After a few years of studying and working hard we decided it was time to make a change. We needed a change that would allow us to spend more time together, give us a better work/life balance, and the freedom to travel. While we still had time on our side, we wanted to use it to live rather than use it to chase money. Learning to sail was the answer. In December 2021 we moved onboard Te Tāiko, a Chico40, and since then we have been so fortunate to explore many of New Zealand’s pest free islands and its beautiful anchorages. With our love of travel and adventure, this lifestyle has enabled us to experience so much more than we could ever have imagined. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. In the meantime, follow along with us as we navigate this new lifestyle whilst sharpening our skills exploring New Zealand waters. #boatlife #boat #travelvlog #digitalnomad #lifestyle #sailing #travel

It's a big moment here in the Acorn to Arabella boathouse. We have been steadily working on closing up the hull and now the oak shutters are going in. After these are installed, we will only have six more planks to go. Two cedar strakes will lead up to the final black locust sheer strakes. Right now though, we are reveling in the sight of a closed up hull inside the boat. It is amazing what a difference closing that gap makes visually. Thank you to everyone watching and supporting, and to all our friends who came to help with these special installations. And of course, a big thank you to Carolyn who has worked so hard these last couple months and who we really hope to be able to get back here soon! #volvopenta #perkinsprima #Amelyacht #powertools #DIY #sailing #sailinglife #sail #yacht #boat #sailboat #boatlife #boating #sailingboat #boats #sailingyacht #boatrepair #boatmaintenance #injectors #marinediesel There was a few jobs to do on our Volvo Penta TMD-22 marine diesel in Gran Canaria before crossing the Atlantic and one of those jobs was to pull the injectors and test them because we found a leak on injector number three. In the three and a half years we've had the boat we've never actually had the injectors inspected so it's seemed like a good opportunity to remove them and have a look. As you know i'm always up for a bit of DIY but this particular job was a little bit above my pay grade and i've got no facilities for testing injectors anyway. So i decided to call in a mechanic and film the process. Although these videos show maintenance work on a TMD22 / Perkins Prima marine diesel engine, many components and assembly techniques are similar across the Volvo Penta range, including: MD22L; MD22P; MD22L-B; MD22P-B; TMD22-B; TMD22P-C; TAMD22P-B; HS25A; HS25A-B; 120S-E; MS2A-E; MS2L-E; MS2B-L; TMD22B And just to clear up any confusion, Amel engines go through a c drive so the 'back' of the engine in most boats is the 'front' of the engine in an Amel. The trickiest part of jobs such as this is getting to the component part that you want and this was no exception. We had quite a few things to remove out the way before we could actually pull the injectors. The injectors then went off to the Bosch testing centre. It turned out that all of the injector sprays were fine but one injector was out of clearance and was leaking more fuel than normal back into the return line. For this reason it was recommended to have it replaced i the next inspection i another 1500 hours. And then it was just a matter of putting everything back on the way that it came off which from experience is never a straightforward job and this was no exception because as soo as it was all back together, number three was leaking compression. So there was no getting around it we had to take injector 3 out which meant removing all of those tubes again but it was a good opportunity to remind myself of the procedure i guess! So after giving the hole and injector another good clean and scrape it was re-installed and this time - no leak! So that was it and all that was left was the bill - which came to 363 euros. The hourly rate in Europe usually ranges from 20 euros an hour to 45 an hour so 50 euros an hour came as a bit of a shock. But at least i've got the confidence now to do the job myself next time. If you're a professional, expert or even an old salty sea dog with some good advice on removing and replacing injectors on sailboat marine diesel engines, then please leave any constructive criticism, insight and advice in the comments below the videos. Porsche 3.2 Carrera Engine Installation - Porsche Carrera Rebuild #PorscheRebuild #PorscheRestoration #PorscheCosts Porsche Restoration Porsche project Porsche ownership costs Hi Everyone, Well, This is it! The final cost of the entire project and all historical costs. Let us know if you think we are crazy or if it makes sense. If you are wondering about the heater motors in the front kick panels: Here is a link: https://www.autohausaz.com/pn/0130007081 You will have to move one of the connector pins around - just follow what your original motor looks like. I looked at the one from Porsche and it is exactly the same - you would have to move the pin on that one too... Just remove that kick-panel and work the motor out. You'll need to transfer over the fan and such, but it isn't difficult. Just be careful with the hoses connected to it. They can be a bit hard and brittle. Hi Guys, In this vlog I renovated my bathroom and I'm so happy with the results!! It was only meant to be a temporary renovation but I'm so pleased with how it came out I think it will be staying like that for a while. I also included some cruising footage and some of the dogs, they were behaving for once! I hope you enjoy the vlog, let me know what you think in the comments below! See you next week. Kayleigh I'm Kayleigh and along with my two dogs Hugo and Coco we will full time on board our 37ft narrowboat Grayswood. After living nearly two years in our self-converted campervan we decided we needed more space. So we decided to purchase a boat after spending some time on our friend’s narrowboat. Grayswood was conveniently located less that 5 minutes from my work and was found kind of by accident. I was visiting a friend who was staying in Aston Marina and whilst we were out walking the dogs, I seen the advert for Grayswood. I said to my friend “that looks a nice boat” and as I said it the marina manager appeared and asked if we would like a look inside. Naturally we did. After looking inside the boat, we made an offer after going back for a second viewing, after some negotiations within a week she was ours pending a survey. She was hauled out the following week and the survey went well. We kept her out on the hard standing for a further six weeks whilst we renovated the insides including fitting a new kitchen and bathroom. Subscribe and welcome aboard - follow us on our narrowboat journey, where I will show what its really like living and navigating the English waterways as a solo female. New video released every Monday. Instagram - @liveaboard_lifestyle
This week we head into the beautiful Shelter bay marina to finally install our Hydrovane, and a few other maintenance jobs that one has to do owning a boat. In the 30 + heat we put piece by piece together and Kieran drills several hols in Merewether, not a task he enjoys. We stumble across an issue, if we put in the Hydrovane we won't be able to open one of our outside lockers in the back... Kieran figures it all out of course, the problem solver that he is! Here's how you can get the clutch pedal pressure back by bleeding air out of your slave cylinder. Unlike brakes, most hydraulic clutches have no bleeder screw to get the air out, so you'll have to do some wrenching to get the air out. There may be a possibility of restoring some pressure on the road if you add more hydraulic fluid and remove the slave cylinder, which is only two bolts. You can then review the slave cylinder part at the beginning of the video. In case the steps in this video don't work for you because your s!%t is too broken, or if you simply want a new master/slave clutch kit, scroll down for the link. When you have little or no clutch pressure and you just had to grid gears to get your jeep home, all may not be lost. There is a way to bleed air out of the clutch restoring pedal pressure getting you back on the road. In this video we go over how we fixed this issue, not a hard fix, you just want to make sure to mount the slave cylinder piston rod correctly so it pushes the clutch fork. Travel is about experiencing culture, right? At least that's how we feel. This episode opens with our friends on @svdelos gently bumping into us when their anchor drags in Lake Boca. Its just another day in anchor life and the situation is quickly rectified. Next Bill works on installing a new hydro-shield fin for our Yahama which will help our dinghy get up on a plane faster. After installing it he does some maintenance and changes the lower unit oil before heading out to the ocean for a test drive with our buddy Matt of @MJSailing . It makes a HUGE difference and we are stoked about the added performance :) As the weekend approaches the party-goers move in and our quiet anchorage turns into a loud and busy one absolutely stuffed with motor boats. The party begins by noon on Friday and though it clears out every evening, it starts up like clockwork every day. On Saturday our buddies from @svdelos come over along with Brian's family who's local to the area plus his other brother Brady who's flown in for the week. We decide to join the Boca Bash and take a pretty entertaining dinghy ride through the anchorage on Maggie. At Calico Skies we're all about experiencing the local culture on our travels and South Florida is no exception to that! ~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Enjoying our channel? In this video, Hauling Out and Going Home - Last Video? Are We Done Cruising?, We haul Balachandra out of the water by travel lift at Green Cove Springs. The Travel lift is small so they ask us to back in and remove the backstay. (not so easy to do in 26 knots of wind!) There is no room for us in the work yard so we are forced to move Balachandra into the long term storage area where we are not permitted live or do work on the boat. We didn't realize that the storage yard closed at 4 pm and is not open on Sundays so we had to make a mad rush to offload our things into the truck and get out before they locked the gate! We set out by truck for Nova Scotia Canada and cross the Canadian border. Months back we made a chance connection with some Canadian engineers in the R&D stages of developing a new type of solar panel for sailors and cruisers and recently we did an interview and they asked us to share their survey with the cruising community to help them understand and communicate with the cruising demograhic. Please scroll down for links to the survey and complete one. In August of 2017 we sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat. After 2 fridgid Canadian winters in the North Atlantic we untied the lines and headed south to cruise in the Caribbean for another 2 years, exploring as far as Grenada. Sailing Balachandra is our YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos, La Vagabonde, Sailing Uma and Project Atticus, we document the sailing adventures of myself (Dan) and my partner Nawal as we navigate the globe. The mizzen mast has been tandem project as the planking has progressed. Alix chipped away at it between other important tasks, and now it's finally finished! Of course, the hounds and hardware need to be installed, but this big, beautiful, repurposed piece of Victoria's past and Arabella's future is shaped and painted. It will get stashed out of the way in the boathouse for when the time comes to work on the rigging. Right as we were wrapping this important project, we had a fan come out to volunteer his time and talent. Greg was not only a huge help with some shop work, but as a filmmaker, picked up the camera a bit, offering us a different perspective of the project. We had a chat about the philosophies and ideas about this project. We hope you enjoy this episode. Thank you for watching, subscribing and supporting! See you next Friday! *News* Ben’s found something that will finally make it possible for us to have closed captioning again for those who need it. Accessibility is important to us, and we appreciate everyone’s patience with this. We should be able to roll this out soon. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This is the best feeling and this is also why we got a sailboat! At last we are living the cruising life once again. We get off the sailboat and go explore St. Augustine, the oldest city in the United States by foot. The architecture is breathtaking and the summer weather beautiful and warm. Ordinary and extraordinary maintenance activities can be performed on board without disassembling the stabilizer. This is possible for two reasons. The first is that all the critical components that need extraordinary maintenance do not operate in a vacuum-sealed enclosure and are located in easily inspectable positions. The second is the lack of a water cooling system which requires regular care and makes the maintenance activities more critical. Paolo Paolini, Chief Technical Officer.

#SailboatRepair #AmelSailboat #InMastFurler #BoatDIY #YachtRepair #BoatFix #amelyacht #boatrepair #boatmaintenance #furler #inmastfurler #Amelyacht #sailingboat #boatrepair This one will be familiar to most Amel Super Maramu owners - it's the bolt that attaches the base of the main mast foil to the in-mast furling system. Over time the bolt that attaches the foil to the in-mast furler mechanism wears an elongated hole in the foil itself and sometimes actually cracks the foil and breaks the base off. So this maintenance video shows how I repair that fault and reinforce that area. About a year ago you might have seen that when we're in denier on the east coast of Spain I had a problem with the manual fuller. At the time I noticed some hole 'creep' in the foil where the the bolt goes through. Over time the bolt had been grinding itself out a little elongated hole. So I thought I'd check it again a year later and the polyester filler that i put in had all cracked away. I kind of suspected that would happen because i had no actual binder at the time and the temporary fix was just too brittle. So I didn't think an epoxy repair by itself would actually cut it anymore so what I did was drop the foil a little and cut off the end with an angle grinder and re-drilled the hole. But this time I put in an aluminium sleeve and filled around it with a polyester resin containing fibreglass pieces. Then i fitted the foil retainer back onto the manual furler. The furler has four delrin spacers that fit between the outside of the mast and the actual manual furler itself, so the bolts have to fit through the mast through the spacers and into the manual furler. This is a much easier job with two people because somebody can hold the furlers in place while somebody puts the little delrin bushes in bolts it all in place. If you want to see how the whole thing fits together and works then check out the manual furler repair blog that i did before. If you're a professional, expert or even an old salty sea dog with some good advice on in-mast furler repairs on sailboats, then please leave any constructive criticism, insight and advice in the comments below the videos. In this episode I've copied an organisation idea from Saillife channel. I also make a start on a washboard to keep the rain out. This is using some marine ply and a scrap piece of perspex. This was a practice run for more permanent parts of the boat. I have never done any of this before and wanted to test and practice first. I soon learnt that it was a good idea. It's not the smoothest job. I also make a template to get a quote on some stainless steel backing for the forestay. I noticed the wooden backing was wet and rotted. Seeing as I have some highly skilled metal workers at the boat yard it would be stupid not to use them. I was hoping to have more time editing and making the video itself but again I got pressed for time and my skill level on iMovie is not there yet. I hope you still enjoy the video and don't forget to click like and subscribe! Happy watching ! Log 18 | After 4 days of very strong easterly winds and hiding out in an anchorage in Fort Pierce, Florida, we sailed Sea Pearl down to West Palm Beach. It was a bit rocky but it was a beautiful sunny day and we saw a pod of dolphins along the way! Once in West Palm, we did a little exploring around Peanut Island and Ed had a go at filming a DIY about "how to tighten a forestay via the furling drum." Fuel issues plagued us the entire trip down the east cost; from ICW mile 0 in Norfolk Va to mile 1048 where we sit today in Boca Raton, Florida. Our friend Brian from SV Delos has come over to help us solve this issue once and for all Bill and Brian remove the tank from the boat and cut an inspection port to facilitate cleaning. Unsurprisingly the tank has algae and debris in it. What did come as a surprise was another issue, a “smoking gun”, restricting fuel flow regardless of the state of the filter. Watch the video to find out what it was! 🤪 With the tank cleaned and reinstalled its time to get down to some more routine maintenance. We noticed that the bilge was cycling more frequently and suspect the stuffing box. We empty the port sail locker to access the stuffing box. We make the necessary adjustments to the packing nut allowing 2-3 drops per minute while the shaft is spinning ensuring adequate lubrication. Another cold front rolls through bringing with it strong winds. We notice that we have dragged a little bit and decide to reanchor the boat. People often as what do we do to fill our time and this one aspect of life on the hook! 0:00 Intro 0:55 Recap 2:08 The "smoking gun" causing our fuel issues all this time! 2:47 Quick errand meeting Billy & Sierra from Tula's Endless Summer 3:37 Let's wrap this fuel tank project up! 6:38 Fixing our heating duct 8:05 Adjusting the stuffing box 11:20 Dragging anchor in a cold front 12:55 reseting the hook 16:48 Cheers to 10,000 subscribers!!! -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Enjoying our channel? In this video, No One Is Aboard?! Unmanned and Adrift Sailboat in Distress, we sight a sailing vessel at the edge of the gulf stream with a continuously flogging genoa so we investigate to discover no one is at the helm. After repeated attempts to hail them from close range with shouts and horn blasts we determine that the vessel is unoccupied. After notifying the USCG and continuing towards Jacksonville we learn the full story of the unmanned vessel. We arrive in Jacksonville and tackle the challenge of passing under the Buckman Bridge with a clearance of 65' with our 65' mast! #vesselindistress #mayday #lostatsea #sailingchannel #sailinggear We're so excited to announce our BRAND NEW YouTube channel, SAILING GEAR, dedicated to introducing and testing new, used, and forgotten sailing equipment. The gaps in Arabella's planking are getting much smaller... and soon they will be no more. We are pushing hard to close up the hull with Carolyn's help before she moves on. The shutter planks are a pretty exciting part of the build. There are only two of them, and they need to be perfect as they will have to be a driven in to fit on the first try. In a way, this means there are tighter tolerances than we've had to deal with for previously installed planks. No straps for edge setting, and not a lot of room for error. Simultaneously, we're doing small, but mightily important, tasks to set ourselves up for the next big things—most notably, the main mast build and the lamination of the cabin house sides. The coming weeks are going to be pretty exciting as we close up the planking and put the finishes on the mizzen mast! Thank you for watching! This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interesting in supporting/helping here are a few ways: Acorn to Arabella wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg Recurring support via Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Original Soundtrack available at benfundis.bandcamp.com FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com
