Sailed over the weekend of 2-4 June in the very best of early northern summer sailing weather, the Sevenstar Contest Cup drew a good fleet of 33 Contest yachts from 31-62ft (9-19m) for this enjoyable event which offers fun but competitive racing and also a programme of social sailing for the less competitive. A great way to broaden involvement and also, of course, conversation in the very social evening gatherings.

This is part two on our sailing across the Atlantic ocean. In this episode we experienced absolutely different conditions than during the first one but I am so happy I went through all of that. A few weeks ago I was invited to take part in the Women's Keelboat Championships in the Solent. It was a great opportunity to do something competitive - something I really miss being a mother - but it was great fun too. TRANSCRIPT This weekend I did W.O.C which is the Women’s Open Keelboat Championships. We borrowed a boat from the United Kingdom Sailing Academy. They were kind enough to let us use one of their keelboats and that was also arranged by Pete Tyler at Neilson. So the weekend consisted of six races. On Saturday there were three races. The races were probably a couple of miles long each and then we went out partying on Saturday night for the frocks and flip-flops party. So it's nice to go out and party a bit with lots of other women.. with a hog roast and a glass Prosecco. Then on Sunday we started again at 10 in the morning we did three long races. It was really great to do this this weekend because I don't get involved with a lot of racing anyway, I’m mainly skippering boats for other people or just taking people out or helping with the kids so it's nice to get out and be competitive. That's another thing that I don't really get to do, you're not encouraged to be competitive when you're mother. Yeah, there are some technical skills that I don't get to practice very much, I don't get involved with a lot of racing. Cruising is very different so racing you have to do a lot of things really quickly. My main job in was to trim so it's trimming the spinnaker and try and get it in the boat before it goes under the boat. So you have to do it really quick and you have to be really strong but it's quite good fun. It's really great to pack up my rucksack that I used to go traveling with and shoot off for the weekend knowing that the kids were in good hands with their Dad and also when I get back it’s telling them what I've done and it inspires them maybe because both my eldest daughter and my middle son are learning how to sail at the moment on their little Opy's and if they see that I’m doing it as well it might inspire them. Okay, so I'm off to do my lifeguarding beach patrol job. I’ve got my socks and my nice warm Dubbary’s and this is half the gear that we've got but I've got loads more kit to keep me nice and toasty warm today. The kids all forgot their pack lunches so I'm doing that on the way. We finally are leaving Vero Beach and setting sail down the coast of Florida. We have sold and packed up our belongings to move aboard our new-to-us Lagoon 410 sailing catamaran. We have completed an inland shakedown cruise down the inter-coastal waterway and are now ready to do a coastal cruise shakedown down to Miami. My sister, Heather, flies in to join us as part of the crew. We leave her, the kids and pets behind for a few days and encounter some foul weather and rough seas while underway. We get to freshen up our navigation and sailing skills and learn how this vessel handles under sail. After a week sailing down the coast we get the kids and my sister back on board to sail down to Key Biscayne. We make it into No Name Harbor just in time for dinner after a nice sail down. We spend several days playing around and getting provisions waiting out weather. We start getting ready to make our first offshore sail over to the Bahamas. We are so grateful to be living our dream and look forward to sharing our journey with you. Thanks so much for joining us on our adventure!!

In this episode my guest host Andy Lamont talks with Stuart Morton about his cruising adventures on his Panama stopover. After leaving England 11 years ago on his 39 foot yacht Matador, Chris and his wife Steph have cruised the Mediterranean, Lebanon, the Black Sea, Turkey, Cyprus, Syria, Gibraltar, USA, Cuba, Bahamas and the Caribbean. Then while sitting in his cockpit anchored in Shelter Bay in Panama a storm came through punching out 30-40 knot squalls. A loud crack followed by a puff of black smoke cloud off top of mast and the smell of frying semi-conductors and circuits downstairs led to Stuarts initial fear that his yacht was on fire. Stuart accounts what happened next after realising Matador had been struck by lightning. This episode is packed with the highs and lows of cruising internationally and the many challenges faced along the way.
