Woke up feeling a bit… neutral. Not sad, not excited. Just flat. Then I got a message: “Make this the best day ever.” At first I almost rolled my eyes. The boat was moving, wind was up, waves were messy. It had all the potential to be one of those long days. But instead of overthinking it, I put music on. Went outside. And just started singing. Loud. It was absolutely not good. But it was fun. And something shifted. The wind was still strong. The waves were still there. The boat was still throwing me around a bit. None of that changed. What changed was my attitude. I decided to enjoy it instead of endure it. To laugh instead of complain. To move with it instead of fight it. And somehow, a day that could have been heavy turned into the best one of the trip so far. Note to self: sometimes you have to create the mood you’re waiting for. 🌊🎶 ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey toward one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology. Today I had the first real problems. The kind that force you to stop, think, troubleshoot, and take responsibility. And it reminded me of something. I’m not out here because this is easy. It’s not. I’m here because it’s challenging. Because it demands something from me. There’s no one else to blame. No one else to fix it. It’s just me and whatever the ocean decides to throw at me. But that’s also where the growth is. Every time something goes wrong and I stay calm. Every time I figure it out instead of spiraling. Every time I choose action over frustration. That’s where I change. I think we sometimes forget that we don’t grow when everything runs smoothly. We grow when we’re uncomfortable and we decide to keep going anyway. Day 9 reminded me of that. Still learning. Still adapting. Still moving south. ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey towards one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology. Hi and welcome aboard @SailingAstridTheWombat We are Gav and Shezz and two and a half years ago we bought our Beneteau Oceanis 430 sailboat with absolutely no sailing experience and jumped straight into the deep end of liveaboard sailing. Our very first passage was just over 700 nautical miles, launching us headfirst into the world of bluewater cruising, learning to sail, and real life at sea. Since that moment, we’ve been fully immersed in boat life, documenting the journey of turning a production cruising sailboat into a capable, self-sufficient home as we prepare for full-time liveaboard life. From major sailboat upgrades and off-grid power systems to everyday maintenance and skills building, we’re learning what it truly takes to own, sail, and live on a boat while working toward our goal of sailing around the world. If you’re into sailing adventures, beginner sailing, sailboat ownership, cruising lifestyle, and traveling the world by sailboat, our journey is all about real-time learning, ocean freedom, and building the confidence to chase long-term world cruising under sail. In this episode of our liveaboard sailing journey, we continue our adventure at Moreton Island after sailing across the bay and anchoring near the famous sandhills. What looked like an ordinary anchorage turns into something incredible as the tide drops, revealing a stunning sand bar in the middle of the bay. This is the magic of cruising sailboat life — constantly changing landscapes, remote locations, and wildlife encounters you simply can’t experience on land. As full-time liveaboard sailors preparing for sailing around the world, these are the moments that remind us why we chose life on a sailboat. At low tide, we head off the boat to explore the sand bar, wading through crystal-clear shallows surrounded by untouched nature. Before long, we’re sharing the water with sea turtles and stingrays, gliding effortlessly over the sand beneath us. Encounters like this are what make off-grid sailing life and bluewater cruising so special. This episode captures the true essence of boat life — freedom, nature, and discovering hidden places that only sailors can reach. From anchoring in beautiful locations to exploring tidal sandbanks and swimming in remote waters, this is the lifestyle that draws so many people to liveaboard sailing and world travel by sailboat. It’s not just about passages and destinations; it’s about the unexpected wildlife, the shifting tides, and the adventure waiting just off the stern. If you’re interested in sailing adventures, beginner sailing, sailboat ownership, or dreaming of traveling the world by boat, this episode shows the incredible experiences that come with the cruising lifestyle. We share the reality of living aboard, learning as we go, and turning everyday anchorages into unforgettable experiences. Chapters 00:00 Introduction 01:25 Turtle 01:55 Exploring a Sandbank 05:14 Another Turtle 06:20 Stingray 08:01 Walking the Tender 10:05 Back on the Sailboat 10:38 Beers on the Sandhills 10:01 Solar Battery Check 14:20 Stingrays and Turtles 16:26 Back to the Tender 16:49 Cockpit Lights 18:56 Tender Up For The Night Please leave a comment, like and subscribe to follow our journey. Join us now as we settle into liveaboard life and get our boat ready to take off and sail around the world. As new sailors we want to share all of our learnings and keep it real in our videos. We want to show step by step what it takes to choose a boat, buy the boat and learn how to sail. Our sailing learning curve is steep so come along with us as we learn and grow as liveaboard sailors. We promise you will have a laugh! Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. I spent the last year in California. in this video I show some of the methodology used to organize a mooring field. After the season ended I worked on selling some art in wintertime, then I was hired to help move a 42ft sailboat from San Diego to Oxnard. San Diego is my home town (although I rarely stay there for more than a few months a year) so this was a longer stay than I would usually do.

This week, American Sailor co-host Whitney Kent sits down with US Sailing colleague and friend Betsy Allison. Betsy has worked at US Sailing for nearly two decades, currently leading the Adult Sailing department. She is a five time Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year winner and has dominated an array of different boat classes throughout her professional career. Betsy coached the most successful Paralympic sailing team of all time. In an ironic turn of events for the Hall of Fame racer, Betsy became a para athlete in 2022 after a battle with cancer. Shortly after her recovery, she was standing on top of the podium in the Netherlands at the 2023 Sailing World Championships with a gold medal around her neck.

Interview with a Captain Franco Cronje to discuss a pattern we’ve both observed in the industry: when rotational command isn’t fully aligned, crew churn quietly increases. During our conversation, we broke down the real issue — and more importantly, the solution: Alignment before rotation. Shared command philosophy. Structured handovers. One operational voice — even with two captains. Wishing everyone working at sea strong bridges, cohesive teams, and true unity onboard. #yachtcaptain #spinnakermagazine #interview #poscast #yachting

Piccoli spazi, grandi soddisfazioni. When you learn to work with your prop instead of fighting it, the marina stops being stressful and starts making sense. It’s not about power. It’s about technique. Not speed—control. Tight spaces. 2026 trips are open. Sicily, Croatia, BVI, Canaries, and more. DM me or link in bio 👆 "What even is sailing, do you just watch the sea all day?" No. Our sailing weeks are: wake up in a new bay, jump off the side for a morning swim, sail to the next island, anchor somewhere tourists can't drive to, explore a 1,000-year-old medieval town in the afternoon, have sundowners on deck watching the sunset, cook dinner together, repeat. It's paddleboarding in crystal water. Hiking up to a fortress. Walking narrow cobblestone streets. Finding a local spot for lunch. Night swimming under the stars. Meeting people from 8 different countries who are all doing the exact same thing you are. You're not "watching the sea." You're living on it and exploring from it. And honestly? That's why people come back every year.

Kaiken keskellä on tehtävä päätöksiä.
