Building a cruising sailboat The deck stringers are completed and this allows me to clear a bit of space in the entrance and galley area. After that, the upper parts of the toe rails are fitted. We have t shirts for sale. Details on my website - www.svtapatya.com The SV Tapatya challenge coin is available from; http://www.svseeker.com/wp/product/tapatya-coin/ All proceeds go to the SV Tapatya sail fund Music tracks "Sit and Wonder" and "The Great Divide" available on iTunes, Amazon etc. EP "Shake a Leg" and album "Out of the Moloch" All music from these videos is available from: https://ynotb.bandcamp.com/album/the-sv-tapatya-tracks If you like what you see, leave a tip in the Tips Jar; http://www.svtapatya.com/the-tips-jar.html Follow the build, along with the story of my first cruising adventure (The Miss Molly I Adventures) on my website; http://www.svtapatya.com Support the build, the vlog, the blog and the writing on; https://www.patreon.com/sv_tapatya Or follow me on Instagram for various shots of my boating life; https://www.instagram.com/sv.tapatya This is the story of my building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk-rigged, schooner dory. The boat is constructed of exterior quality plywood, sealed with epooxy and sheathed in glass fibre and epoxy. One of the great beauties of these boats is that the ballast keel is fitted towards the end of the build, enabling the boat to be kept lower in the shed for most of the construction time. The keel and rudder are fitted shortly before launch. Thank you! Tony

We just got all the fiberglass done for the ski locker hatch. Now we have to figure out how we are going to complete the ski locker hardware to lock it to the floor. The ski locker turned out very well and was so strong even though we used two boards. This ski locker hatch has a total of 10 layers of fiberglass and you can't see the seam where the two boards come together. Follow along as we breathe new life into this 2004 Bayliner Bowrider. Yachts from Dufour, like this Dufour 460 Grande Large continue to strike me with their modern innovative layouts. This sailboat is the second largest in the Dufour Grande Large lineup (also, what's with that name...). It got me with the many windows, the fridge as well as the double front cabin, like on the Beneteau 45 we sailed recently. Yanbu is a hidden gem in the Red Sea. Untouched reefs and massive wrecks exploding with marine life, and divers so scarce you'll be lucky if you spot another dive boat nearby. For anybody able to dive here, don't think twice. Do it. Algrean Reef: About 15km off the shore of Yanbu is the amazing Algrean Reef, with mind boggling visibility and incredibly diverse marine life. We could easily see corals and fish beyond 50m+ looking down from the dive boat! Massive school of Barracuda was the highlight of our dive. Ioana Wreck: On June 3rd, 1915, Ioana, on a voyage from Middlesbrough to Montreal with general cargo, was sunk by the German submarine U-19 (Constantin Kolbe). What's left behind is a spectacular wreck with tonnes of marine life. Thousands upon thousands of bright and colourful juvenile fish on the clear blue red sea background makes this a wonderful diving experience.

I normally schedule my annual haulout for the month of September, but a failing through-hull fitting--even though successfully repaired--persisted as a source of anxiety and I wanted to get it replaced sooner than later. So the first task was to figure out how to remove the old through-hull. After consulting fellow cruisers and the experts, I concluded the best method was to cut the outer mushroom flange with an oscillating tool, break off the segments with a hammer and big flathead screwdriver, and then drive the through-hull into the boat. Of course the through-hull was likely held in with 3M 5200, a very powerful adhesive ... UPDATE: I say at the end of the video that there will be ad update in EP4, well we hadn't done enough testing to do it there, but there are regular references to it in later episodes. Here is a written summary: ALTERNATOR UPDATE: For those of you who have watched the 'Uprate your alternator' video I did promise an update on how it performed in this episode. We didn't actually do enough motoring to properly test it however so apologies for not having that in this film. We will give a video update in a future episode, but in the meantime I do have some stats from using the alternator a bit now so will write out what I've found here: Firstly on advice from experienced marine engineers that you get much more longevity by running the alternator at below full capacity I set the 'belt manager' to 3 on the regulator. This means you will not get full capacity out of the alternator but it will be less stressed and last longer. having the belt manager on 3 is supposed to drop the output by 21% and it seems I get about 95 Amps at cruising revs when the batteries are able to accept full charge so that seems about right. There are also some comments on the alternator film that people have experienced Balmar failures due to excessive fan belt dust. I would always do everything possible to avoid creating fan belt dust, that's why lining up pulleys and tensioning the belts properly is important. You need a tensioner on a twin belt system, levering the alternator over and tightening it up won't cut it! In real life use, after a night at anchor I'm typically at 60-70% state of charge on the house bank (580AH AGM) So running the engine to leave the anchorage and raise the sails, usually about 1 hour, gets my state of charge up around 15% so 75-85% This is about right as the internal resistance of the battery goes up to a level where bulk charging is slowed to such an extent that solar is a much better option anyway. A no wind passage where you're motoring for a period of time will easily bring the batteries back to full charge which is good for the batteries. We get enough days like that in the Med. to give the batteries an occasional full charge so we don't have to rely on shore power to do that. Basically then I think the alternator is doing the job it needs to do & I'm happy. I'm still a bit shy of total power for long term voyaging without resorting to the Generator. We only used the Genny once in the last 4 months. But the power I'm short of is more the lower amperage long term charge which for me will probably be more solar. We could go to wind, but I'm very reluctant because of the noise, even the best modern designs are intrusive to some degree. Hydro is also an option, but difficult to fit on a canoe stern. Also reducing power draw is always something to look at. I've done everything possible for the moment I think, but there is one big saving we could make which is to fit wind vain steering at not use the autohelm. This is an attractive option for all the other benefits it brings, but it has the same problems of fitting to a canoe stern and is expensive. If you're interested in the technical aspects of sailing, i've uploaded some maintenance videos of the boat lift to the 'Tech Corner' page of our website... http://www.sailingfairisle.com/tech-c... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Uprating your alternator is high on the list of things to do for a cruising boat. This technical corner is all about choosing, wiring and fitting a larger alternator and external regulator. There's more to consider than you might think. Uprating to a serpentine or double V belt, changing and aligning the pullys. Lots of wiring, alternators work MUCH better with external regulators and you need to be able to program the regulator, standard regulators are shocking when it comes to charging house banks. This video walks you through the whole process. If you like this tech video there are many more in the tech series and we also have lots of tech tips and tricks in the regular episodes so don't miss them.

We spend a week in Thailand preparing for our first big offshore passage since the refit, across the Mallaca Strait to Indonesia! https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we arrive to the island of Phuket in Thailand. Wasting no time, we head straight to land and hire a scooter to begin the daily missions of chasing up everything we need for our next big adventure to Indonesia and the Indian Ocean. We collect the essentials, ranging from surfboards and fishing rods to toilet paper and epoxy! We get our NEW Flexible Solar panel by Solbian Solar panels stitched onto our bimini. Nandji now has a little bit of luxury with 2 fridges installed and we want to maximise the amount of solar energy we can harness installing the new SXX 180 flexible solar panel. These panels are new technology and we are excited to now have over 700 watts of solar on Nandji. To learn more about this product, check out our website. https://www.sailingnandji.com/our-gear.html Keeping busy whilst we wait for the bimini to be completed, we finish off other jobs around Nandji that need to be done. Since leaving the boatyard we have a long list of little jobs that need to be completed to finalise the refit. One of these is to re apply kiwi grip on the new bow, so we spend the afternoon finishing off this project before going out enjoying the fact we are in Thailand after all! It can not be all work without a little play! With all our ducks in a row, we finally sail away from Thailand and out into the Mallaca Strait. Leaving late in the season/change of seasons means we no longer have favourable trade winds and are going to be sailing upwind and bashing to windward to reach our destination. Yet another passage upwind, hopefully the last for a while!! Thank you to everyone who has watched our videos and contributed to our new engine. It is all because of you legends we have been able to install this brand new engine and re-power Nandji. With all this boat work being complete our vessel is becoming indestructible as we get her ready for our next big trip across the Indian Ocean. With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia and finally arrived to the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the next big adventure. The work is now complete and off we go to Thailand on our way to Indonesia. We departed Australia in July 2017 and have since explored some amazing countries, met some beautiful people and experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! Indian Ocean here we come!! The journey towards the Corinth Canal continues! The weather gods are favourable, which means we get to sail downwind for hours. It is one of our longest and most relaxed sails yet. So relaxed even, that Alex suddenly throws his extensive risk calculations over board and decides to climb the mast while doing milk maid; or goose wing or butterfly, well anyway, while the sails are both on different sides of the boat.. And that all just for a picture! Only the BEST BOOK for sailors! NOTE: I guess this video eludes that we have many guests on Aquarius, but over 2.5 years of sailing we had less than 10 people visiting us. Our goal is to circumnavigate the world in 4-5 years so we move fairly “fast” also in some extremely remote locations therefore it’s not so easy for our guests to join us and we don’t have that many friends expressing interest to join us. Since in near future we will be in Thailand we have quite a few family and friends planning to join us and we wanted to share this video and for them to have “fair expectations” and save us time explaining this over and over. This is especially better done this way since when someone joins us they tired after the journey; excited to see turquoise water; already quite overwhelmed with different lifestyle… The last thing you want to do “to sat them down and have a lecture”… meanwhile they already using the resources and getting around. --- --- --- While sailing 7 days from Vanuatu to Papua New Guinea we had no time to edit the videos, but decided to post very needed and necessary video for us - what every guest and crew coming on a boat must know… Sometimes we don’t take the time needed to explain every time WHY we do things the way we do. Although for someone it might seem over the top or redundant… Therefore - this video. Also I’ve got even more urgency to make it after talking to our friend who was about to give up sailing after few unsuccessful cases trying to find a good crew… Hope this helps you understand why certain things on the boat are done certain way… And hope background is not too much of a distraction… Thanks so much for watching 🙏 Stay tuned as next Friday 12PM EST we release a new video 🎥 We do our best to keep you entertained and informed and if you find it fun, enjoyable or informative, consider becoming part of our team and ➡️ join us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/svaquarius ➡️ want to support us, but not sure about long term commitment?
