Die Dominikanische Republik bietet so viel mehr als die bekannten All Inclusive-Hotels! Es gibt keine Segeltradition auf dieser zweitgrößten Karibikinsel so wie in den früheren englischen oder französischen Inseln der Kleinen Antillen und nur wenige Blauwassersegler sind dort unterwegs. Völlig zu Unrecht, denn die Bucht von Samaná im Norden und die vielfältige Südküste bieten einzigartige Strände, Naturparks und Kultur mit viel karibischem Flair. Die Passatwinde sind oft etwas moderater als im Rest der Karibik, ideal zum Baden und Schnorcheln. Während unserer Segelsaison von Januar – April ist es auch meist trocken. Das absolute Highlight sind aber die Buckelwale in der riesigen Bucht von Samaná. Ca. 1/3 aller nordatlantischen Wale paaren und gebären dort (Jan. – März), was etwa 5000 Tiere bedeutet, die sich zumindest ein paar Tage in diesen flachen Gewässern aufhalten. (Mütter mit neugeborenen Kälbern bleiben mehrere Wochen). Nirgendwo auf der Welt gibt es also eine ähnlich hohe Sichtungswahrscheinlichkeit dieser riesigen - bis 17 m - langen Meeressäugern mit ihren Gesängen und Wasserballetten, bei dem sich die Tiere fast vollständig aus der dem Wasser herauskatapultieren, um mit lautem Klatschen dann wieder einzutauchen. 5 days at sea, sailing Panama to Galapagos (845 nm). It was good to set sail and be free of all things technology for a while (minus the cameras and video editing on the lappy….. But luckily I love that stuff). It was very calm for most of the trip. A BIG difference in weather if you compare it to the Caribbean, especially around Columbia!! Looking back, that was absolutely crazy. We couldn’t believe the amount of wild life we saw on this trip alone.
