Saba Rock is a tiny resort built literally on a rock in the waters of North Sound in Virgin Gorda, BVI's. We took the Spencer Ambrose Jalousie Beach Break when our ship (Jewel of the Sea) was in port in St Lucia. Most folks took a land and sea tour but we opted for just the beach break. There was just the three of us on the boat with a couple that was headed to climb the Pitons that we dropped off before hitting Jalousie Beach The snorkeling in this protected marine reserve is great...IF you get there early! About noon, when the land tours drop off guests here, the water gets pretty churned up and sea life is scarce. Fortunately we got there around 10 am and had a few hours with little to no one else there, and it was fantastic! We were also supplied with a great lunch and plenty of various cold beverages including water, soda and beer. About 2:30 we headed back into the boat with some guests from the land tour for the sea tour back to the ship. The guide was knowledgeable and amusing and we had a few laughs while we learned a little about the island and took in some beautiful scenery including Marigot Harbour (which I didn't get any video of cuz the battery died... thanks Obama). All in all, it was a great day.

On our way over to Saba Rock for lunch we take the dinghy past the ever popular Sandbox beach bar for a look, then continue on through the anchorage to arrive at the tiny island resort that was literally built on a rock in the channel.. Saba Rock is always a favorite place to chill and have some drinks while lounging in the beach chairs and hammocks out back.. and even do a little snorkeling! An impression of some dune hopping we did with our paragliders a few months ago in the desert / coastline.. This dune is not quite big enough to stay up, but sure big enough to have some fun and to practice..! Enjoyed together with Jolynn, Chris and Sarah! =D

What's missing in this initial trial is emphasis on sail trim. The Raymarine works well in quite heavy air and sea--far better than the general reputation of wheel pilots--if the boat is trimmed for neutral helm, as it must be for a pendulum wind vane system. Experienced singlehanders reef the main and headsails until the boat just about steers itself. In heavy air this costs a very small amount in speed. For a wheel pilot to work, get rid of weather helm.
