After seeing how Turkish Gullets are made in a Bozburun boat yard (and seeing where Roman Abramovich had his yacht built!) we sail to Marmaris and traverse the bureaucracy of agents, crew lists and the Turkish blue card scheme aka 'poo cards'. Turkey's 'pump out' scheme is not as easy to follow as we first imagine.. and we break a few rules and we break a few rules - but it doesn't tarnish the friendliness we encounter in Turkey. After waving good buy to our crew - Pete and Alex, we say hello to a special visitor. After exploring Marmaris Bay's various anchorages, and few close encounters with day tripper boats (!) we then visit Marmaris Yacht Marina to pick up some rigging and enjoy a few home comforts! Ksamil Islands are absolutely amazing and not only are we the only boat anchored in the whole area, but every morning/afternoon we had the beach all to ourselves, with the exception of a puppy we found! After an amazing week exploring the islands and swimming everyday, we check out of Sarande heading north to explore some more incredible anchorages along the coast of Albania. Albania coast guard info: To check into Albania you need an agent. We emailed our agent a few nights prior (details in the video) and only needed to call on VHF as we entered into the harbor. We then needed to inform our agent that we were going to Ksamil islands for 3 nights then returning to Sarande. Upon arriving at Ksamil islands and anchoring we received a friendly wave from a coast guard, then when returning to Sarande to leave for the final time we checked out of the port with our agent and informed them of our next port, Durres, but we will be anchoring the whole way up the coast along the way. Although it may seem crazy to sail around the world, once you analyze the various wind patterns and hurricane seasons and with a bit of planning it’s quite reasonable for anyone with a sense of adventure to do the same. There’s lots of ways to sail around the world. If you’re racing, you often use storms in the southern ocean to propel you along. It’s a completely different approach. One that requires serious boats that are built for those conditions. We on the other hand sail around the world by staying more or less in the trade wind belts. This stacks the odds in our favour. Samana Bay entrance is on the Northeast corner of the Dominican Republic and is a huge . bay roughly 23 miles long by 7 miles wide. We opted for another few days at a fancy marina to take use of some decent wifi and to just make things a bit simpler. The marina is pretty fancy and a bit expensive but compared to how much this marina would cost in some populated parts of the states it actually wasn't too bad. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** There's a saying that if a sailor claims to have never run aground, they're either on their first sail or lying. We're certainly not on our first sail, but we've been fortunate that all previous encounters with the sea floor have been with soft mud or sand. That was about to change though, thanks to an uncharted bommie. It was a low speed impact, but still enough to cause some damage to our mini keels. And since there aren't a whole lot of haul out facilities in the Indian Ocean, we chose to do another haul out in Thailand. For the second time in a month... Needless to say, we weren't loving the cruising life at the moment and things got a bit worse before they got better as the yard misplaced one of the supports and caused damage to our hull. Sigh... But the damage wasn't catastrophic and the rest of the haul out was super productive as the mini keels got fixed, our fiberglass repairs were finally done, we added more bottom paint, fixed our emergency escape hatches, got work done on our sail bag, replaced our lazy jacks and gave Starry Horizons a nice wash and wax. Sailing Coco We finally arrive at the mouth of the Corinth Canal after a very eventful journey with people boarding our boat and tying up to shady looking dock! We are greeted by 20+ knot winds….. Which we wish we had all the way up to the Corinth instead of motoring the whole way. We wait outside for the Corinth Canal “people” to give us permission to pass through! 30 mins later we were granted permission and work our way through the canal. We install a new masthead rig to replace the fractional rig on an east coast built Pearson Triton sailboat. The original mast was corroded and damaged and the owner preferred the simplicity and better strength of a masthead rig. The Triton is known for excess weather helm which requires an early first reef in the main when the wind picks up. With the masthead rig the mainsail is smaller to reduce weather helm and because the forestay now goes all the way up the mast the lost sail area on the main is regained and transferred forward to the jib. The old mast was 37' overall and new one is 36'. Z351 mast and hardware was $4,000 from US Spars in Gainesville, FL. Part 2 will cover stepping the mast and installing sta-lok end fittings.

This week I do a little airport Tango and take you to my corporate office near Boston and give just a small glimpse into the company I work for. Many of you have heard me talk about it in the past and the fact that we lived on our boat for 8 years while I worked full time is just more evidence of just what a cool company and culture it is. I get stuck in airport and canceled flight hell but use my best weapon in scenarios like this. Don't get mad, it doesn't do much good. Smile, figure out a plan and move on. So I will share what my plan is and how it all worked out. We also move into our new place and let Swabby share her version of what the house is like. We spend our first night and day enjoying the house like we would had we rented this place for a vacation. It was a great way to get introduced to it. I then share some video I captured of Swabby having a conversation with Alexa. Links & music credits in here: After a long patch of rough weather in the remote islands of the Tuamotus, the supply ship hasn’t docked for weeks and the fishermen have been rained off meanwhile. The presence of ciguatera poisoning riddling most of the fish in the atolls doesn’t help our case. Finding Avalon’s cupboards and bilges have never been more sparse. We sail to a quaint little island called Toau which has a false pass, creating a perfect little anchorage. We pull out the speargun and shoot some rather obscure fish, which we accompany with hand picked fruits that we never knew existed. What a hoot! Thanks for watching guys. We set out on our adventure In search of giant black sea bass on a beautiful fall day. Catalina Island was our destination where rumors among divers will point you to these elusive creatures. Black sea bass are the largest bony fish in California reef communities. Almost fished to extinction but making a comeback they are always a treat to swim with.
