This film documents our sail from Washington State to San Diego, CA between late September and early December 2014. We had an incredible journey, complete with whale sightings, visits from several species of dolphins, time with friends, and gorgeous sailing. Los Roques is an archipelago of 350 islands, cays and islets! We leave the main island and set off to explore some. We are running out of food quite quickly and spearing is forbidden in Los Roques, so we make a trip to the next island over Aves to stock up with some fish. The main island only receives food deliveries every few weeks and we just missed the previous one by a day... The Square Knot, also called the Reef Knot, is well known to school children who have given up on trying to tie their shoe laces. On a boat it is used primarily for tying a rope to itself. Like when you are securing an item to the boat or a spar.

This may be the most underrated knot. It's fast to tie under load and applicable all around the boat. It's much more reliable and certainly easier to untie than its cousin the clove hitch. This knot is secure, does not allow the line to chafe, and is easily undone. Use this hitch to tie a dockline to a mooring.

This week is all about relaxing in the fun and Sun. Each year the company I work for does a "Reward Trip" they call Legend Makers and if your performance is at a certain place you qualify for the trip. This particular one was a chartered cruise ship (smaller cruise ship) that went from Miami to Nassua Bahamas then to Stirrup Cay Bahamas, Key West Florida and then back to Miami. We had a change in our personal plans and Deb was not able to join me so i invited my Mother to join me on the trip. Now I have to provide a bit of context. My mother doesn't swim, gets motion sickness and doesn't like to go over long bridges because of the water below. So imagine my excitement when she said YES that she would go on a cruise. It was really cool. I hope she had a good time as well. This video covers our arrival in Nassau (including seeing the Pilot boat come along side while I was filming out the balcony) as well as our day in Nassau at a Rum Distillery and a Chocolate Factory. Then it was back to the boat and a trip to Stirrup Cay Bahamas (which is a private island) and the trip and tendering back and forth from the anchored ship to the shore. I hope you enjoy a different view of cruising than what we typically have on our boat. The primary differences were. 1) someone to clean up in your stateroom and 2) the fact that all of the views from the boat were the 8th floor, rather than 4 feet above sea level. Enjoy !! We have always loved the Formosa, bought one (on a bit of a whim) late in 2014, moved aboard this one right away and started to do our refit while living board. After Tual and BauBau, the BPO participants visited Selayar where once again they were not disappointed by their short stay. Once again, they had a chance to taste great local food and do interesting cultural and natural sightseeing. From a tour of Benteng city to Bitombang with the special old houses … from the turtle conservation and education initiative to the snorkeling & diving at Pasi islands. The group also visited the local jail and a primary school where recycling was taught. We were lucky to be there and invited for the anniversary celebration of the Teratai Passiana Art Club. What a great way to experience the local dancing and music! Linda, our tourism office main guide did a great job coordinating our tours.
