Erik Haaland erik@davidwaltersyachts.com Shannon Boat Company of Bristol, RI was founded in 1975 by Walter Schultz and David Walters to build strong, comfortable offshore cruising yachts. Over the years Shannon Boat Company built a reputation for quality, comparable to the best including Hinckley in the US and the best in Europe. Many Shannons have circumnavigated and the company offered a wide range of designs. Every Shannon is a semi-custom yacht built for a specific owner and is painstakingly constructed to the highest standards using the finest materials. Miramar is no different, and in many respects the finest yacht that Shannon was tasked to construct. The yachts owners, both knowledgable sailors, were highly involved in the yachts construction as they fitted Miramar with features, layouts, and materials that would make the yacht not only personally theirs but also provide a striking appeal to guests and other experienced yachtsmen. Miramar's build was so detailed and extensive that construction was started in 2012 with full commissioning not occurring until 2014. Shannon wanted to make sure that Miramar was the best yacht they had ever built, to be the jewel of the sea and the queen of the boat shows. The Shannon 52 RDP is a pilot yacht designed for those looking for a modern styled, luxurious, short-handed ocean cruiser that allows them to get out of the weather. The 52 RDP is not a motor-sailor, but a full fledged sailing yacht with many of the benefits found in pilothouse and motor-sailor designs. Miramar is fitted with the Walter Schultz designed 'Sketch' rig. This allows the yacht to sail well in a wide range of wind speeds without putting crew outside of the cockpit. Double head stays are fitted with furlers for a full size 135% genoa and yankee. Leisurefurl booms for the mainsail and mizzen. There is also a mizzen staysail. A cable staysail halyard is fitted for the addition of a storm staysail if required. An asymmetrical spinnaker is aboard in an ATN sleeve for easy use off the wind. One of the owners requirements was that the yacht be functional in the ICW which she is thanks for her Sketch rig height under 64' and shoal draft of 5' 9" with the centerboard raised.

Lionfish are the scourge of the Caribbean! Let's hunt and eat as many as we can! They lay millions of eggs, feast on other juvenile fish species, and have no natural predators in the Caribbean. We’ve hunted lionfish for a long time and thought it would be cool to share what we’ve learned about this problem with y’all. We begin this episode by explaining how we choose dive sites by looking at our nautical charts, knowing that large drop-offs and changes in depth coupled with current usually make for excellent diving. Our chosen area is too far to take Maggie, so we weigh anchor on Delos and sail out to Little Tobago. The scuba diving is out of this world! The only problem is the reef is ripe with nasty ole’ lionfish. We decide to do our part by hunting as many as we can and sharing a few facts about them. Nate cuts open their bellies to show how they feast on other juvenile fish species, and how to cut the spines off to avoid being stung. By the way, they are easy to clean and absolutely DELICIOUS. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. We did all of that and so much more.  Some of it was gut-wrenching, some bittersweet and some of it was giving back to those who give to us unconditionally.  We even crossed over into another continent to see our saltiest of friends (South Africa…beyond incredible). And then there was this pandemic that started mucking up everything, for everyone.  WTF! Travel, banned.  Flights, grounded.  Borders, closed.  Quarantined.  Stranded.  In route back to our tiny floating home, we were stopped.  The world was shutting down and we weren’t allowed to make the final flight home.  It was canceled. Now here we are, in Fiji for the foreseeable future.  Self-isolating…waiting, pining for home. But, mother nature doesn’t bend to human pandemics, rules or lockdowns.  She rages on. There is a monster category 5 cyclone claiming lives in the Solomon Islands, ripping Vanuatu to shreds and heading straight for us.  Then, directly to Tonga…where, our home is parked. I feel we are being tested, tried, possibly pranked, in a very unfunny way.  Whatever the case, here is the story about that time we survived Cyclone Harold, while in isolation in Fiji during a pandemic. WHO ARE WE? We’re Jason and Nikki Wynn. We been living off the grid and exploring the world for almost a decade. Our first six years of travel were an epic road trip around North America. Now we’re on a sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not! Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild adventures, and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible. Our FINAL SAIL of the season takes us down the Wild Coast of South Africa and back to CAPE TOWN!!! Sailing around the Cape of Good Hope can be some of the most dangerous waters in the world but the forecast looks and we decide to go for the run down the Wild Coast! We have some epic wind and good speeds and blast around right through the Agulhas current, but before rounding Cape Agulahas a low pressure system forces us into Mossel bay to wait for thing to clear. We wake up early to find clear sunny skies and make our final sail around Cape Point and into the amazing city of Cape Town!
