I’m sailing from Almere toward Lemmer in The Netherlands – the town where my love for sailing started when I was just ten years old. Now I’m back with my 27ft Grinde Loveworkx, ready for the next big chapter: my solo circumnavigation. I moor at Zeilmakerij De Vries Maritiem, the same place where I once worked at the reception desk. Today they’re making a brand new sprayhood, a rain-catching cover for the tropics, a dinghy cover, and even a cockpit hammock for better watch-keeping. It feels incredibly special to return to the place where it all began while preparing my boat for the big oceans ahead. It is the adventure, said Sonna, but also a certain kind of freedom. To undertake the crewed around-the-world record is as much about the human adventure as it is a technical and sporting challenge. The men and women working alongside Dona Bertarelli and Yann Guichard at Spindrift racing have been preparing this race against the clock for almost three years. The target: to sail around the world in less than 45 days, 13 hours and 42 minutes. The tough record they will try to beat was set by Loïck Peyron and his crew in 2012 on Banque Populaire V, which was renamed Spindrift 2 a year later. The French-Swiss team decided to use the same 40 m trimaran because they believed that the boat could be further optimised, a task that sailors, engineers and technicians at the team have been working on ever since. Interested in cutting down your waste? In the past people have commented on my vlogs that they reuse plastic bags stores provide them with for produce and bulk bins. So, I finally tried that over the summer and it worked great. The only bummer was those darn PLU stickers for the bulk bags... Either way, I thought I'd let you know that reusing plastic bags, coffee bags, and produce bags in bulk sections does take some extra work and you do feel a little silly taking out used plastic from your purse in the store- but it works. For the everyday, conscious American family why not do what you can with what you've got rather than surrendering to the system. Eating more fruits and vegetables, making more food from scratch, cutting out animal products, taking reusables with you when you leave your home, and picking up garbage when you are out-- those are things we can all do regardless of where we live, our financial situation, our schedules, etc. I try not to beat myself up about not getting it right all of the time, but striving to do my best in every opportunity I'm given.
