As far as we know, we’re the last sailboat on the river. The only other watercraft are tows with barges, a couple motorboats being delivered for winter storage, and bunch of duck hunters. It’s a bit desolate, but beautiful. It feels like we have the river all to ourselves. At the city marina in Peoria, Illinois, the docks are completely empty. Shortly after we arrive, an employee walked to the farthest dock and hung a metal sign: MARINA CLOSED. We wondered if they might shut the power off on us, but thankfully it stayed on all night, and so did our electric heater. Because the temperatures regularly dipped to freezing, and we don’t have a way to heat our boat without shore power, we stayed at free docks and marinas every chance we could get. But, the southern half of the Illinois River is much less developed, and there’s no way around anchoring — unless you travel at night, which is risky business — and we were not about to do that. We ended up anchoring for a night at Big Blue Island. It took us three times to feel good about our bow and stern anchor setup, as it was our first time ever using two anchors, and our first time anchoring in a current. The night was periodically rolly due to barge traffic, but in the morning we woke to perfect calm water and lovely bird songs. The fall colors were really firing up. This video, featuring music by Common Jack, is a tribute to the beauty of the river. Hope you enjoy! Lauren & Kirk P.S. Sailing the beautiful Solomon Islands has been a dream of mine so it was very nice to get out of dusty noisy Honiara and get somewhere "real". I really had the feeling that I was about to embark on a grand adventure but I was trying not to get my hopes up. Turns out I had nothing too worry about as the next couple of weeks were incredible. Just learning so much, seeing so much happiness in the locals and finally being away from distractions and living each day for what it gave. I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific. What a surprise to see turquoise water and white sandy beaches up in Canada! After many weeks of mostly being onboard Ran it felt so good to take long walks on the beach. And we couldn't resist going for a swim in the ocean :) Pruth Bay on Calvert Island was a real gem! We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter, January 2016, and started sailing south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us. We sail back in time to where the Dragons roam free... https://www.sailingnandji.com This week on Sailing Nandji, with over 1600nm to sail west to reach Malaysia and our new motor, we can not waste time hanging around. It is a massive challenge we have set ourselves to sail this far in the changing of the seasons. Breaking the trip into smaller passages, we leave our overnight anchorage at Savu island and sail 150nm back in time the islands of Komodo, famous for the largest lizards in the world, the Komodo Dragons. These beasts are quite the sight as they let us know who is boss! We head out diving the pristine waters around the anchorage and are amazed at the vibrant sea life under the water. We had a great stop off at this amazing anchorage, but with many more miles to sail, it is back to sea we go with the remaining trade wind! We are a young couple with a dog, who with no sailing experience, bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! We have been in Indonesia for a couple of months cruising and are now high tailing to Malaysia for boat work. We departed Australia 18 months ago and have since explored some amazing countries, met some amazing people and experienced cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades! SUBSCRIBE TO OUR CHANNEL. https://www.youtube.com/c/frothlyfesailingnandji CLICK THE BELL to know when NEW Nandji videos are up! It only took 6 weeks to make this episode!! Sorry about the hold up!! Following from our run from hurricane Isaac we arrive in the island of Carriacou, Grenada. After checking in to the country we explore our new surroundings as we know we're going to be here a little while to wait out the rest of hurricane season. During our exploration of Hillsborough, the main town on the island, we get in touch with a fantastic local dive shop, Deefer Diving (deeferdiving.com - which we can't recommend enough!!!) and under the fantastic tutor-age of Lani, our travel buddy and dive instructor, we head under the water for a few days of diving!
