We cross over from the Gulf side to the Atlantic Ocean for our first time sailing in the ocean. The winds completely die down and we decide to change our plans and anchor just outside of Long Key State Park for the night before we continue on to Tom's Harbor Keys. Touchdown in Auckland, but like everyone else who enters New Zealand 14 days managed quarantine lies between me and immersion in the America's Cup world. Fortunately as I sit out the two weeks in my hotel room there's been plenty to watch, plenty of chatter and plenty of detail to look into as we watch teams get ready for the America's Cup World Series that starts on 17 December. Thanks to some great filming from Giles Martin-Raget we are now able to see the teams going through their routines as they limber up for the Christmas Cup. So here are my first impressions.

Santa is busier than ever this Christmas of 2020, delivering all gifts on a safe distance. Using Ekkono's embedded Edge ML software to predict how many time Santa and his reindeer will take off, we can estimate if he will make it in time or not. Just enough sensor data (produced from the sound of honking cars) will able us to predict hos many take-offs Santa will make in a day, in a week, and until Christmas.

Nandji's interior was insulated with a marine carpet on the walls. Whilst it is probably a good insulator, it looks shocking and gets dirty, so it is time to renovate and modernise Nandji. After the reef incident earlier in the year, 2 major problems have since risen. One being the cutlass bearing is worn and wore out rapidly, suggesting a bent shaft. The second the Hydrovane self steering is loose and caused damage to the transom. Both pretty big jobs and needed to be fixed! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! My favorite place to sail is Eleven Mile Reservoir near the town of Lake George, Colorado. But during the winter, Eleven Mile becomes a haven for ice fishing.

Season 7 : Episode #166 : Serious Sailing between Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Islands Hello Friends, On this weeks episode we start our day on the hook at Santa Cruz Island after a very rolly night in the anchorage of Morse Point. We decided to do our first (non- emergency) sail off of anchor given there large open anchorage we were in and the good steady winds. We tied the first reef in the mainsail and Camille worked the boat towards the anchor, powering up the main then goin into irons so I could easily haul the the anchor as we would have if we had the motor on. It went perfectly and was a lot of fun. We instantly realized that we needed to tie our 2nd reef in as the boat was already over powered in the protected bay. At first Eileen and I were very hesitant buying a used charter boat from Moorings Sunsail because of the amount of bareboat wear and tear they get over a five year period as well as some of the stories we had heard. In fact, so many that we almost considered buying new; however, that would have left less money for the cruising kitty and none for essential upgrades. We took a chance and bought a used 2015 Leopard 44 catamaran that we found on the Leopard Brokerage site and were MORE than pleased with the whole process which started in August, 2020 and ended with closing in November, 2020 in at the Mooring Sunsail St. Lucia base. We were SO satisfied that we did this video interview with base manager Lene Volney which touches on the phase out process, employees at the St Lucia base as well as a bonus of tips to sailing St Lucia. During the "phase out" process, Mooring Sunsail's professional highly trained crew worked on our boat for over two months fixing and repairing and has handed over our boat which has surveyed in "Very Good Condition" meaning it is almost in brand new condition inside and out! Thank you Moorings Sunsail! It is our desire that you also benefit from our experience. BOTTOM LINE is that there are currently two 2015 Leopard 44 owners versions on the market now for $567K and $569K with little to no upgrades for essentially the same boat minus the owner's version sofa and full shower which in our opinion is a poor use of space. This price differential leaves ample funds (savings of $250K+) for our upgrades as we transform our bareboat empty canvas into a world class blue water cruising live aboard for circumnavigation. In the right conditions, a spinnaker staysail will increase your speed up to three quarters of a knot, without changing your rating one bit. Staysails are free sail area. The spinnaker staysail, also called the Dazy Staysail, is a tall, narrow, high-clewed very light sail used under a spinnaker, symmetrical or asymmetrical. The sail is intended to have its tack set on the center-line of the foredeck about one quarter to one third of the way back from the headstay to the mast. Its luff length is as great as will fit between that tack position and top of the foretriangle. Its width, or LP, is about 80% or 85% of J. A wider sail would have greater area, but would not be as effective over as great a wind speed range or within as large a range of apparent wind angles.

While the code zero is a weapon on the race course, it also makes cruising and daysailing more fun. This weekend it added a good two to three knots of boat speed since it is more than twice the size of my boat’s non-overlapping jibs.

Ocean Youth Sailing's goal is to teach kids and young adults about the environment and ocean sailing on their 45-foot catamaran. Their two-hulled floating classroom/dormitory was built by students who learned the arts of composite boat building. Here is a video of them sailing. In this episode we join the Ocean Crusaders/ Sunsail Flotilla over an action packed week, where we collect a whopping 2000KG of rubbish from the beaches of the Whitsundays! We start our adventure at Shute Harbour and sail to the Lindeman Islands, where we find a catamaran stuck on the shore, a dinghy wedged up high in the rocks and beaches covered in plastic pollution! We sail on to some of the most amazing islands the Whitsundays have to offer including Hamilton Island, Whitsunday Island and Hook Island. We also clean-up some of the most beautiful beaches in Australia including Whitehaven beach, so it can continue to be preserved as one of the most amazing locations in the world. Throughout this adventure, we aim to leave nothing behind but our footprints and restore the beaches of the Whitsunday islands to how they once were! During the trip we visited the historic aboriginal caves at Narra Inlet and reflect on how pristine these locations must have been centuries ago. We hope to spread awareness about the major plastic pollution issue in Australia, many people tend to think that we are not affected by it here as we are a first world country, but that's not the case! The affects of plastic pollution can be greatly seen on the Australian East Coastline, and with the help of organisations like ocean crusaders, we aim to clean-up Australia one plastic piece at a time! Cleaning up rubbish from our oceans will not only preserve our beautiful beaches but will save so many marine animals from death by plastic. This episode opens on night two of our passage from the northern part of the Bahamas to the east coast of the US. For this passage, Grace has joined our friends on Delos as crew and Bill has set sail solo. Together, we’re buddy boating on a northward trajectory, aiming for the Chesapeake Bay, still 650 nautical miles away. Day three is peaceful and a pod of dolphins visits Bill on Calico Skies. He is thriving on his solo adventure, explaining how he uses guard zones on the chart plotter using radar, and his alarm system for scanning the horizon in between getting some rest. He also explains how he communicates via email and SMS text, as well as downloads weather or GRIB files using the Iridium Go our Satellite Phone. The drama begins to unfold around day four, but with two different boats there are two different sets of challenges. On Calico Skies Bill struggles with squalls and a strong current pushing the boat off of course. Our heading, the direction the bow is pointed, is far different from the direction the boat is actually going, or it's course over ground. Mitte August 2020 war es endlich soweit, der langersehnte Urlaub war angebrochen und wir machten uns auf nach Heiligenhafen um zu unserem dreiwöchigen Törn in den schwedischen Westschären los zu segeln. Zunächst waren allerdings noch einige Arbeiten im Mast notwendig, so dass der Skipper in luftige Höhen hoch gewinscht wurde. Samstag Nachmittags ging es dann endlich los und Mystra segelte nach Norden Richtung Großer Belt in den Sonnenuntergang. Der erste Schlag des Törns war als Nachtfahrt nach Kerteminde geplant. Wir wollten gleich zu Anfang gut Strecke segeln. Außerdem ermöglichte uns die Ankunft am Morgen einen schönen Hafentag in Kerteminde, so dass wir eine Sightseeing Tour durch das hübsche Städtchen machen und unsere Vorräte komplettieren konnten. Jetzt geht unser Weg weiter richtung Westen. Die nächsten 2 1/2 Jahre werden wir nutzen um den Pazifik zu durchqueren, den indonesischen Raum zu erkunden und letztendlich nach der Umrundung des Kap der guten Hoffnungen wieder Fuß auf europäisches Land zu setzen.
