Wharram 35' Catamaran.Sailing down Pittwater Jan 2011 spinnaker run with Mardi (still in pyjamas) and Alan. We are basically lazy and will often just use the spinnaker to travel down wind. It is the quickest and easiest sail to set for these little trips we often do.

John Call started sailing Snipes in the 40's at the Wawasee Yacht Club in northern Indiana. The Snipe was the boat of choice at the club and he started crewing for his dad. Growing up around Snipes John decided to try his hand at building them. During his Snipe building career he built roughly 100 Snipes in 1968-1971. After an ever-growing bottom line cost he wasn't able to turn a profit and decided on a career change to be an architect. John talks about fleets pushing each other to be the best and yet living up to the legendary sportsmanship of the Snipe. That's serious sailing and serious fun.

Linda Tillman grew up sailing Snipes at Diamond Lake. She sailed with a girlfriend and one of the best parts about that was beating the guys. You get the idea that Linda is competitive. Linda liked that the Snipe Class was a friendly Class and that everyone sailed with integrity. The established Snipers set the example. Now it's Linda and Dick's turn to be the examples for new people coming into the Class. She's still excited to be out in the Snipe because it is such a team effort. You sit close together and you need to coordinate your movements to make sure the boat is going its fastest. She says when you get a lift, the boat just soars -- with such a great smile on her face.

Every other year, the best Women Snipers gather for the Women's World Championship. In 2010 that was St. Petersburg, Florida in November and the temperature was a balmy 80º. Out on the water the competition was even hotter. With competitors from Europe, North & South America and Japan, this group of sailors showed just how tight one design racing can be at the top level. Going into the last race, only 3 points separated the top three boats. It doesn't get a lot more competitive than that. It took a stellar final day for Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year Anna Tunnicliffe and her crew Molly Vandemoer to take the Championship with a win in the final race. Trixy and Yuyu Agusti from Argentina came in second with Kathleen Tock and crew Kate Sheahan just two points back of them in third. There's definitely a trend in the Snipe Class. Young sailors are finding there's a lot of competition to be had in this boat that turns 80 this year. Those younger sailors are showing up on the podium a lot.
