Storm Chaos in the Marina! Saving a Shredded Sail & Mast 🌩️⛵ After a month-long break, we're back in full swing—and the adventure starts with a stormy twist! The marina was hit by a powerful storm, and the Genoa on the sailboat beside us wasn’t secured tightly enough. As the wind picked up, the sail unfurled, shredding in the brutal gusts and putting the entire mast at risk. Max dashed out in the storm to help our neighbor, braving the high winds and lashing rain to try and save the mast and the sail. It was a heart-pounding reminder of the unpredictable power of life at sea. But it’s not all about storms and sails! We made new friends this week with Fabio and Angelica, a warm-hearted couple from Brindisi who run the local laundromat. They welcomed us like family, taking us on a personal tour of Brindisi, sharing the city’s rich history, and treating us to an amazing dinner with the best meat plate we’ve ever had! As we explored more of Brindisi, we crossed paths with fellow sailors Andrea and Camilla, who are on an epic journey back to Italy after nearly a year at sea, sailing all the way to the Caribbean and back. Hearing their stories and experiences was so inspiring—proof that there’s a whole community of adventurous souls out here. At the end of the week, Max had to head back to Milan for work, leaving Barbara and Vlad (our fearless cat) on the boat alone. And, as if on cue, another storm hit—this one packing 40-knot winds and fierce lightning. With Max away, Barbara had to face the full force of the storm, doing everything she could to keep the boat safe and secure. Will she manage it on her own? Ciguatera fish poisoning is caused by eating fish that have accumulated toxins produced by microscopic algae called Gambierdiscus. These toxins build up in older and larger predator reef fish such as barracuda, grouper, hogfish, jacks and snapper, as they consume the smaller herbivorous reef fish that have eaten the algae throughout their life. If a person eats a fish that contains a high quantity of ciga-toxins. They will experience a myriad of symptoms within 6-24hrs. This usually includes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and neurological issues like tingling, muscle weakness, joint pain or temperature reversal (hot things feel cold and vice versa). There is no specific cure, but the symptoms can be treated. And with time, a healthy diet, and eating no fish or seafood that could contain even a small amount of the ciga-toxin seems to be the best. The worst of the symptoms usually go away in a couple days, and all the symptoms are usually completely gone within a month. But this depends on the dose a person receives, and the individual them self. Currently, the toxin is undetectable by any means short of sending that fish into a laboratory. Meaning, you cannot smell it, a microscope just see it, you can't feel it, and there are no identifiable bio-markers in fish with it. The toxin does not affect the fish, but does harm humans & other mammals by attacking their nervous system. Gambierdiscus micro-algae only grows on coral in tropical regions. This is seen around the world, where symptoms can slightly vary depending on what region you get it in. Because of the different types of toxins that are produced by different species of Gambierdiscus. . . If you have any more information on this topic. Up wind, against waves and current, we tried to go the wrong way. When you do that things will break! In this video we sail from Colombia to Aruba. After three days of contrary winds, we finally have a fair weather window into Brest France. Tim and I again cross the English Channel and enter the Chenal du Four with the tide.
