The other week the Narrowboat Noob crew (me and mum!) were in Wales for a week in a holiday cottage in Talsarnau. These are some of our adventures. There's no narrowboats in this video so feel free to skip it if it's not your thing - join me for my Monday video, back on the boat as normal for some serious DIY! Before you ask why I didn't go away on the boat, this cottage had been booked from before I bought the boat, plus I love Wales and there's not a lot of it you can explore by canal sadly!
She always wanted to climb the mast and the perfect opportunity presented itself when the headsail halyard became wrapped around the furler. I, being one who does not enjoy heights as much as some, was thrilled to assist her in ascending aforementioned mast in order to unwrap the aforementioned halyard. What a great wifey! After that we start preparing the boat to be hauled out of the water. In this episode we sail from Mörtö Bunsön to the beautiful Finnskär. There wasn't a great deal of sailing involved getting there but when we got there we knew it was a special place just south of Bullerön. Volvo have had three tries with three lift-outs to fix the broken D2-75 engine in our one year old Garcia Exploration 45 - Snow Gum. First the coupling sheared one of its six bolts. Then the gearbox was replaced. Then the coupling sheared all six of its bolts, immediately after being put back in the water and once again limping from the boat lift back to the pontoon. The noises coming from the engine and drive train just get louder with each repair attempt. Now Volvo expect us to waste more of our lives waiting for them to remove the engine, replace a couple of parts and reinstall the engine, so we can wait for it to break again. Nope - if the engine has to come out, I will be pushing for a new one. Well, I might ask that the Mechanical Diesel Interface (MDI) black box from the old engine should be transferred to the new engine. The original MDI failed in May 21 (leaving us and Snow Gum caught in a full gale in the Irish Sea - a story for another day) and its replacement seems to be a good’n. I suspect that it was the intermittent, progressive failure of the MDI that caused all of the trouble we’re having. It can’t do an engine drive train any good to have random stop and start messages being sent to it while at high revs and high loads. No wonder the drive train keeps failing. Please let us know what you think in the comments. I’d like to hand the boat over to new owners with an engine that can be trusted.
In this video edit I explain the routing choices we made, good and bad. I also talked about a few of the shortcomings from the popular and easy to use predictwind software for cruisers. We were faced with an unusual situation as the Azores anticyclone was divided in 2. The weather forecasting models advised us to go north of the low pressure. This is what the racing boats in the transquadra ocean race did. They had a fast but very tiring passage and most of the boats broke a lot of gear. We tried to get to Cape Verde to get the tradewinds, following the classic cruising route but ended up stuck in the eastern part of the anticyclone for 2 days before eventually reaching the north easterly trades. One thing we learned along the way is how to use the swell to our advantage. In this episode after our troubles getting into the marina, James and I finally get settled and dock in the famous Bert Jabin marina in Annapolis Philippa discusses the issue of trying to get into dock spaces because of the wooden posts and risking pulling the stanchions out if the fenders are left on. We turn the boat upside down more than once getting essential maintenance and repairs done. We discuss how great B&G have been as they gave us some replacement parts whilst not under warranty, we give thanks to B&G.. James looks at the wiring diagrams More boat jobs means, another upside-down boat. We get a taster of the weather in Annapolis and realise just how changeable the weather is We meet Keith – Bert Jabin’s treasure, dock Master in chief W fuel up Another storm sets in as we wonder why we are the only yacht anchored outside back creek?!..... Freshwater storage is the most 💧 important 💧 thing 💧 on a sailboat (when you don't have a water maker). We freaked when the leaky water pump dumped ALL our water into the bilge, and now we're going broke spending $10/day on water bottles from the store! Join us on our quest to solve the water crisis and explore the amazing island of Carriacou. **LINKS** 🌴 Palm Tree Vybez: [https://www.youtube.com/c/PalmTreeVybez] 🌎 Mr. Grill International: [https://www.instagram.com/mrgrillinternational/] 👉 DOWNLOAD Michal's New Book: [https://thebumsonaboat.com/the-art-of-becoming/] ❤️ Enjoyed this video?
