After a marginal forecast left the nine strong 44Cup fleet parked at the dock until 1300, the Swedish wind gods came good allowing four races to be held in 8-12 knots on the penultimate day of the 44Cup Marstrand World Championship 2019. This helped the schedule recover following no races yesterday due to a lack of wind. Stand-out performer today was Chris Bake’s Team Aqua, which, much like Hugues Lepic’s Aleph Racing on day one, scored no race worse than a fifth place. Her resounding 2-5-2-1 scoreline has left Bake’s team with a useful eight point advantage going into the final day. Marstrand, Sweden is the third event of the 2019 44Cup which pits the world's top businessmen and the best sailors in the industry compete in high-performance one-design 44-foot carbon racing yachts. In part three of this series I make the stem, transom, chine logs, and sheer clamps for a plywood and cypress, Snipe class, one design sailboat. I show how to make make patterns for the stem and transom, how to laminate the stem, and construct the transom. I also show how to scarf joint lumber to make the long sheer clamps and rough cut the bevels for the keel batten. In this weeks episode, Chazzy and I continue out Grandpa, Granddaughter tour of Chicago. We continue down the Chicago River checking out the cool buildings and bustling city from the peace and serenity of a boat. It is amazing how things look so different from the water than the street. From the river architecture tour, we ride bicycles over to the Navy Pier and enjoy a slow twirl around on the Ferris Wheel there. When the original one was constructed here, it was built just a few feet higher than the Eifel tower in France. After riding on this, Chazzy wanted to go on the twirl swings, and she did. I opted out of that one and chose the bench for observing. :) My business trip in Chicago continued, and I was able to spend time with my coworkers and friends, which is always a great time. We took in a Cubs game from an exciting rooftop vantage point. The next night we went to a neat little gastro pub for drinks and dinner and a bit of trivia. If you are ever in the Chicago area, I would highly recommend the Wild Goose Bar and Grill. It is the kind of place that looks like it would be great to be a regular and can almost hear the chants of "Norm!" like in the show cheers if you were to be a regular there. Lastly, I had a wonderful dinner and conversation with one of my co-workers who has become a friend over the last few years. Then it was back to Florida. We landed at 9:30 AM and went straight to the first property showing and met the realtor there. We looked at a few more homes while I was in town and found a couple we liked. Deb and I learned a bit more about each other's tastes and refined our search just a little bit based on what we are finding in our price range with the features we want. We relax under a stormy sky and the RV awning and enjoy a short time together as a family. Then it is back to New Jersey to be there as my Dad continues his recovery. He continues to progress and improves!!! Don't forget to like and share this video Please check out our other videos as well and click on the playlist below for a couple we think you may enjoy. Exclusive Interview of Nicolas Harvey, President of Prestige Yachts America
Self Defense on Sailboats: defense Against PIRATES, INTRUDERS & THIEVES... Please understand that this video is presenting some ideas about defending yourselves against having Un-Armed thieves and intruders board your boats...BEFORE they board your boat. These are new self defense weapons for sailors to consider having onboard for self defense against piracy. What weapons we want on our boat to use to defend ourselves is considered in this episode. We are not offering this video as advice on what weapons to have or not have on your boat...that is a personal call. This video is simply to introduce some more ideas of what’s available here in South Africa and open up a discussion between cruisers or those contemplating cruising. Everyone must decide for their own boat. Please do not feel we are telling you these are good weapons to use in every case, and may even be dangerous to display. ...they are simply ideas For devices to use in self defense on a sailboat, we do not necessarily use them to defend ourselves. We are well aware that pulling a fake gun or even a real firearm, on someone with a real gun will get YOU killed...as the video explains. This is a discussion about possibilities for warding off theft from mildly threatening intruders...not guys intent on robbing, raping, and killing you, like so many people want to discuss here. To make it clear to people NOT on boats...this is what to ward the guy off who comes on to your lawn...who is MAYBE gonna steal your lawnmower. Are you going to blow him away, or are you gonna maybe shoot a pepperball in his direction? This is what we are talking about in this video...It’s indeed hard to tell intent...and sometimes it’s best to assume the worst, but not hurt someone right away. If they keep coming, it may be best to have a plan B ready to go. We have decided to make our first line of defense, after common sense, locking things up and not displaying them on deck...along with the installation of a super decked out security system onboard Brick House for http://www.GOST.com. Nobody will step onboard without us knowing about it, and alerts being sent to the local officials. Here are 5 cool Ideas to deter an un-armed and not actually dangerous intruder who may decide to board your sailboat. Real Pirates on Sailboats...and real pirate defense..forget it...but opportunistic fisherman who want your cell phone...why let them have it when you can use a deterrent to scare these pirates away? These are perhaps some crazy ideas and methods to defend against pirates and intruders in S. Africa where this was filmed in June, 2019, without having guns on a boat, but they are here to consider as you contemplate weapons on your sailboat. Sailing around the world, a cruiser needs a definite method to send a clear message to an intruder that he is about to step onto the wrong boat. But lethal weapons are often overkill and can turn the boat owner, into a criminal, landing him in a filthy foreign prison! We believe most of these weapons on sailboats are for use at a distance, and once here pirates have boarded the boat,it’s probably time for a plan B to defend yourself, and possibly locking yourself in the cabin to not be murdered. It’s very hard to tell someone’s true intention, and even if they are armed and dangerous, so care must be taken. All cruisers sailing around the world or just sailing their local waters need to decide individually what is right for their own situation for Defense on a sailboat. Here is another video about flares for self Defense, a new kind of weapon on boats. https://youtu.be/lakH18f2_tA Paintball marker for self defense on a sailboat: https://amzn.to/30t6ScL Pepper Gel for self Defense on a sailboat : https://amzn.to/2xLYqZO Bear Spray for Self Defense on a Sailboat: https://amzn.to/2XKtzHC ▬▬ FOLLOW ALONG! ▬▬ ✩ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/SVBrickhouse ✩Our blog: :http://www.WhereIsBrickHouse.com ✩Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/PatrickChildress ✩Tshirts and other: https://www.WhereIsBrickHouse.com/store You can support us in 2 ways: 🍯(Tip Jar) http://whereisbrickhouse.com/tip-jar/ ⏩Start your Amazon shopping here: https://amzn.to/2K9MmuA DISCLAIMER All information, images, statements, and comments are published in good faith and for general information and entertainment purposes only, and we do not make any warranties about the completeness, reliability and accuracy of this information, not for any product or technique displayed. After six days at sea, my sailboat Karl and I are finally reaching the Equator. This magical line that many sailors dream about. When I first fantasized about crossing the equator on my own keels, I surely had a different szenario in mind. Nevertheless, even though I was only on a week long solo passage and not on an ocean crossing, I still had a very magical moment. Also, I had to keep a promise that I had made years ago...maybe you can guess what that might be... There are many steps in the boat building process that some people may not know of or think about when picturing the work being done. Most see the centerline timbers going up. Then the frames, the planks, deck, spars, etc. And Boom you have a boat! However, there are so many more intricate parts that go into the process. One of those that many may not think of in wooden boats is something called stop waters. In this installment we fair up the rabbet to its final shape to accept the garboard plank, instal one more floor up in the bow and drill some holes in our timbers to instal the stop waters. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific. I am sailing Tarka around the world in part to raise money and awareness for coral conservation by supporting the Coral Reef Alliance. TRAILER: BLUEWATER DESTINATIONS EPISODE 6: Bluewater Cruising A film by British Sailor, TV director, and circumnavigator, Michael Briant. From his six-part series. Stream with a SailFlix subscription at... https://www.sailflix.com/bluewater-destinations-ep6-bluewater-cruising Buy / Rent series or individual episodes at... https://vimeo.com/ondemand/bluewaterdestinations Join Michael Briant in the Caribbean aboard his bluewater cruising sailboat, Bambola, a 1980 Moody 36 center cockpit sloop. Michael begins with a brief tour of some of his favorite Caribbean destinations: Rodney Bay, St. Lucia; Luperon, Dominican Republic; English Harbour on the south coast of Antigua; and the mist covered mountains of Martinique. Michael then turns to the question: how difficult is it to do bluewater cruising? His answer is straightforward: anyone with a bit of experience and well constructed, heavy boat can do it. He takes us on a tour of Bambola and shows us the on-deck modifications he's made for safer bluewater voyages. Next he introduces us to an Austrian couple who have been cruising for six years aboard their catamaran, Jolly Swagman. They've sailed from the Baltic, through the Mediterranean, then across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. We tour their vessel and see how they've arranged and modified her over the years. Finally, we return to Bambola. Michael notes that most bluewater cruisers spend 80 percent of their time on anchor and you want your vessel configured to make life as convenient, comfortable and safe as you can. He takes us below for a tour of his cabins and the equipment he's installed for comfortable and safe cruising - especially single sideband radio that connect cruisers around the globe. This leads to a discussion of weather - one of the most important concerns for cruisers. He introduces us to two prominent weather forecasters and routers who many cruisers rely on though single sideband radio contact. Michael concludes his bluewater sailing discussion with the cost of cruising. He gives some weekly cost estimates from his own experience and that of fellow cruisers. This film provides a very information packed 40 minutes for anyone considering heading out there.
We’re loving San Francisco! It’s green and picturesque and the hills are a great workout :) In this episode we also visit the wine districts outside the city and get a baby update! We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat Ran, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter in January 2016. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. We find a wreck, reccy it with the drone and go out for a look and scare the stuffing out of Margarida in the process. Ha, just wait til you see the facial expressions of the toughest girl on earth. Priceless. We snorkel and catch a nice snapper and BBQ it on the beach. Afterwards, Margarida has a go at the drone since she is unhappy with my excellent drone flying skills (feel free to replace excellent with dodgy) and reckons that she can do a better job. Well she does do an excellent job of entertaining us and her drone skills are not too bad either. Bad news hits us as well. We get stripped by the local Congresso (authority of the Guna people) who take us for the remaining cash in our wallet so we have to sail back to civilization to check the bank and hope some funds can be had. Luckily the sailing back was awesome with no breakages. Give it thumbs a up if you liked this episode! We Found THE Boat...THEN WE CRASHED IT! Before we bought it! But at least we surveyed it first... Well, nothing's ever as simple as it should be. Should've been just another survey and sea trial, no risk, no fuss. Until Eric decided to drive a boat he'd never driven before AND try to dock it. Why, you may ask? Well, you'll have to watch to see. Suffice it to say we ended the day in an eventful way. But our sailboat is still mostly intact and we *hopefully* learned a little something from it. Well, actually we learned something we actually tried to TEACH in our very first episode, but hey, we all need reminders. Lol. Enjoy!! And be sure to SUBSCRIBE for WEEKLY CONTENT EVERY FRIDAY! Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose and unfortunately today was the latter for day two of the 44Cup Marstrand World Championship 2019. At the skippers briefing in the morning PRO Peter ‘Luigi’ Reggio kept the crews ashore. The race committee then took to the high seas to the west of Marstrand island to check out the conditions. They kept abreast of the situation, on the hour updating crews and owners with news as they waiting patiently in the 44Cup hospitality area on Marstrand’s quayside. However when there was still no wind at 1530, Reggio pulled the plug on racing for the day.
