At 40m Spindrift 2 is the largest entrant and likely to be first to finish, racing alongside three record-breaking MOD 70s: Concise 10, Musandam-Oman Sail and Phaedo3.

Rolex Fastnet Race 2015 - IRC 1 Start There are 52 entrants in this class including RORC Committee member, Steven Anderson’s Cracklin Rosie, which will be hoping to firm up their current class lead in the 2015 RORC Season’s Points Championship. No stranger to the Fastnet Rock, Irishman Anthony O’Leary is debuting his Ker 40, Antix, in the race.

Rolex Fastnet Race 2015 - IRC 3 Start The largest class in the race, the boat everyone will be watching will be the Rolex Fastnet Race 2013 overall winner, father and son team, Pascal and Alexis Loison onboard their JPK 10.10, Night and Day.

Rolex Fastnet Race 2015 - IRC 4 Start The class with the lowest rated boats in the fleet includes some of the oldest such as Dorade, the Sparkman and Stephens 1929 classic that last won the Fastnet Race in 1932. Two-time class winner, Noel Racine’s Foggy Dew, will be one to watch, alongside two-handed French entry, Sous Mama Boulé.

The 2015 Rolex Fastnet Race is underway. After negotiating seven separate start sequences called from the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes, the largest fleet in the race’s proud 90-year history have commenced the famous 603-nautical mile offshore race to Plymouth via Ireland’s Fastnet rock. Progress at the start was slow, the 356 race starters forced to find the merest zephyr of breeze during one of the lightest starts in the race’s history. Fortunately a building breeze has seen the fleet make good progress on exiting the Solent.

Test de retournement de Gitana à 180° réussi. Après onze mois de construction, au sein du chantier Multiplast de Vannes, le Mono60 Edmond de Rothschild touchait l'eau pour la première fois vendredi dernier, le 7 août. Mais ce premier contact avec l'élément liquide n'était pas pour autant synonyme de premières navigations. En effet, mis à l'eau sans quille ni mât, le 60 pieds armé par le Baron Benjamin de Rothschild avait rapidement regagné Lorient pour y recevoir ces précieux éléments ainsi quy subir une batterie de tests obligatoires pour tout nouveau monocoque IMOCA afin, notamment, de vérifier sa conformité avec la jauge de la classe. Im Juli 2015 segelten wir mit unserer Etap 28i von Rom/Fiumicino nach Olbia/Sardinien. Mitten auf dem Tyrrhenischen Meer begleiteten uns 3 Finnwale für über 1 Stunde. Das Meer ist dort 1250m tief. Die Wale wirkten völlig entspannt und tauchten sogar unter dem Boot durch. Der Finnwal ist das zweitgrößte Tier der Welt (nach dem Blauwal) und gehört zur Gruppe der Bartenwale. Leider ist er stark gefährdet und vom Aussterben bedroht. Auch Bordhund Jackie (nova scotia duck tolling retriever) war sehr beeindruckt und beobachtete die Wale. The start of the 2015 Rolex Fastnet Race saw a record 356 international yachts set sail on one of the world’s most famous offshore races. Starting from the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes, the international fleet set off on their 603-nautical mile journey to Plymouth via Ireland’s Fastnet rock. Celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, the early hours of the often gruelling Rolex Fastnet Race were characterized by light winds, but still formed a compelling spectacle.

Life was good. But, as potential illegal immigrants, we needed to get out of Dodge before the law caught up with us... We had a few ideas about the route, and would let the wind dictate our final direction. As we upped anchor, another spectacular sunrise unravelled across the islands. We managed some sailing, but resorted to motoring when the wind inevitably died. This was the transitional period--neither NE or SW monsoon--so conditions would continue to be erratic with unpredictable winds and storms, or calm and sunny days. In the end, we headed for the Ko Rok group, two tiny islands with a channel running between them. The archipelago of Ko Rok Nai and Ko Rok Nok is the mother of all those deserted-white-sand-palm-fringed beaches you see in travel brochures and on postcards. The place is a cliché, except that it isn't. It's real and golden and joyous and quiet and infused with peace. It quickly became one of our all time favourite anchorages. For the next couple of days we explored the water--on top and underneath. We walked along the perfect beaches, and wandered inland through a closed campsite. As the tourist season was over we shared the uninhabited islands with only a couple of national park workers. Across the channel from us, close to where we nearly hit the bottom, a sunken catamaran is marked on the charts. We headed over there in our dinghy to get a look. There’s something unsettling about viewing a wreck from the surface, it is a sickening sight for anyone who lives or works on a boat. In silence, we observed the white skeleton lying on its side through the distorted water. We left it undisturbed with the lapping waves guarding its secret story. The other shadow which still hangs over this area is the tsunami of 2004. Most islands and towns have marked safety zones in the event of a repeat occurance, and regularly test alarms and announcements to remind locals and tourists to be alert. Like everyone, we seldom keep our eyes off the water or beach for long in this part of the world. In the early mornings, and at dusk, fat bream fell on Liz's simple bread bait which she used to good effect for catching Millie's supper. There were always plenty to go on the barbecue too. Although fishing is prohibited in Thailand's national parks in the off season, the rangers didn't mind a bit of line fishing; they're less tolerant of spear fishing, and don't allow local fishing boats in the vicinity at all. On the last morning we awoke to a black sky. The weather had been coming in from the west all night, flinging lightning against the horizon in every direction. But as the sun made a feeble attempt to penetrate the clouds, another storm met the one which was still coming our way, and together they hovered over the anchorage. We watched fishing boats speeding in from the horizon to raft up close to the islands. Anchors were thrown out and generators turned on. As the rain smashed the water, the little "boat islands" were obscured, apart from a few dim lights which they'd switched on, even though it was the middle of the morning. With the rain too fierce and inescapable, we went below and waited.
