The amazing underwater caves of Rocky Dundas were a fun stop. But we did miss out on low tide so it was a very wavy exploration which was still worth it. Next followed another perfect sail in the Exumas to our anchorage at Pipe Cay. We finished the day with on our 5 Star Sailboat restaurant with the fresh catch of the day. This was filmed mid-March 2020. If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up! #sailing #rockydundas #bahamas ***************************************** Help the videos stay alive by becoming a patron, donating or becoming a YouTube Member. Now that we have installed the short beams around the deckhouse opening, it's time to start fairing that out. These beams have all been milled a bit oversized for this purpose. This means we start by fairing the ends of the short beams down to the carlin to prepare for the sill plate and then continue fairing the rest of the deck from there. While Alix is working on this, Steve continues to work on the Oak rootstock hanging knees that are going into Arabella. These pieces that we harvested about a year ago are turning into some beautiful structural art and we couldn't be happier about them! As 2020 comes to a close we are all looking back on a very challenging year and all of us here at Acorn to Arabella are very thankful for the community that has grown around us and helps us to put out these videos. We sincerely hope everyone is doing well, enjoying the holidays and that these videos get to provide a bit of a distraction and enjoyment this holiday season. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Intro Illustrations by Scott Ouderkirk from Glass Goat (The Wooden Boat Experience) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCu02y4RfEyiHqjTCaYpeq4w If you are interesting in supporting/helping here are a few ways: Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg Recurring support via Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Original Soundtrack available at benfundis.bandcamp.com FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com
Building A Bowsprit! The design was in place, the white oak was ready, and Nick was excited start his woodworking journey and begin building a bowsprit. The reason for building it was detailed in last week’s episode. We wanted a bigger anchor, and it didn’t fit our existing setup so, Nick designed this gorgeous new bowsprit for Ixion. With our How To: Woodworking guru also known as Nick's father, Nick was ready to dive in headfirst building this. We are all excited for the final result! We did not know how to build a bowsprit when this all began, instead it was made from scratch. Truly it was the most fulfilling creative project Nick has done to date on Ixion! Hope you all enjoy. Thank you all for watching. Don’t forget to subscribe, comment, and share! This week Steve became a hair stylist and trimmed Karen’s hair. Karen did some more exercising. We tried some sailing in very low winds. A holiday greeting. And of course, danced. Karen is so opposite of Karen videos it's not even funny. Thank you subscribers! About us: We sail, fish (haha), dance, fly the drone, sometimes wear bikinis, DIY, ride the motorcycle, listen to great music, and enjoy life. Having fun on a Catalina 42. Its important to foresee where you will be at, in the time ahead, and what you may need to have those human comforts and options we all strive to have. I design a new rooftop camper to use on my next adventure along with another sailboat to investigate some beautiful aquatic scenery. Anything worth doing is worth doing right. It's always a great day to plan the next adventure and I am always "Ready for action" here at the Zacharias P Lobisch Art and Adventure channel! Enjoy.

All of our sailboat repair and maintenance blogs are now hosted on our dedicated maintenance channel, MOTHERSHIP MAINTENANCE Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/c/mothershipmaintenance Amel Super Maramu's have many electric winches and furlers and after 20+ years of service, ours needed some serious attention. A nasty crunching sound emanating from the manual/emergency furler in the main mast meant we had to drop anchor on a sail up the east coast of Spain to take a look. After detaching it from the electric furler and foil I dismantled it to find a broken tapered bearing and some sorry looking oil/lip seals. I eventually pieced together the service kit below and ordered one each from the UK companies (also listed below) at a cost of around £50 each. Luckily we had some ex-pat friends living close by who we could have the spare parts sent to and I managed to fix things back together while on anchor before *eventually* continuing to the Balearics! The repair to the aluminum extruded foil in this maintenance blog failed about a year later and was repaired using a more robust method found in a later video about fixing the internal foil in the main mast of an Amel Supermaramu: https://youtu.be/zZdVHsuhWCc Thanks to the contributors to the Amel forum for their advice and for the swift and friendly customer service from: https://simplybearings.co.uk/ https://www.qualitybearingsonline.com Service Kit Bearings (ID x OD x Width): 1 x 32009 Tapered Roller Bearing; 45mm x 75mm x 20mm 1 x 6005 Ball Bearing; 25mm x 47mm x 12mm Oil/Lip Seals (ID x OD x Width): 1 x Oil Seal; 45mm X 60mm X 7mm 1 x Oil Seal; 25mm X 33mm X 6mm 1 x Oil Seal; 30mm x 40mm x 7mm V-Ring Seal: 1 x V-Ring Shaft Seal VA-045; For Shaft Diameter 43mm-48mm; ID 40mm; OD 50mm; Width 9mm O-Rings (Cross Section x ID): 1 x O-Ring 2mm x 94mm 1 x O-Ring 1.5mm x 62mm ____________________ PLEASE NOTE: YouTube have disabled comments on most of our video blogs (and on other family channels) due to safeguarding issues regarding minors on the YouTube platform. Last year, at about this time of year as well, some blood, sweat and maybe tears were shed in retrieving some large White Oak rootstock from the woods and painstakingly carving out some knees from them. This was a miserable yet rewarding experience that is now paying dividends. Steve is finally getting to the fruits of his labor and getting to instal some beautiful White Oak knees in Arabella, and boy are they beautiful! Thank you all for watching and supporting!

Visit my site to get the How-To Guide and see what model of heater I have: https://CatamaranFreedom.com/Dieselheater In this video, I will show you how I did to control my Chinese diesel heater over the internet. It's fairly simple once you understand a few basic stuff. This can be used for Catamarans, Sailboat, Vans, or almost anything you want. The guide is fairly rough so I'm expecting some questions and from that, I will improve the video and the article.
Join us as we attempt our very own DIY installation of a 'cheap' Chinese diesel heater into our 1980's sailing boat, which has never had any form of heating aboard. See how we get on, having never done anything like this before. THIS IS NOT A HOW TO VIDEO, it's just a how we did it video, as always. 😁 ***************** Handy Links For Our Chinese Diesel Heater Installation ***************** 1) This is the heater we bought: https://amzn.to/2Zss5IF 2) We also bought lots of upgrades for the Chinese heater system, to make it more appropriate for a sailing boat installation, from a local company called MV Heating, which you can find here: https://mvheating.co.uk (they were super helpful). 3) Exhaust brackets came from a company called: https://www.britishpipeclamps.co.uk (they were a tad slow getting them to us, but when they did turn up, they seem like really good quality). So Captain Carly got very ill recently, she came down with pneumonia and we can't help think that living on a cold, damp sailing boat, in the middle of a British winter, likely had some part to play in that. So this is our mission, to warm the boat up and make this space a comfortable and cosy little home once again. This is NOT a how tho video, this is simply a how we did it video and we will show you what modifications we made to make it (what we believe is) a suitable and safe diesel heater installation for our sailing boat.
Building a Bowsprit! After purchasing an anchor last season that was too big for our small Catalina 30, the only solution was to begin building a new bowsprit. Once we learned more about sailing, we learned that our anchor was under sized, especially since we planned on being on the hook most of the time. But the new anchor roller didn't fit, so we decided to add another problem to our seemingly never ending list and build a bowsprit to fit the new anchor. Wood working isn't our forte, but design is. Nick started with a custom design before consulting our how to: woodworking for dummies guru, his father. With this project, we are nearing the end of the first year of refits on our little electric sailboat. Only a few more projects to go before we begin our sail south to Florida. Let’s hang out…where is the wind? Went out, waited for enough air to raise the sails on our Catalina 42. Wind never happened so we just hung out for a while. Motored back to our slip. Decided to do maintenance. Filled water tanks which hold 115 gallons total. Steve took the 2.5 pound aluminum propane tank into town for more fuel. Bought a $20.00 cutting board and custom fitted it to the stove stop by sanding. Ended the day by doing some comfort food cooking on the Seaward Princess gimbled stove. It was a very relaxing, peaceful weekend. Thank you subscribers! We are preparing the sailboat for upcoming adventures, and that requires a lot of DIY boat work. In this case, we do a lot of boat plumbing work to deal with liveaboard water needs. Our projects include finally building a system to allow us to take hot showers, replacement of the entire marine head system with a waterless composting head, and adding a small element of safety with functioning bilge pumps in each hull. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We can't produce quality inspirational content indefinitely without the support of our fans. We went to Lelystad to haul out of the water for some planned maintenance. This work was originally planned for April/May but Corona virus restrictions delayed us until July. The planned work was: replace seacocks under the waterline replace the hoses for the fresh water system replace the sanitary hoses for the heads replace the seawater inlet hose for the engine cooling fix paint damage on the outside of the hull and paint sections of the inside of the hull However when we hauled the boat we discovered blisters just under the waterline. Very strange on a steel boat. These turned out to be sections of the hull that were not properly prepared when MMD was sandblasted and primed 3 years earlier. So we needed to sand these back to steel, reprime, and refair before we could reapply Coppercoat. This added 2 weeks to our scheduled haul out. So we spent the month of July in Lelystad on the hard. Additionally the mixing elbow from the engine was replaced with a new one made of stainless steel by Stam Metaal of Lelystad. Moving the boat from our home port of Schokkerstrand to Lelystad, I was helped by our friend Taras. We encountered some fairly high winds of 25+ knots on the nose in the Ijsselmeer. Since the Ijsselmeer is only 4 meters deep, this can bring on some rough conditions. A severe chop with a very short interval. After arriving in Lelystad we encountered a 25+ knot gust crosswind as we were docking Make My Day. You can see the results in the video. Luckily paint work above the waterline was already on the schedule. Our haul out was done at Deko Marine in Lelystad. A good yard for haul out work. Very helpful people and fair prices. Great facilities and a good restaurant on site. Music by Troy and Paula Haag and Solitary Zebra. Enjoy the chaos.😳😊

We , like many others around the world are trapped aboard our sailing boats due to the global pandemic, its our home, we don't have a house or a country that we call home, our home is the floating steel plates lovingly welded together and painted that keep us afloat. Our country is where we are right now, that small deserted island or busy town quay is where we walk, where we shop and where we rest, we don't need any more than a small patch of sand to set our anchor. we are trying to make the best of a bad thing, we have compiled a list of work to get done on the boat to stop us from going just a little crazy, we aren't allowed to sail or to leave this concrete dock and Christmas is looming. A different video this time. A video about the first time Saetta bankrupted us due to keel issues (whatever that means). This was back in 2017 when we were living in Edinburgh and were in the process of moving to Amsterdam. Anyway, tens of thousands of pounds later, the boat was fixed... or so I thought! Ahoy! We are Miguel and Saskia. In July 2020 we left Amsterdam aboard Saetta, a 1983 Moody 41, to see more from the world. We plan to cross the Atlantic Ocean around December 2020. This is a must do if you cruise to the Bahamas. Island hopping the Exumas was a big highlight of our sailing adventure even without an engine. We did a stop at Norman's Cay to dive a drug smuggling plane wreck which was a unique experience. The Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park was well worth our other stop. We jumped into @sailingvinyasa 's dinghy for a 2-mile journey through crystal clear mangroves. If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up! #sailing #exumas #sailingbahamas ***************************************** Help the videos stay alive by becoming a patron, donating or becoming a YouTube Member. There is a lot of time consuming but rewarding work in boat building. Cutting carlin joints to instal short beams is a good task to show how much time some of the jobs can take. Each side of Arabella's cabin had 11 short beams to be installed (after having already installed the midship ones with the knees). This meant 22 joints to cut into the carlins and 22 short beams to fit into them. Next we had the lodging knees which need to fit tightly against the deck beam on one side and the short beam on the other. With that all done, it's time to sand it all smooth, seal them and varnish them before instal. Again, rewarding, but time consuming! Thank you all for watching and supporting!

Life at The Dock! It has changed drastically in that last year we never thought we would end up living on a sailboat running a small business, let alone even have Ixion. Our day to day is still foreign to us, and we are still getting used to a life of sailing and making sailing videos. In the midst of filming another episode, we thought it would be fun to film the things we normally don't show you. To give you just a little hint into our life as a couple who make youtube videos, and to see more of us personally. So often what you see is us doing projects, but not this time. You get us, in all our silliness. We hope you enjoy this special episode that steps outside our normal story and trajectory and you get to know us just a little bit better.
