean Nutshell’s hull before we embark on the South Pacific Crossing. Cabo San Lucas is a heaving town, with loud music, party boats and plenty of people. Eco-friendly antifouling Q&A with Capt. Brian and Senor Brady. We sit down and discuss the results of our eco-friendly antifouling experiment. Brian starts off with a little recap of what we did during our haul out in Grenada, and why we made the decision to try and find a paint that did not rely on traditional antifouling agents. We show the results of Delos sitting at 3 weeks, 5 weeks, and 7 weeks without moving, and compare those results to boats around us with hard copper, ablative copper, homemade copper-epoxy, and copper coat. Finally we scrub the bottom clean and start sailing regularly again and show how the effects of water over the hull make a difference in the growth on Delos’s hull. The bronze floor timbers have been a lot of work but it is all paying off. We spend some time prepping everything so that we can finally get to installing these beauties in their places for good! Each faying surface will need treatment before we can place the floors and bolt them down. We also need to figure out the angle for all the through bolts in the stem and stern that are going to hold the floors in those areas. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. After a smooth and calm sail from Montserrat to Nevis (of St Kitts and Nevis) and we head ashore and explore Fort Charles just outside of the capitol of Nevis island, Charleston. Before getting back to the water we papmer Aquarius with some new stuff to try Seal X & Propsead - to try if that works and if it's worth the $. Then we launch Aquarius! She's happy to be back in the water and first we go to Town Basin Marina, which is lovely! Then more fun - Kawau, Wahake iskands, Rongitoto volcano and Auckland! For couple of nights Westhaven marina - the biggest marina in Southern Hemisphere becomes Aquarius home. We say "au revoir' to our friend and begin our journey up north towards Opua, stopping in Marsden bay Marina and finally checking out and leaving beautiful New Zealand for Fiji. Join us! Our water pump died so we find a well on one of the islands to wash up and clean ourselves. The water has a bit of a taste to it but we dont care so I grab a 100 litres so we can live another week or so on the boat. Margarida is spearing more fish and catches us all dinner as well as getting us some coconuts for a treat. We also rig up a slackline.
