Binnen durch den Kontinent - Rhone stromaufwärts Teil 5 Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. Bereits 2018 starteten wir Richtung Wien, doch ein Motorschaden in der Straße von Messina zwang uns, den Überstellungstörn abzubrechen. Am vierten September kamen wir in Wien an, 980 Seemeilen und 2120 km über die europäischen Wasserstraßen lagen hinter uns. Seitdem liegt Squib in der Wiener Kuchelau, der Refit hat bereits begonnen. Es war nun soweit. Unsere größte Reise und längster Segeltörn – die Atlantiküberquerung (#Hanse, #Hanse455) stand an. Was kann alles passieren? Bleibt das Wetter stabil? Reicht das Essen und Trinken an Board aus? Was tun, wenn etwas am Boot kaputt geht? Wie reagieren wir auf gesundheitliche Probleme? All die Fragen und noch mehr sind uns natürlich durch den Kopf gegangen und wurden auch ausgiebig besprochen und wenn möglich auch vorsorgliche Maßnahmen bereits ergriffen. Doch man kann sich nicht immer auf alles vorbereiten und wie es im Leben so oft ist; Es kommt immer anders als man denkt. Am 20.11.2021 war es dann soweit. Wir haben gegen 10 Uhr, gemeinsam mit unseren Buddyboat Elane, Mindelo und somit Kapverden verlassen und uns auf den großen Atlantik gewagt. Wir waren aufgeregt, hatten gemischte Gefühle, aber sind mit großer Freude und guter Dinge gestartet. Für die erste Woche war wenig Wind in der Wettervorherschau angesagt. So kam es dann auch. Wir hatten viele Flauten, weshalb wir einen Umweg gen Süden gefahren sind, um etwas mehr Wind abzubekommen. In der erste Hälfte haben wir ca. 17h gemotort. Ansonsten konnten wir unser Passatsegel, das Blue Water Sail, sehr gut einsetzen und haben bei leichten Wind recht schnelle Fahrt gemacht. Wir waren sehr zufrieden mit unseren Start für die Atlantiküberquerung, die See war ruhig und keine hohe Welle – so haben wir uns das auch vorgestellt. Neben den guten Segelbedingung, haben wir wahrscheinlich auch den Fischfang unseres Lebens gemacht. Einen 1,9m langen Blue Marlin (#BigGame) haben wir mit der Angel gefangen. Das Geräusch von der Angel, wenn ein Fisch angebissen hat, werden wir wohl nie vergessen. Es hat uns über eine Stunde gekostet, den Fisch an Board zu bekommen. Letztendlich haben wir das Vorfach der Angelleine auf die Winch gelegt und den Blue Marlin an Board gewincht. Wir waren bis auf die Unterwäsche durchgeschwitzt vor Aufregung und Anstrengung. Am Ende das Tages haben wir zwei volle Waschbecken Fischfleisch gehabt und der Freezer war bis zum letzten freien Platz belegt und hatte gut zu tun, den Fisch einzufrieren. Wir haben noch nie einen so faszinierenden und beeindruckenden großen Fisch in der Realität gesehen – und dann auch noch an der eigenen Angel. Besser hätte es nicht laufen können. Doch leider hat sich in der zweiten Woche das Blatt für uns etwas gewendet und das Glück hat uns verlassen. Während eines Manövers ist ein Stahlseil, welches das Ruder mit dem Steuerrädern verbindet, gerissen und wir haben für einen kurzen Moment die Kontrolle über das Boot verloren, da wir nicht mehr in der Lage waren das Boot zu manuell zu steuern. Für einen kurzen Moment ist Panik ausgebrochen. Doch wir hatten Glück im Unglück, da der Autopilot unabhängig der manuellen Steuerung funktionierte und wir somit das Boot wieder auf den Track bringen konnten. Dennoch braucht man eine solche Aufregung überhaupt nicht, wenn man tauschende Kilometer vom Festland entfernt ist und rundum nur Wasser. Zudem der Wind in der zweiten Hälfte immer stärker wurde und somit auch die Wellen immer größer. Wir hatten zum Teil Windböen bis zu 37kn. Nach 16 Tagen allein auf dem Atlantik, mit wunderschönen Sonnenauf- und untergängen, springenden Delphinen um uns herum, Sonnenschein und blauer Himmer, aber auch Regenfall und dunkle Wolken, wo man sich denkt „Jetzt geht die Welt unter“, nach Höhen und Tiefen haben wir dann endlich und langersehnt Land in Sicht gehabt. L'équipage fait aussi la rencontre de ses premiers ours bruns à Geographic Harbor, considéré par plusieurs navigateurs comme l'un des plus beaux mouillages de l'Alaska.

We hauled out the boat for the first time since buying it. Do a complete paint job inside and out. We use Interlux Perfection on the hull and Brightside on the top. On the inside we used an oil based exterior paint. 1974 Gulfstar 44 Motor Sailor

The ballast keel box is completed! I finish with the lead melting and pouring and the box is filled to the brim (nearly). Some mounting points are attached to fit the sacrificial zinc anodes and finally, I seal the top of the box with a nice smooth pour of epoxy. This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. I get a nasty sting when we just wanted to take some time to enjoy the beach after a few days heading into the wind and we do an unusual “stern to cave” mooring instead of the more common med mooring. We are sailing SV CUBA from Lefkada to Kefalonia and spent the night in a quiet bay. However, the area was crowded with charter yachts and after visiting a wasp-infested beach, we decide to cool off and anchor med mooring style, by positioning our “backyard” close to a cave we discovered. We drop plenty of chain and tie our stern to shore. After some discussions about the surrounding flora and fauna, we escape the heat at midday and venture into the darkness. Ill-equipped, our curiosity takes the best of us as we go on and on, well, until the light goes out. Still alive, back out and on the water, we reflect on our negligence and are later surprised by a brilliant downwind sail and dolphins on the bow. We are Enrique (Kiki) from Cuba and Sarah (Salsa) from Germany on a mission to sail around the world. We have almost no sailing experience, but are determined to circumnavigate & share our adventures with you. Join us on our first stop, when we explore the abandoned bunkers of Albania. In this episode Kate talks about the fear she feels before a sail and her fears of the unknown as we approach potential standing waves as Atlantic swell met a strong ebb tide at the river mouth at Porto before sailing from Porto to Cascais on a rolly overnight 36 hour passage. We arrive in Cascais and pass some time onboard making hummus and editing videos whilst it rains outside before exploring the town and some interesting art.
