After more than 1000 nautical miles across the Indian Ocean, we finally arrived in the Seychelles — waking up to towering green mountains after months of sailing through the low coral atolls of the Maldives and Chagos. But as every cruiser knows… days don’t always go to plan. Before we could properly explore the island, our generator decided to cause some trouble, forcing a quick repair and a reminder that flexibility is part of life at sea. Meanwhile, Finn had his own adventure ahead when he joined a local sport fishing tournament, heading out before midnight to see what the Indian Ocean had in store. Emirates Team New Zealand's AC75 Taihoro rolled out at Wynyard Point in Auckland for the first time ahead of AC38, and the recon teams were on the ground to capture the detail. Training was cancelled after a tropical front moved in, but not before the boat was observed on its high-cradle. Chief Designer Dan Bernasconi confirmed the team have "taken weight out of the foils" — and the most visible sign is a significant reduction in the forward-protruding fairing previously nicknamed the 'foil spike' in Barcelona. Also spotted: Pitot tubes on the foil bulb for the first time, measuring precise speed through the water rather than over ground — critical for flight control and performance data in tidal conditions. With teams mandated to reuse foil arms from AC37, the differences between campaigns will be in the detail. The recon teams are watching closely. She was also originally ordered with a teak cockpit floor and an upgraded fridge/freezer setup. In this episode, I sail through a 36 mph (31 knot) gust on a high-altitude (8,601 ft) Rocky Mountain lake in central Colorado. My small and lightweight (1,100 lbs) Precision 18 sailboat is not really designed for sailing in this kind of wind, but she sailed through it pretty well. I've made several modifications and upgrades to the boat to include adding a second reef to the mainsail, adding a hanked-on #4 (80%) severe weather jib to my sail inventory, adding additional blocks to the factory outhaul setup to flatten the mainsail, and a 4:1 backstay tensioner to add mast bend and flatten the top third of the mainsail. It's also taken a couple of years for me to build the skills for sailing in this much wind. At my mountain lake, 25 to 30 knot gusts are an almost daily occurrence throughout the summer sailing season. To further reduce heeling in the Precision 18, you can also raise the centerboard all the way up and just sail on the shoal draft keel which is a NACA foil (I did not do this for this sail) or you can add additional crew weight on the rail.
