In this episode we continue the installation of our marine air conditioner. We get right down to it, drilling a sea water exit hole in the hull. Typically this hole would be placed right at the waterline but we opt to install it near deck level since we are completing this install on the hook. Our hull is also balsa cored so we have to be extra careful to properly epoxy and seal the core when adding any new through hulls. As part of this install we have decided to upgrade our inverter/charger to a 3000w Victron. There is nothing wrong with our old inverter but it's output was modified sine waves as opposed to pure and we have noticed a couple appliances aren't working with this "dirty power". As an added benefit the new model is larger with surge rating of 6kw, we are optimistic we will be able to get the air conditioner started at anchor without the aid of a soft start🤞. Next up is getting the duct work installed. There are "marine" ducting kits available but they also carry the marine price 🙃. We opted to take a more diy approach modifying household grates and creating our own transition box. With everything hooked up we finally get to test the installation. Will it be able to start off the inverter? The weather our here in western Massachusetts has been a bit wacky. Though colder days pushed off the possibility of gluing early in the season, we're now dealing with really hot days and thunderstorms—but that's not slowing us down as we scoot along planking on the port side of Arabella. The sheer strake is of locust, which is a strong, durable and very rot-resistant wood that will be perfect for the task of protecting a place on the boat guaranteed to see a lot of wear and tear when docking and boarding or disembarking. . Meanwhile, volunteers George, Tyler, and Neil work on cleaning up all the surfaces inside the hull in preparation for the next steps. They spent hours cutting back bolts and putting acorn nuts on them, sanding things smooth, and hopefully getting to oiling, though, that may wait till next week. What's the first step in fixing a keel after running aground? Our keel is cracked, which is commonly referred to as a Catalina smile. When we ran aground, it goes worse. So, time for the diy project masters to get it done. Catalina had a design flaw in the late seventies and eighties, they put wood in the keel stub. The results lead to a smile like feature at the front of the keel. With our running aground, it's more like the joker now. This sail turned from calm seas to all hands on deck. Cruising during hurricane season in Florida means we experience many squalls. Sailing up the St. John's River in Jacksonville was scary as lightning strikes were surrounding our small sailboat. That's when having a tall mast is not the most calming. Filmed early July 2020. It had also been over 2000 miles since the timing belt was last changed so we thought we'd get that done too. Normally I'm up for a bit of DIY as you know, but because the marinas are so expensive in that part of the world i didn't want to be sat on the dock for weeks on end while i tried to figure out how to do the job and to source parts. So Torsten the engineer from Yacht Concept Majorca came on board and agreed to be filmed and talk me through the job as well. Although these videos show maintenance work on a TMD22 / Perkins Prima marine diesel engine, many components and assembly techniques are similar across the Volvo Penta range, including: MD22L; MD22P; MD22L-B; MD22P-B; TMD22-B; TMD22P-C; TAMD22P-B; HS25A; HS25A-B; 120S-E; MS2A-E; MS2L-E; MS2B-L; TMD22B And just to clear up any confusion, Amel engines go through a c drive so the 'back' of the engine in most boats is the 'front' of the engine in an Amel. As the timing belt was getting changed we thought we'd do the alternator belts too.. and also get the pulleys, tensioners and the water pump checked, and it was a good job we did because there were a few nasty surprise hidden behind the cover plate which meant replacing those parts too. All in all the wallet took a nasty hit on this occasion, not only on the parts but marina fees too! Thanks to Peter Kukloc from 'Yacht Concept' and Torsten who kindly let us film him and bombard him with questions while he worked. How to fix the low-pressure issue on a sink Reverse Osmosis System when it takes forever to get a glass of water. Be careful when doing this you don't want to destroy the blatter in your Reverse Osmosis Tank. If you are using an air compressor like us, keep the pressure down and go slow, you don't want to damage the tank. Speaking to going slow, we took our time, we added air till the flow was similar to that of when we installed the system. With the tap open as we add air pressure to the reverse osmosis tank, we are less likely to cause any damage. Even if we added a little too much pressure to the system, the water would bleed out of the reverse osmosis tank going back to the city water pressure. In our video we show you how we fixed our system, we are not saying this will work for your reverse osmosis system. This episode I heat form and install the cast acrylic windows in the boat. First, it takes a lot of work to lead up to it, including fixing the 3d printer and upgrading my Lowrider CNC machine to cut full 4x8 sheets. I even share a cool trick I learned from @MikePatey, one of my favorite channels.

Getting the nib-ends of these full-length planks fitted into the rabbet fore and aft is one of the hardest tasks of planking Arabella. Since we don't have any wiggle room to move fore or aft, the cuts need to be dead-on for the planks to sit correctly. Additionally, since shutter planks are sandwiched by planks above and below, the lack of space makes it difficult to observe all around the piece being worked. Here we get a great look at what it takes for Steve and Carolyn do these final fits, and then Steve works on switching how we support Arabella with our friends Pete and Kourtney (Accidental Sailor Girl here on YouTube) so that we can remove temporary bracing from areas where we'll be fitting sheer strakes. Simultaneously, volunteers George, Tyler, and Neil come to scrape, sand, and clean the interior of the hull for things to come. Lots going on at the moment! The engines are usually Volvo penta tmd-22s / Perkins Prima marine diesel engine, but many components and assembly techniques are similar across the Volvo Penta range, including: MD22L; MD22P; MD22L-B; MD22P-B; TMD22-B; TMD22P-C; TAMD22P-B; HS25A; HS25A-B; 120S-E; MS2A-E; MS2L-E; MS2B-L; TMD22B They're normally reliable and robust but like any engines they've got their known issues and the past couple of years we've had a slow leak losing about 750 millilitres of oil every 100 hours. Under normal circumstances that's not a problem you can just keep topping it up which is what most Volvo owners do. Luckily I had this particular problem diagnosed from a mechanic friend - Jaques - who replaced our turbo and elbow when we were in Malta. He was 90% sure it was the crankshaft seal inside the bell housing which is really difficult to get to but it's quite an easy swap out if you can get in there. As keen as i am to do most of the boat maintenance myself that particular job i just felt was above my pay grade really. So we were in Majorca and i'd been talking to a couple of other Amel owners who recommended Yacht Concept in Majorca. Not all mechanics that we met in the Mediterranean are willing to be filmed or even speak English so i was particularly grateful to Torsten, one of the firm's mechanics for letting me film it all and ask loads of awkward questions and basically help out. So as the transmission had to be decoupled to get to the seal there was a few other jobs we could do while it was apart. One of those jobs was replacing the Vetus coupling bushings in the Vetus coupling transmission and also the transmission cooler unit bolted onto the side of the Hirth gearbox. We also had all of the belts and the pulleys and even the water pump changed as well but that was in a different maintenance blog. If you've been following our blogs you know that we we rarely spend any time in mariners apart from wintering so this job was quite a chunk out of our monthly budget as we had to pay some extra mooring fees as the job went over a weekend and into the following week. But at least we came away knowing that the engine's had a very deep service and we'd replaced some things that have been kind of on the list for a long time. There's a lot of debate on the Amel forums about engine alignment after such jobs like this but we felt that the risk of actually taking the Vetus coupling housing off and realigning it all, there was a risk that we would damage the actual housing and because we hadn't changed the engine mounts and the fact that the bushings didn't show any sign of misalignment, we thought we just put everything back as we found it. And that was it job done. It was more expensive than we thought and it took longer than we expected but that's boat jobs for you! So in the next maintenance blog I'll be showing how we replaced all of the belts the pulleys and the water pump. Refitting is almost done and I even had time for a DIY project and PARTY with my friends at Caraibe Marine. In this episode, I'm showing you how I made my new switch panel for the big spreader light project. Caraibe Marine invited me to their private party and also gave me a big surprise. In this episode we travel back in time to Ragdoll's DIY galley renovation! When we bought Ragdoll, her galley was at the end of her life - it needed replacing, badly! The damaged, rotten, leaking and stained worktop was well.. ripped out and we embarked on a project to create a new, high gloss fibre glass worktop! The grey gelcoat we used has modernised the boat, gave it a new sleek and clean look and is much easier to maintain and repair. The project is not yet complete as we still need to build and fit a backsplash (all to come in a future episode!) but nonetheless, it worked a treat and the difference is well... Have a look! Who are we? We are a family of three with three dogs, sailing the coasts of Scotland, exploring one island at a time – for now! There is no set route or plan. We will go where the wind and life take us. We have two golden retrievers and a bernese mountain dog – Hachi, Luna and Meems who sail with us. How to change the manual transmission oil, flush the old oil, and get fresh gear oil in. The need for gear oil changes is even more important if you drive your car, truck, SUV, Jeep offroad. Even when your gearbox seals are brand new, mud can sneak in, when hot and cold meet, it suckage "Contracts sucking in Cold Mud". Afterward, your oil might resemble Chocolate Milk, not good for the handshaker "gearbox". When you are ready to put the gear oil back in, you realize that oil cannot defy gravity and pour upward. A sterndrive pump we use on our boat to change gear oil solved the challenge of adding oil. Using the pump makes this doable, you will pump a lot, but it works better than some of the other videos I have seen. Once the old was changed guess what the testing was, if you say trailing you are right, the jeep was out for the night with our son's friends. It seems muddy gear oil isn't the best lubricant for the jeep, according to our son shifting is a dream. We did change the old oil again, not as muddy as the first time, after driving for a month with the new oil. Our son has sworn off mudding after changing the manual transmission oil and gears oil on both the front and rear. No, he hasn't stopped trailing, of course not, he now drives around the mud holes. He knows that after mudding his dad "Chris Does What" will have his grease and check his jeep.
