The docks themselves are not designed for sailboats, made of concrete with no bumpers and there are some really big wakes that roll through the Marina. Brown's Marina - Bimini Bahamas. Clean and in excellent condition. Super helpful staff and good wifi. Ernest Hemmingway wrote about this marina in his book Islands in the Stream. End of the World Saloon - not open but we meet the owner and went for a tour. Would definitely recommend checking it out when it reopens after its repairs are complete. We have lived aboard our boat throughout its entire refit, starting back in June 2015. There have been days where camping in a tent would have been a big upgrade, but we felt being inside the mess would be a huge motivator to getting work done. As areas get completed, the boat feel a little nicer and a little more livable. Bimini, wind generator, radar and old solar panels… goodbye! It’s time to upgrade our solar and make some big changes on Varuna! Oh, and we also get to upgrade ours, though not by choice… In this episode, we do a bit of exploring in San Diego visiting Balboa park, then get to work on our big solar upgrade. We start by removing pretty much everything from our cockpit to make way for two giant, 320-watt LG solar panels. We decide our flimsy bimini structure is not strong enough to hold them, so we begin to build a new “solar arch” ourselves from 1” stainless tubing and rail fittings. This week was a sad time, my stepmother Marlene McCray, lost her battle 4 years after having a stroke that paralyzed her. She was from England and had the best sayings in the world. When I was a kid and she would refer to something as the "Bloody Thing" I was always amused. She had a slew of these great english sayings. Deb and i and the grandkids came to NJ to be with my dad, as did my sister and her husband Randy. We all got together with the family and while it would have been better to do this under different circumstances, it was a time to celebrate a very full and joyful life. While we were in New Jersey visiting my dad, we also spent some time to do a little sight seeing and take the girls up into the NY City. Come ride along with us to Rockefeller Center, Times Square, The Jersey Shore, The liberty Bell in Philadelphia and Independence Hall. Join us on our journey as we continue to rebuild, refit and prepare our Formosa 51 Sailboat for our continued cruising journey. We have always loved the Formosa, bought one (on a bit of a whim) late in 2014, moved aboard this one right away and started to do our refit while living board.
