오늘은 라이프래프트, 구명땟목 설치를 두고 많은 고민을 했다. 부디 쓸 일이 없기를 바라는 장비지만, 바다 위에서는 반드시 준비되어 있어야 하는 존재다. 라이프래프트를 설치할 수 있는 공간이 한정되어 있어 여러 전문가분들과 위치에 대해 이야기를 나눴고, 그 결과 붐 아래, 메인 트래블러 앞쪽이 가장 이상적이라는 판단에 이르렀다. 다만 그 위치에 설치하려면 선체에 구멍을 뚫는 작업이 불가피했다. 쉽게 결정할 수 없는 일이었기에, 어떻게 하면 가장 안전하고 제대로 설치할 수 있을지 여러 자문을 구하며 공부하고 연구했다. 영상에는 담기지 않았지만 참고로, 라이프래프트를 데크 위에 설치할 경우 해치와 충분한 여유를 두고, 선체에 뚫는 구멍은 가능한 한 최소화하는 것이 좋다고 한다. 나머지는 데크 아이(고리)에 밴드를 사용해 보강-고정하는 방식이 좋다고 한다. 이 내용은 내가 아는 일본의 요트 수리 전문 기술자에게 라인으로 문의하며 받은 답변이다. 그리고 흥미로운 사실도 알게 되었다. 국내에도 라이프래프트를 판매하는 제조업체는 있지만 설치까지 맡아주는 곳은 없었고, 별도로 설치를 해줄 수 있는 업체를 찾는 것도 쉽지 않았다. 대부분은 구매자가 직접 설치하는 경우가 많다고 한다. 배에 구멍을 뚫는 작업은 되돌릴 수 없는 선택이라 매우 신중할 수밖에 없었다. 정말 뚫고 싶지 않았지만, 필요한 자재를 하나둘 준비하며 결국 설치하는 날을 맞이했다. 구명땟목은 국내에서 새 제품으로 구입해 직접 픽업해 왔고, 구명땟목의 수용 인원에 따라 배의 탑승 인원도 결정된다. 이번 작업은 단순한 장비 설치를 넘어, 여러모로 깊이 고민하고 선택해야 했던 시간이었다.

In today’s video, I replace the engine battery on the boat and walk you through the full process step by step. What should be a simple job on land is never quite that simple on a boat. From disconnecting the old battery to securing the new one properly so it won’t move in rough conditions, everything requires extra care. A loose battery at sea is not an option. After installation, we check the charging voltage to make sure everything is working correctly — and we’re getting a healthy 14.27V, so the alternator is doing its job. Along the way, I also talk about another postponed project: replacing the marine waterproof carpets. After checking prices, I decided that for now it’s better to clean and maintain what I have and prioritize more important mechanical investments. There’s plenty of winter work ahead: Full engine maintenance Possible exhaust hose replacement Cleaning the exhaust elbow Replacing the anchor chain due to corrosion Boat life means constant maintenance, but every small job done properly brings peace of mind. We did a quick dingy trip across the harbour yesterday for an impressive dive. The dingy was brilliant with about double the floor space of a RIB, it made having gear aboard a breeze. We also found it much easier to get in an out of than a RIB. The Airbuddy was also fantastic. So good for this type of diving. Easy and light with more than enough dive time. Now I just need to plug it in to charge the battery up again. Love it.
