If I had to describe navigating the Llangollen canal in one sentence, it would be: High action in slow motion.  The first 11 miles are designated as a world heritage site for its beauty and historic engineering…and it’s easy to see why. This week we take our first sail in South Africa and get to see table Mountain from the ocean side. We see our new sailboat we will be using sailing and learning how to sail in rough conditions. My dollar boat is sitting waiting for us to come back with lots of sailing experience so we can take her wherever we want to go. Sailing around the world is a term thrown around but we want to have good sailing experience before we do this. We don't have a luxury yacht bet we will sail our little sailboat as far as we can. To avoid collisions at sea we have to gear up and sail in all conditions especially because I am sailing with children and cruising on a boat with a child is a big responsibility. We try to tread lightly in the places we travel, and respect the local laws and traditions. But sometimes things go sideways. In today's video we decide to leave the outer islands of the San Blas and anchor close to a large non-traditional Kuna Village. We start out by exploring a local river (Rio Diablo) by dinghy. Everything is going to plan until we realize that the water level is incredibly low and the river becomes too shallow for our dinghy. We eventually run aground and have a quick swim before retreating downstream. Nothing ventured nothing gained but we end up having a great time. Then things take a sudden turn. Needing fresh fruit and vegetables we venture into the closest village of Nargana, where our friend Julian we met in the river says he owns a fruit and vegetable stand. Upon approaching the dock we are waved away and told to dock on the other side of the bridge on another island. We go ashore to find an eerily abandoned feeling village blasting music with not a soul to be seen. Wandering around looking for someone to talk to we are approached by a man that says the entire village is closed off to everyone. He gives no explanation other than that. He tells us to leave immediately, instead we end up convincing him to go shopping on our behalf. It was one of our strangest encounters out here, in a place where we have been normally met with nothing but friendly people. You can't win them all I suppose. Not liking the vibe we return to Delos with our meager supply of carrots and onions and set sail, not really knowing where we are going. Just knowing that we didn't want to stay. On her 44th day of sailing, and her third day of racing in the Prada Cup, PATRIOT sustained major mid-race damage to the port side of the hull and was in real danger of slipping beneath the waves. Moments earlier, the sleek, blue-hulled AC75 was winning her race against Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli with room and style to spare. Featuring a full displacement steel hull & composite superstructure she has a 4,000 nautical mile range and a number of notable features typically found on a much larger yacht such as a designated beach club area, boat deck with room to carry up to a 8.5m tender + 3 jet skis, upper sundeck with jacuzzi and prominent plumb bow. She features a stunning custom interior decor by well respected Milan based Italian design firm Hot Lab. 6 cabins sleep 14 guests with a notable private owners deck on the upper level with large walk in wardrobe & spacious en-suite. Forward on the main deck is the full beam VIP that would normally be the master. This is one of my favorite spaces onboard due to the large windows that are notable in her hull design & profile lines. The lower deck has 4 extremely large guest cabins two of which have pullman berths. All with ensuites. With a volume of 330GRT and only 105ft she shows much larger than her LOA. Headroom is 7ft throughout each deck. Truly a show stopper with her custom Awlgrip turquoise hull paint job. When we returned to Curiosity (our Catamaran) to upload the image it sparked an idea. We get questions too often about internet and connectivity on a sailboat: "How do you upload videos and photos from the middle of the ocean?" and "I thought that deserted island didn't have cell phone towers?" or "What's the best cell phone plan for international travel?" and our all-time favorite "Why don't you just buy better / faster satellite internet for your sailboat?" We say weather dictates our travels but if we’re totally honest, connectivity likely holds equal weight. As sailors there is a big difference between connectivity while coastal cruising vs offshore sailing. We do both, so this is an overview of all the ways we stay connected while near land and offshore. Plus, sometimes we’re somewhere so remote that our offshore setup is our best onshore option. We've been traveling full-time for 8 years and many of these recommendations stem from those years of travel experience. These aren't exclusive tips and tricks for sailors, these gadgets are good for most travelers...especially those looking to get off the grid. 113 meter long Super Yacht "Ganimede" When Antonio Romano from the talented young design studio HOT LAB visited our offices in Monaco it didn't take long for me to recognise one of his projects as being ideal material for a Vlog. Ganimede is a 113 meter long super yacht that is far more than just a set of attractive drawings, Fully engineered and designed, this vessel is conceived to be built at Italy's Fincantiere shipyard. A yacht builder with outstanding pedigree in the construction of some of the world's largest yachts. This has been the longest 469 mile sail of my life! (slight exaggeration) But it very well may be our slowest. 🐌 With minimal wind, our current prop pitch and sick engines, most days we only averaged 4 to 5kts. But, that is why we are here! We carefully manage our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so. TALKING TO STRANGERS People are busy (even on remote islands) and travelers are a dime a dozen. It takes time to talk to strangers, and even more time to have a real connection. Going the extra mile to get to know someone is a commitment. Which is why these are our most treasured experiences. Setting off into the world with curiosity as our guide and nature as our compass. We talk to strangers and accept hospitality without fear or reservations. Both giving and receiving.
