(I realize this should have been published before the episode crossing the Channel. Internet logistics issue.) I launch my 2018 sailing adventure: sailing solo to the Shetland Islands. This first phase (La Rochelle to Brest, France) is the core of this video, with 4 dockings at ports enroute, and discussion of various miscellaneous subjects such as digital chart presentation, sleeping during coastal passages, and preparing for 'tidal gates'.

Our shakedown cruise is officially underway! After crossing Lake Michigan with Kirk’s dad, we arrive in Pentwater, MI where we meet up with the rest of Kirk’s family. It’s our first of many ports of call along Michigan’s west coast we visit over the next few weeks. Pentwater ends up being one of our favorite stops. We hang out at the beach, walk the docks, cookout with Kirk’s family, and watch the sunset over the lake. Next stop: Frankfort. We leave Pentwater before sunrise and sail over 12 hours (60 nautical miles). The sun is out, the winds are light, we fly the spinnaker, and Kirk works from the cockpit. A thunderstorm blows through while we’re at the dock in Frankfort, and we watch another sailboat drag anchor nearly into the dinghy dock. Life is not always sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes the cruising life throw you some struggles. In this episode we have a bee attack on the boat and later on have to set out to sea again due to not being able to check in to Costa Rica. Pura Vida as they say in Costa Rica :) We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. In questo video vi illustriamo come abbiamo composto il nostro impianto elettrico 12-220 volt a bordo di Perseus. Le nostre fonti principali sono i 6 pannelli solari semi-flessibili da 100 watt l'uno, il generatore eolico da 500 watt montato sull'albero di mezzana e il caricabatterie da 60 A. Il caricabatterie è alimentato dal generatore diesel da 3,5 KWatt o dalla linea della banchina. Il pacco batterie è composto da 6 batterie da 2 volt 850 Ah l'una collegate in serie per avere i 12volt. Sono a scarica lenta e quindi le utilizziamo per le utenze (luci, strumenti di navigazione...), per il salpaancora e per l'elica di prua. Forniscono energia anche ad un inverter da 1400 watt così da evitare il più possibile di collegarci alla 220 della banchina (o di dover accendere il generatore). When we were docked in Venice, FL we saw these guys catch the biggest fish I have ever seen. It was GIANT! They caught the huge fish right there from the dock. Is was a Goliath Grouper. It looked like it was 5' long, like something out of river monsters! You can tell he put up quite a fight. We talk to the guys later. They run a local fishing charter called Liquid Lifestyle. They told us this huge fish lives under the dock there at the Jetty in Venice, FL. I want to learn how to fish like that. This is The Boat Life. The aft cabin aka the master bedroom will have an ensuite! 44' sometimes feels HUGE.

It might not be the prettiest thing you ever did see, but in our heads it's splendid! Also, I'm fairly certain that the 8ft kitchen won't be that much smaller than some of the ones I've had in various apartments. Actually, it might be bigger.

Originally the Varua Mataii, the boat was built over a few years in the early 1990s. The original owner never rigged her, or ran the engine, so far as we can tell. The Mataii was used as a livea board in a marina for ~15years, but the interior was never properly finished. When we got the boat, there was just some rather elderly plywood inside, and not really anything else. The shed in the video was included in the purchase, and came with all sorts of odds and ends. Mainly a very large number of old paint rollers and used brushes. Not really sure why... As of April 2018, we have created a plywood mock-up of what we want the interior to look like, and will be basing our final build on the current set up. Most interior layouts we found are for coastal sailing, and we are hoping to make a blue water cruiser. Also, we are totally taking advantage of new tech! Solar panels & batteries for days, yo.
