Farewell Lanzarote! The RORC Transatlantic Race gets underway! The 6th edition of the RORC Transatlantic Race got underway on time with the fleet starting from outside Marina Lanzarote at 1100 UTC on Saturday 23 November, 2019. After months of preparation, the international fleet have started one of the most iconic offshore races with a stiff breeze gusting up to 25 knots. After the start, the fleet passed a turning mark at Puerto Calero Marina before leaving Fuerteventura and Tenerife to port and then heading out into the Atlantic Ocean. The first 125nm of the course are both strategic and tactical, with land effects providing both snakes and ladders. The fleet are expected to experience gusty conditions for the first 24 hours, with rain squalls varying both the wind speed and direction. "15-20 knots from north-northwest was a little more than forecast with squally conditions giving even more breeze," commented RORC Race Officer Steve Cole. "The reaching start was without incident and it was great to see the fleet make good headway at the beginning of this long race. Childhood 1 was just 10 seconds shy of the line at the gun, and Pata Negra and Dark Shadow also got away well." The fast reaching start was ideal for Childhood 1, skippered by Bouwe Bekking. The Swedish VO65 was the first yacht to the mark off Puerto Calero Marina and once clear of the wind shadow of the surrounding hills, they hoisted their A3, blasting through La Bocayna, the strait between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Childhood 1 is expected to round Tenerife later tonight. French Wally 100 Dark Shadow, skippered by Yerin Hobson, was just three miles astern. Giles Redpath's British Lombard 46 Pata Negra got off to a good start. Skippered by Andy Lis with a young crew, the team were seven miles behind Dark Shadow, the largest yacht in the fleet. Swiss 47.7 Kali, skippered by Benedikt Clauberg is competing in the RORC Transatlantic Race for the second year in succession. "We have new sails and an experienced crew this year, with six teams members having obtained their Yachtmaster Offshore qualification. Our dual aims are to be safe and fast, and with that in mind we have three modes on board: race, safe and survival - I hope we don't have to go into survival mode but we are prepared for it all the same, including a full man overboard test on the eve of the race," explained Clauberg. This week we are still in Las Vegas, Sin City, and enjoying the Las Vegas Strip and a private concert arranged by the company I work for. Before we get into those details, Comment below, what is your favorite Casino or Show in Las Vegas. We ended up going over to "The Joint" at the Hardrock Casino and rented out the whole place for a private concert. How cool was that, and I learned that OneRepublic's lead singer had written songs for Beyonce, Adele, and even Timberland? Last weeks Video - https://youtu.be/riF7Re0iQYs After the concert, I continued the business end of my trip, and then walked the stip, visited the Bellagio and the Chocolate Fountains, and enjoyed an Aladin style art display. I also take you to my absolute favorite bar in Las Vegas, the Chandelier in the Cosmopolitan Hotel and Casino. The bar is three stories and draped in crystal, like the fanciest of lighting accessories. When we get back to Florida, the little one and I go looking for and find fossilized Shark Teeth on the beach near Venice Beach, Florida. In the next few days, we made our outdoor living a bit more casual by adding a Television, and I spend some time re-spooling and maintaining my Penn spinning reel. Let us say I learned something, and in an upcoming video, I will show the PROPER way to maintain a fishing reel and how to re-string it correctly. We had to get this $100 Pressure Washer and Review its claim of 3000 PSI putting it to the test cleaning our filthy driveway. In this video, we clean the driveway, sidewalk, rock work on the house, and the garage windows. There were years of mold and dirt buildup on all of it and wasp nest up in the windows. Like we said there was, but it is all gone now. We do like an HOA because it will keep your neighbor in check, but when they put some focus on you, well it sometimes sucks. We knew we had to work on our curb appeal a bit, not like we want to keep up with the Jones, but forced to. So if you have a similar situation to ours, or you really want to clean something, this power washer is for you. The 3000 PSI is great, really kicks a when you start spraying, and the foam blast, that will be in our next video, is really awesome. I built this system about 15 years ago. At the time the first consumer grade cyclone dust collectors had only just arrived on the market. The website I used for all the information required to build this system: http://billpentz.com/woodworking/cyclone/cyclone_plan.cfm I can't find any info on where I bought my airfoil impeller. It was a small manufacturer in Ontario Canada. You can do the sleuth work to figure out who it might have been. The trouble with making a Gulf Stream crossing when there isn't any wind is that you forfeit a sailboat's greatest strength and safety feature - it's ability to sail. It sounds like a no-brainer to only attempt a crossing like this when there is favorable wind but weather windows seldom work around your specific schedule, needs, and circumstance. In this case we decided to motor across the Gulf Stream from West End because we had a full day of very calm conditions that we could use for the crossing. If we were to wait for suitable wind to cross, that would mean that we would have to wait 5 days for a front to blow through. Trouble with that option is the total lack of good anchorages anywhere around West End. Typically, motoring is something that sailboats must do from time to time. We'd rather sail, of course, but often times just GETTING THERE makes more sense than waiting on the weather for days on end. So off went motoring across the Gulf Stream current. 10 miles across we started to notice the temperature gauge creeping higher and higher. Multiple times we shut off the engine and attempted to clear out the water intake filter and lines, thinking that we had a blockage somewhere in the system. When that didn't work, I figured that the impeller must be the culprit - which still seemed unusual because the impeller had less than 20 hours on it since replacing it. I opened up the water pump housing and it was immediately obvious that the impeller was to blame for our overheating problems. 3 of the 6 blades were destroyed and the water pump housing itself was quite hot. So I went to work replacing the impeller as we drifted North at a rate of 3 knots per hour. The replacement was a simple task thanks to me having gained good practice in replacing impellers through my strict engine service regimen. Within 15 minutes we had the old impeller out, the new impeller in, and we were underway once again. By the way, Molly did a great job of running the camera while Tambi kept the boat under control and while I replaced the broken engine impeller. Thanks Molly! The whole experience was more scary than dangerous. It's a weird feeling knowing that you are drifting away in the Gulf Stream current and working against the clock - especially while you are still in the diagnostic stages of the repair. This is yet another example of why it's so important to have a thorough supply of spare engine parts on hand to handle minor emergencies such as this. Impeller replaced, we motored along to our first ICW anchorage since departing to the Bahamas over 6 months ago - Manatee Pocket. From the desk of the Deputy Race Director, Neville Rose. It’s going to be very tight finish in the 2019 Latitude Ocean Race. All yachts turned at the designated Latitude within 39 minutes of each other. Unlike any other ocean race where the bigger/faster yachts finish first, the Latitude Ocean Race has all yachts finishing around the same time, if they sail to their handicaps. After 7 months of training, this is also the final event for the 2019 ORCV Beyond the Bay Course participants, who have gained skills in navigation, transition the heads, sea survival, radio and expedition planning. Each practical exercise like today's race is performed with ORCV mentors onboard. It's great that the fleet are enjoying beautiful conditions as they head back to Port Phillip Heads a few knots faster than they headed their designated Latitude. Wind is around 20 knots aft of abeam. Giddy up!

In this extra episode we show you how to service a winch. The model we are doing the service on is a Lewmar ST50 but the principle is the same for most winches. On this service we found that two of the three roller bearings had fractured and needed to be replaced. Normal operation did not identify the problem, only when the winch was stripped down did the problem come to light! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you found it informative or entertaining please give it a thumbs as it helps get YouTube to promote it outside of the existing subscribers. Following Simon Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/finding_simon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/findingsimon Website: http://simonstiles.com/ Asking Simon - Who are you? I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

SUBSCRIBE for WEEKLY SAILING videos! This week we sail to and explore the beautiful and old city of Nafplion or Nafplio in the eastern part of the Peloponnese. There is this awesome fortress called the Palamidi and we have to climb over a 1000 steps in the blistering heat to get there, but it is worth it. The view is magnificent and the place is a little magical. And extremely well preserved. Feels a bit like going back in time, making history come alive! Greece has so much interesting history and ancient sites and buildings that can't really be found anywhere else. Join us for an exploring adventure on land this time and also, the history lesson! So if you like history, this one is for you! - Greece is too old to die. *MERCH* well, just nice shirts. Six months ago we started our journey in Greece with little sailing experience, figuring things out as we go, not really knowing what we're doing. Our goal is to circumnavigate the world via the wind, always being surrounded by the ocean. Sailboat life is super different from land life and can be pretty rough at times. see the little things is the documentary of our endeavour of simplifying life, decelerating pace, and practicing mindfulness. Follow our adventures when you are curious to see how we mess up and fix it up again! We are currently still sailing Greece, but will head over to Italy and beyond soon. If you have any COMMENTS, suggestion, questions or feel to need to praise (or scold) us, leave a comment down below and we’d happily write you back :).
