We find the BEST TROPICAL REEF we have ever seen. Squid hunting around us, Manta Rays up close and personal, and a huge variety of vibrant coral. After seeing the Komodo Dragons in the last episode we dive over the side to see what the Komodo National Park has to offer under the water, making the most of being live aboards in Komodo. It starts out a perfect day with not a ripple on the water so I use the opportunity to pretend I have a breakdown and try to steer the boat with the dinghy by myself. Not too hard at all really. The next day it starts to cloud up and I go for a quick spear to get dinner before I get hit...well my timing was a little off and I seek shelter behind an island, albeit the wrong side, that is the windward side. I wasn't going to stop on the sheltered side because that's where the 3 meter croc lives. I just need a spot to lay low and allow the lightning to strike the higher trees while I am lying as low as possible in the water. It all turns out OK even though we appear to have a strike very close by. And our favorite time is upon us once again, that's right people, it's croc watch. Had it not been for the large barge that needed to got up the river to drop stone at a building site we would never have had to pull our stern in out of the river to make room, we would never have been asked to tie on to the small boat by the shore and we would never have had to save them from floating off in to oblivion. With our tail between our legs we sailed south to Makongai, another sanctuary, for Lepers, turtles and Cruising Kiwis. Music Frank Burkitt Band - Rainbow Rose The Nukes - Falling snow Who are we? In 1997, after a disastrous Olympic rowing campaign, Rob decided to row a seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014, we invested in Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Robert's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with our three children, Finn 17, Declan 15 and Ivan 12, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world, meet the locals and record our adventures. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. ***** Never stop wandering, never stop wondering. #TheCruisingKiwis

Im dänischen Nationalarchiv in Kopenhagen wird die Beschreibung eines alten Seeweges durch die Schären wie ein Schatz gehütet. Das von Mönchen handgeschriebene lateinische Dokument ist eine der ältesten und aufregendsten Quellen zur Navigation auf der Ostsee. Es besteht aus einer Auflistung von Orten, die zusammen eine – meist durch die Schären geschützte – Seeroute von Dänemark entlang der Ostseeküste Schwedens über die Ålands und Süd-Finnland bis nach Tallinn bildet. Diese vergessene Segelroute, mein 40 Jahre altes Segelboot LA MER und ein Kajak waren die Zutaten meiner neuen Ostsee-Abenteuerreise durch die Schärengebiete Skandinaviens. Mit dabei waren Kameras und Drohne, um die Reise in einer aufwendig produzierten Dokutainment-Trilogie auf die Leinwand zu bringen. Mit Unterstützung des Dänischen Nationalarchivs und mehrerer Museen konnte ich die Koordinaten des Itinerars in meine modernen Seekarten übertragen. Man kann davon ausgehen, dass die historischen Seewege der Region - so auch die der Wikinger- ebenfalls entlang dieser uralten Segelroute verliefen. So erstehen die Seemannschaft der Wikinger, die Geschichte ihrer Navigation - zu denen ich auch Experten befragte- und ihre vergessene Mythologie in meinen Reiseberichten wieder auf.
