Fitzroy Reef makes up part of the Souther Great Barrier Reef. The lagoon oasis is roughly 40 nautical miles from land, in the middle of the ocean. There is a skinny natural entrance into the lagoon, via a tiny channel in the coral. Once inside Fitzroy Reef, the lagoon is calm and protected from the open ocean swell and wind. The depth is shallow enough to anchor and you are protected from the elements. An amazing place that blew us away. The RC44's 10th anniversary year came to a close at the RC44 Valletta Cup in Malta with one of the closest fought finals in Class history. Artemis Racing triumphed over Team Nika in the final match race of the year taking the 2016 RC44 Match Racing crown. Whereas Chris Bake's Team Aqua won the RC44 Valletta Cup by a point from Igor Lah's Team CEEREF, but with a two-point advantage going into this final event, Team CEEREF claimed the overall RC44 Fleet Racing Championship title for 2016 by a point from Team Aqua. Armel Le Cleac'h has reached Cape Leeuwin Australia at the head of the fleet and Brit Alex Thomson in his German Hugo Boss Mercedes Benz machine was 60 miles behind. Kiwi Conrad Colman was a leg back at the Cape of Good Hope and after his huge knock-down has lost his big Gennaker overboard. He's going to find the Southern Ocean difficult now without that sail but as he said it was either the mast or the sail.
