SAiling Fiji's Bay of Islands Sunshine, Squalls and Dragging Anchor - Lau Islands , Fiji We continue to explore Fiji's Northern Lau group of islands. This week we wave goodbye to Daliconi village, having been gifted a lovely pair of breadfruit ;-) and spend time anchored in the 'Bay of Islands'. We enjoy beautiful sunny days, and go out exploring on the paddleboards. Dave the dinghy takes us further afield , and we tootle around the many hidden bays and lagoons. The weather takes a turn for the worse and after a squally night with winds gusting from 6 knots to over 37 knots, we drag our anchor. Very scary, but lesson learned. We take a short sail around the headland to Bavatu Harbour, where we set our stern anchor to enable us to settle into a tight little cove at the head of the bay. Just stunning . We're leaving the Bahamas using the Gulf Stream to make speed northbound. This is our last sail on the amazing Bahamas shallow banks as we're preparing for the passage north to Beaufort and the Chesapeake Bay. For the first time we're going to sail right up the Gulf Stream and hope to use the current to add to our speed. We catch a large Mahi-Mahi, bake bread, and set up the sails for fast downwind passaging with the current pushing us up to 11 knots. When we pull in to Beaufort North Carolina we demonstrate using the current and wind to help get out of the dock in a tight situation. We decide to try jigging for the first time and came away with quite the prize for our efforts!! This week's episode follows us on what starts out as a typical travel day down the coast of Norway...route planning, destination information and weather forecast. But as we near our destination for the night, we thought we'd give jigging a try. It's when you drop a line and hook into about 100 ft of water and occasionally jerk the line to give it movement. Along the way we shared our experiences with family and friends via YouTube, and by happenstance created one of the first sailing channels. But more than anything, we realized what an incredible experience that first trip was and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with kids. OUR BOAT is a Ferrari red Outremer 51 performance cruising catamaran. We chose this boat as it has been specifically designed for the purpose of bluewater sailing. It was designed and built to withstand the stress of sailing multiple times around the world safely and in comfort. It's also a speed demon, which is important when you want to cover large distances of water before the weather changes. Lastly, it's backed by the manufacturer with outstanding customer service and aftermarket support, so we believe she will hold her value well. And, she's nice on the eyes too. OUR ROUTE has taken us from the Boston/Cape Cod area of the United States down to the Caribbean and then on to the Panama Canal. At the time of posting this we are dealing with a repair in the South Pacific, and in 2020 we hope to be in New Zealand and Southeast Asia. By 2021 we will be in the Med and close to completing our circumnavigation. Unfortunately John and I received the news that batman is indeed coming down a horrible journey of bone marrow cancer. We do not want him to live out the rest of his life in pain so we have decided to give him all the extra loving this week and find a place to rest his body.
