What’s it like to sail into the busiest container port in the world? Well after sailing through the night, we get to do just that, sailing through the seawall that shelters the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach from the Pacific. Once we arrive in Long Beach, we check out a haunted house at the Queen Mary and catch up on some chores around the boat before setting sail again. Heading South to San Diego, we soak up the sun, taking a baths with buckets of seawater on the deck and discuss our power consumption on the boat and plans to upgrade our solar system. Sailing through the night, we arrive San Diego in the early hours of the morning. Headed towards the cruiser’s anchorage, we first have to deal with a very lengthy and confusing “check in” process. Highlights from Day 1 of the 7th annual Catamarans Cup!

In this episode we head back to Florida to take ownership of our new-to-us cat, Double-Wide! She’s a beautiful 2004 Seawind 1160 catamaran, built in Australia, and we’re her fourth owners. She’s in pretty good shape, but definitely isn’t without issues, as we discovered during our trip. http://www.sailingwithdogs.com/2016/12/02/we-officially-own-a-new-boat/ We start our time in Florida meeting up with Chuck, Double-Wide’s previous owner, and he helps us to get familiar with the boat, hoists the jib which had been packed away in storage, and talks us through a bunch of spare parts that had been collected over the years by him and the owner before him, Cameron. Then, it was off for a whirlwind shopping tour of Naples, FL with visits to West Marine (where I pondered the style of womens’ sailing clothing - really guys, we need some better options!), Bed Bath & Beyond, and Target. We spent the evening unpacking then had an early night. Next morning, we had some tasks to complete before we could leave, including inflating the “ancient pice of crap” dinghy we’d inherited with the boat - we were happy it seemed to still be in one piece even if it didn’t look especially pretty … Finally, we took off on our first sail on the new boat! More of that next time. Sailing 7,000 miles over 7 months we finally make landfall in Madagascar! The last few days of the sail have been very hectic though and we wake up to high 30 knots of breeze and 4-5 meter seas left over from the gale the night before. The crew is in high spirits because we made good progress overnight and are only 32 miles away the northern cape of Madagascar! We cruise around the cape making 14 knots of boat speed in 40 knots of wind. It's wicked sailing but soon we are behind the lee and protection of Madagascar and reach Nosy Be where we drop the hook. We're welcomed to the yacht club with all the food we've been craving. Cheap, cold beers and delicious salads and pizza. There's live music, dancing, and a super cool atmosphere. We begin to fall in love with Madagascar. This is our story, a story of three souls sailing around the world. It is a story about sailing, but it's also a story about the fantastic people we meet and amazing places we see. It's a story of people living their lives in an alternate way, in close connection with the beautiful people and amazing planet that we call home. Our experience has affected us so profoundly we want to share it, hoping that others may find inspiration to follow their dreams and do what they love. My first motor vessel! I didn't even know Gulfstar made motor yachts, but this one was certainly impressive.
