Indian Master receives 2016 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea The Master of an oil tanker who says she was “just doing her job” has received the highest IMO bravery recognition for saving the lives of seven fishermen from a sinking fishing boat during a tumultuous storm in the Bay of Bengal in June 2015. “It is every seafarer’s and Master’s solemn duty and obligation to save souls in distress at sea. I just did what a seafarer should do for a fellow soul in distress at sea. Yes, it was an instant decision, but not without assessing the risks involved. I just did my duty,” said Captain Radhika Menon, Master of the oil products tanker Sampurna Swarajya. She was speaking after IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim presented her with the 2016 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea on Monday (21 November), during an emotional ceremony. Captain Menon is the first female captain in the Indian Merchant Navy and the first female to receive the IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea. Our trip to San Francisco included a stop to look at a 1994 Nautor Swan 46. The Swan 46 MKII (1989-1997) and 48 (1995-2002) were both German Frers designs, and featured dual aft cockpits separated by a traveler. Two separate companionways made them a unique product on the market, and they are both solid bluewater boats with a reputation for being bulletproof in foul weather and big seas. This one was in need of some love, but was also the least expensive Swan 46 on the market (in the US) at present. With a little TLC, she could be a find.

Three races held on the penultimate day of racing in Malta and, with not only will the winner of the event to be decided, but also 2016 RC44 Fleet Racing Champion, the RC44 Valletta Cup is lining up to be a three, or possibly four, horse race: Chris Bake's Team Aqua currently holds a slender one point lead over Igor Lah's Team CEEREF, in turn two ahead of Alexander Novoselov's Katusha, with Torbjörn Törnqvist's Artemis Racing a further five points back in fourth. The Smeg team of Lee Knapton, Mike McKensey and Ricky Bridge are the 2016-2017 NSW 18ft Skiff champions after finishing in second place in today’s final race of the series on Sydney Harbour. Going into the last race of the championship tied with Coopers 62-Rag & Famish Hotel (Jack Macartney), the winner was going to be the one which finished ahead of the other and for most of the race it was obvious that the Smeg team would come out on top.
