Susan was a shipwright, calker and rigger on the building of the Lady Maryland and the Pride of Baltimore II, and the Kalmar Nyckel, as well as the restoration of the Gazela Primeiro and the USS Constitution. In 2018 they began working for the schooner Adventuress in their office here in Port Townsend, and in 2021 they were the recipient of Tall Ships America’s - Lifetime Achievement award. Susan is now enjoying retirement in Port Townsend with her soulmate of 43 years Cindy. Mit unserer Topaz Magno geht’s noch einmal raus in die Kieler Bucht – direkt vor dem Olympiahafen Kiel-Schilksee. Bei 4 Beaufort und ablandigem Wind erleben wir ein richtig agiles kleines Sportboot. Die Magno ist mit nur ca. 3,94 m Länge, 1,56 m Breite und rund 95 kg Rumpfgewicht ein echtes Leichtgewicht. Das Großsegel ca. 8 m², die Fock rund 2 m² und der Gennaker ca. 10–11 m² machen die Jolle perfekt, um das Gennaker-Segeln zu üben – aber eben auch ziemlich kippelig. Das spüren wir sofort: die ersten Kenterungen lassen nicht lange auf sich warten. Insgesamt werden es 6 Kenterungen – jedes Mal schnell aufrichten, Wasser rausfahren und weiter geht’s. Genau das macht den Reiz aus: wenig Trägheit, direktes Lenkverhalten und jede kleine Gewichtsverlagerung spürt man sofort. Wenn die Magno ins Gleiten kommt, spielt die klassische Rumpfgeschwindigkeit von ca. 9 km/h keine Rolle mehr – mit Gennaker und genug Wind kommen wir zeitweise auf 16 km/h und mehr. Für Einsteiger ist die Magno aufgrund ihrer Stabilität beim Aufrichten perfekt zum Lernen geeignet – aber man muss aktiv segeln und Gewicht trimmen! Wir segeln Höhe, üben Wenden, fahren lange Schläge und probieren Manöver im Trapez. Dabei wechseln wir Rollen: mal steuert einer nur mit der Pinne, mal bedienen wir Großsegel und Fock gemeinsam. In this stage of the build, a major milestone is reached as all the temporary structural supports and moulds are released. With the main beams now in place and local stiffening completed where needed, the wet deck and hulls have been bonded together as a strong, solid platform. It’s the first moment where she really starts to look like a boat as you move around her. Looking down from above, the interior layout is beginning to reveal itself too. At this point it can feel a little untidy, an unavoidable and familiar phase in the build process, but the structure is doing exactly what it should, the form is emerging, and everything released just as it should. The yard is packed this December, and while we’re well protected from the recent run of strong gales, the relentless West Country rain has taken its toll. With flooding across the region, the ground is decidedly soggy, as you’ll see in the background. Still, progress continues, and we’re very much looking ahead to the next phases, when everything starts to come together for real.
