In 1972 John Lucas set out from Geelong, Victoria to sail a 40-foot house boat, with a makeshift mast, 3,000 nautical miles north up the east coast of Australia to Thursday Island, New Guinea for missionaries desperately in need of vessel to transit rivers to their local villages. This 3-month journey led by skipper John Lucas and 3 novice crew led to the adventure of a lifetime. They faced storms, mutiny, sand bars, media scrutiny, and needed the approval from 26 different government departments across 3 different states, just to start their journey. John recounts his story from 44 years ago with such clarity that you would think he had just completed it yesterday. Described as Australia's Kon-tiki, the media coverage in 1972 fascinated a nation. Al fresco dining options are available on the main aft deck as well as the bridge deck aft, while the expansive sundeck as well as the foredeck offer plenty of relaxation and lounging facilities. The main salon is separated from the formal dining by a four post entertainment center that holds a 37” flat screen TV on a rotational mount. The salon seating features a sofa facing aft and forward with additional complimented chairs and coffee table. The formal dining consists of a custom round dining table with lady susan that comfortable seats 10. The main deck is where the Master suite is situated with office/lounge entry, plenty of drawer and hanging storage for guests featuring a King size bed. A separate his and her bath is highlighted with Persian-gold marble vanity tops, floors and bulkheads including large Jacuzzi tub/shower/steam on her side and frameless shower on his. The four guest staterooms are below deck with a large foyer accentuated by blue granite topped cabinetry. The two VIP staterooms feature King size beds and are en suite with Jacuzzi tub/shower bathrooms. Additionally there is a Queen and Twin guest stateroom each with the same en suite style Jacuzzi tub/shower combination. All staterooms are equipped with their own satellite tv receivers, entertainment systems with TV. Aft on the main deck is a mahogany inlaid hi/lo, in/out table that seats 10. Guests may easily access the bridge deck, foredeck, swim platform and sundeck with easy walkarounds and exterior stairs. A great place to entertain is the skylounge (or bridge deck). Inside is a full bar with black granite top, 5 large full seat stools and a semi circular sofa facing forward to a large screen TV. Aft to starboard is a card table and electronic player piano. There is also a dayhead on this level. Through the double sliding doors is the outside covered teak deck which features a 32’ flat screen TV, teak dining table for 10 and a 6 person Jacuzzi with easy step with handrail access. Up one more level is the sun deck where there is a helm plus 3 captains chairs forward, built in side seating, an oversized sun pad with plenty of back cushions centrally positioned and a bbq grill. Hello friends, this has been our last week of the classic route in the central atolls. We begin our expedition to the Southern Hemisphere. Without a doubt it has been a great finishing touch, both for the great group that has accompanied us and for the good weather and the dives. This week we have been able to make numerous dives in the famous kandus or channels where we have seen large groups of sharks, eagle rays and other pelagic. After our trip to Ari Atoll, we have dived in the legendary thilas that have given this route fame. Huge schools of fishes of various species crown the cleaning stations while the stingrays dance for us. Maldives always reserves surprises for us and in this case he has given us 2 dives the wrecks of Machchafushi and Fesdu that we will take time to forget.
