Judith is Danish & Haakon is Norwegian and they live in Denmark. They both started sailing as adults. They met on a delivery sail from La Rochelle to Oslo, Norway and bought their first boat together 3 months later. They have owned 3 boats: 9 years in Denmark on an Hallberg Rassy 26’, 7 years in the Med on a Malö 40 (31.5’) and 10 years on Touché, an Island Packet 380. They have Sailed approximately 22000 nM in Touche but always part time: 3 years in Scotland, 3 years in Norway, 1 season in Scotland & Ireland, 1 year in Atlantic France, then south to Gran Canaria, Crossing the Atlantic in 2018/2019 – The Eastern Caribbean, USA, Cuba, Grand Cayman and Panama. Touché is now in Panama waiting for new adventures. Future plans (if Covid allows – they had planned to be in Chile around now): Through the Panama Canal, Galapagos, Easter Island, Puerto Montt, Chile and Patagonia. They don’t intend to sail around the world – unless you count as much as we can do ‘vertically’! Finished framing everything the way i want it! Gotta start working on doors and preping for paint in the forward berth and head. Not sure how I am going to make the door for the bathroom yet. Thinking about making curved folding door. So far other than epoxy and hardner the rebuild has only cost my time.😀

It's been a long time since I published a podcast and I finally I found after many, many attempts that the only way to get back on the horse was to just record whatever came out of my mouth for an hour and we can pick the bones out of it later. In this episode I talk about what has been happening for me in 2023, I talk about the Global Solo Challenge Race coming up in December and answer a great question that was sent to me earlier this year about being the skipper of a vessel at a young age. Regular programming will commence forthwith. If you have any ideas about my mixing elbow for a Yanmar 3JH2-TE engine or anything else that might help get Falcon to the start of the Global Solo Challenge, please email me at csmthemariner@gmail.com (mailto:csmthemariner@gmail.com) If you want to access more content and show support for this podcast please join me at www.patreon.com/themariner (http://www.patreon.com/themariner)   If you want to hear me reading sailing stories that I have chosen as being beneficial to developing seamanship skills, please look for The Mariner's Library wherever you get your podcasts.

Halfway between New Zealand & Cape Horn I suffer critical damage to my mainsail between reefs 2 & 3, a 6 ft (2m) tear has opened up in the leech of my mainsail and unless it is fixed I cannot fly the sail and I will not only be last in the race but also in a very dangerous position 1000's of Miles form shore. Suddenly all thought of competition is forgotten and I am in survival mode as I struggle to deal emotionally and physically with a major repair on deck at 'Point Nemo' the most remote point on the planet in freezing conditions and heavy seas. If you have any questions you would like answering please send them to csmthemariner@gmail.com  (mailto:csmthemariner@gmail.com) If you recognize that creating this content requires hours of effort and you would like to help support for the equivalent of 25cents per episode please visit my Patreon Site (https://www.patreon.com/themariner) and select the $2 per month option. If you are looking to develop your seamanship skills and take your sailing knowledge & safety to a more advanced level I run an On-Line Seamanship Training Program (https://https//:www.patreon.com/themariner) which gives you access to four 30 minute videos each month that deep-dive into a broad range of subjects from Ropework to Naval Architecture, Electronic Navigation, Sail Trim, Composite Repair. The lessons come out once a week and the minimum commitment to have access to all of them is $20 per month. I you want to get out on the water on a race, regatta or training voyage you can book any number of trips in the Caribbean, American North East, Europe and even Transatlantic trips; year round with Spartan Ocean Racing & Training (https://www.spartanoceanracing.com) Thanks! I had never heard of this book before finding it here in the Mariner's Library but 'The Cruises of the Joan' seems to have attached a lot of very positive comments from contemporary literary critics & sailors alike when it was released. W.E.Sinclair has what commentators at the time refer to as  'a humble style in his approach to recording his voyages'. However, as his mileage increases with journeys throughout Scotland and round the British Isles, it becomes increasingly apparent that his delicately chosen prose is actually perfectly suited to allow even a reader 100 years hence to enter the story, share in the adventure and vicariously live through what promises to be some otherwise unbelievable adventures off the coasts of Iceland, Greenland and Newfoundland later on in the book. If you recognize the value in this free content, please consider going over to https://www.patreon.com/themariner to support this channel with a $5 monthly contribution. This book is the chronicle of W.A. Robinson setting off on his 32 footer 'Svaap' from Panama, then taking two years to circumnavigate the world, during the interwar years.  It is a wonderfully written and diligent account, by a sailor who, although initially advertising himself as 'not a writer', goes on to produce the most wonderfully vivid and heartfelt story, that even now, a hundred years later, still stirs the soul to adventures beyond the West horizon. 40,000Nm,  a circumnavigation of the world, completed double-handed, in a decked in, dug-out, red cedar canoe. The bare facts on the page already seem impossible. There is only one sailor who holds a candle to Capt. Slocum, and that is Capt. Voss. If you don't know who that is, don't worry, I didn't know either until I read this book. Now, I can't stop stop wondering how on earth he did what he did, and realizing once again, that modern sailing truly stands on the shoulders of giants. I invite you to learn with me, the incredible story of one of the almost forgotten fathers of offshore sailing. When I think of Adlard Coles, I think of the famous Nautical Publishing House, but the fact is that the person behind that same institution was first off a small craft sailor just like you and I. This, his first book, is the tale of his first ever, long-distance cruise. What a career lay ahead of him! Despite not really knowing exactly what they were doing, Coles and his crew ventured across the storm-tossed North Sea and into the sand bar nightmare of the Zuider Zee & Frisian Islands. Unperturbed, they then crossed into the Baltic Sea, finally fetching themselves up in Copenhagen. Whist the voyage alone, in a 20ft yacht is noteworthy enough, Coles' narrative gives a unique glimpse also into the bubbling cauldron of unrest, that was sweeping Europe at this time, exactly 101 years ago. 12:00 Belfast Taste & Tour
